[Vacuolar myelopathy after allogeneic bone marrow transplantation in a patient with acute lymphoblastic leukemia].

Vacuolar myelopathy (VM) is known to be a neurological complication in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). In autopsy-based studies, VM was reported in approximately 20-50% of patients with AIDS. It manifests in various says, mainly presenting as a painless spastic paraparesis with a sensory ataxia. We present a rare case of VM after bone marrow transplantation (BMT) in a patient without AIDS. A 50-year-old man developed weakness in the lower legs, leg muscle atrophy, and difficulty in walking 86 days after BMT. The patient died from septic shock on day 309. The autopsy re

Attitudes to hearing difficulty and hearing aids and the outcome of audiological rehabilitation.

First time hearing aid candidates (N = 135) in a NHS setting were administered the Hearing Attitudes in Rehabilitation Questionnaire (HARQ) designed to assess attitudes to acquired hearing loss and hearing aids and 92% of them were followed up 3-9 months after fitting. Attitude scores, age, sex and sensory thresholds were related to six self-report outcome measures by use of logistic regression. The major findings were that patients who were least distressed by their hearing difficulties and reported not wanting or needing a hearing aid used their aids least frequently and evaluated them less

Remediation of intonation contours of hearing-impaired students.

Incorrect production of intonation contours is a common phonatory problem among the hearing impaired. Programs designed to remediate this problem include those that employ a systematic sequence of training steps as well as those that use sensory aids to provide visual or tactile feedback of contour production. A speech-training program that incorporates both is described. The program utilizes a hierarchical curriculum with either a tactile or a visual display of fundamental frequency for the remediation of incorrectly produced intonation contours. The displays are interfaced with a microproces

The disuse of hearing aids in elderly people diagnosed with a presbycusis at an old age home, in Johannesburg, South Africa: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Hearing loss is the most common form of human sensory deficit with its prevalence highest within the geriatric population. Approximately a third of adults aged from 61 years exhibit the characteristics of presbycusis, a number one contributor to communication disorders among the elderly, thereby affecting the social, functional and psychological wellbeing of the elderly. Subsiquently, this leads to loneliness, isolation, dependence and frustration. OBJECTIVE: To explore reasons why elderly people diagnosed with presbycusis and fitted with hearing aids stop using hearing aids post

Use of hearing aids by older people: influence of non-auditory factors (vision, manual dexterity).

Acquired hearing loss is prevalent among older people. As people age, they also may develop impairments in other sensory systems, such as vision and touch. The purpose of this paper is to examine the communicative effects of a combined sensory loss and discuss how non-auditory aspects of aging can affect a person's ability: (1) to manage daily communication with an acquired hearing loss; and (2) to manipulate and maintain hearing aids that may be prescribed.

Timing and trials of hearing aids and assistive devices.

Of all the factors under consideration during the evaluation for a cochlear implant, perhaps the most critical is the speech perception ability of the candidate when using appropriate amplification. For children, this issue is often complicated by inadequate training or limited use of the sensory aid. Guidelines for implantation suggest that there be a "lack of benefit from hearing aids" to qualify as a candidate. This "lack of benefit" must be explored when using the most appropriate aid coupled with the proper rehabilitation. In determining candidacy for children, it becomes extremely import

An experimental study on target recognition using white canes.

To understand basic tactile perception using white canes, we compared tapping (two times) and pushing (two times) methods using the index finger and using a white cane, with and without accompanying auditory information. Participants were six visually impaired individuals who used a white cane to walk independently in their daily lives. For each of the tapping and pushing and sound or no sound conditions, participants gave magnitude estimates for the hardness of rubber panels. Results indicated that using a white cane produces sensitivity levels equal to using a finger when accompanied by audi

Use of a hearing assistance device in nursing homes.

An inexpensive hearing assistance device can improve communication with nursing home residents. In patients who do not have prescribed hearing aids or who are being audiologically evaluated, voice amplification with such a device facilitates initial assessment as well as ongoing care. Such devices are available at local consumer outlets for under $30, making them available to persons who are unable to afford more sophisticated models.

Aphasic dyslexia of Braille in a congenitally blind man.

Due to an ischemic attack a congenitally blind man became aphasic. He had a severe Wernicke's aphasia and aphasic dyslexia of Braille. The patient had been a very expert Braille reader before his illness. Two texts of 250 words each were read and the results analysed. One text was in basic Braille and the other in contracted Braille. Results of the analysis are discussed with regard to processes in reading Braille and problems of dyslexia.

A Systematic Review of Urban Navigation Systems for Visually Impaired People.

Blind and Visually impaired people (BVIP) face a range of practical difficulties when undertaking outdoor journeys as pedestrians. Over the past decade, a variety of assistive devices have been researched and developed to help BVIP navigate more safely and independently. In addition, research in overlapping domains are addressing the problem of automatic environment interpretation using computer vision and machine learning, particularly deep learning, approaches. Our aim in this article is to present a comprehensive review of research directly in, or relevant to, assistive outdoor navigation f

Matuto, Magbasa, Maglaro: Learning to read braille through play.

In September 2016, Digital Learning for Development and All Children Reading released a "Grand Challenge for Development" urging researchers to explore the barriers that children with sensory disabilities in the Philippines face with respect to learning how to read. We sought to address one component of this challenge; engagement of persons with visual impairment in learning how to read in braille. The primary goal of this study was to engage in the co-design process to create a device to help young children with visual impairments learn to identify letters and short words in braille as a firs

Shift of musical hallucinations to visual hallucinations after correction of the hearing deficit in a patient with Lewy body dementia: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Musical hallucinations are a particular type of auditory hallucination in which the patient perceives instrumental music, musical sounds, or songs. Musical hallucinations are associated with acquired hearing loss, particularly within the elderly. Under conditions of reduced auditory sensory input, perception-bearing circuits are disinhibited and perceptual traces released, implying an interaction between peripheral sensory deficits and central factors related to brain dysfunction. CASE PRESENTATION: A 71-year-old Caucasian man with hearing loss complained of memory difficulties an

[Neuronal apoptosis in the central and peripheral nervous system in HIV infection].

Apart from the unique changes characteristic of "HIV encephalitis", the productive infection of central nervous system by HIV, which predominantly involves the white matter and basal ganglia, evidence is accumulating that the cerebral cortex may also be affected in AIDS patients. Neuronal loss, suspected at microscopic examination, has been demonstrated by a number of morphometric studies. However, the cause and mechanism of neuronal damage in HIV infection, are still unclear. In an attempt to look for an apoptotic process at the origin of neuronal loss in AIDS, we examined samples of frontal

Intelligent Head-Mounted Obstacle Avoidance Wearable for the Blind and Visually Impaired.

Individuals who are Blind and Visually Impaired (BVI) take significant risks and dangers on obstacles, particularly when they are unaccompanied. We propose an intelligent head-mount device to assist BVI people with this challenge. The objective of this study is to develop a computationally efficient mechanism that can effectively detect obstacles in real time and provide warnings. The learned model aims to be both reliable and compact so that it can be integrated into a wearable device with a small size. Additionally, it should be capable of handling natural head turns, which can generally imp

Evaluation of a gaze-controlled vision enhancement system for reading in visually impaired people.

People with low vision, especially those with Central Field Loss (CFL), need magnification to read. The flexibility of Electronic Vision Enhancement Systems (EVES) offers several ways of magnifying text. Due to the restricted field of view of EVES, the need for magnification is conflicting with the need to navigate through text (panning). We have developed and implemented a real-time gaze-controlled system whose goal is to optimize the possibility of magnifying a portion of text while maintaining global viewing of the other portions of the text (condition 1). Two other conditions were implemen
