Plasma fructose explains sex differences in multiple cardiovascular risk factors.

AIMS: To investigate sex differences in cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk and to identify if plasma fructose associates with isolated cardiovascular risk factors and estimated CVD risk. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study which included 597 adults aged 20-79 years, using baseline data collected between 2014 and 2018. Demographic and clinical data were assessed, while food consumption was investigated by a food frequency questionnaire. Fasting plasma fructose, glucose, lipid biomarkers and hepatic inflammatory enzymes were analyzed, as well as hepatic steatosis by ultrasound. The overall

Sex and Reproductive History as Nontraditional Risk Factors for PAD.

Sex and reproductive history are established nontraditional risk factors for cardiovascular disease, but their relevance for peripheral artery disease (PAD) remains unclear. This narrative review examines the current evidence surrounding underlying mechanisms and associations between female sex, reproductive factors, and the development of atherosclerosis, focusing on PAD specifically. Overall, there is a paucity of evidence regarding the association between sex-specific risk factors and PAD. However, hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, gestational diabetes, and adverse pregnancy outcomes are

Factors Affecting the Public Acceptance of Extramarital Sex in China.

There is a lack of quantitative studies on the acceptance of extramarital sex in China. Based on data from the Chinese General Social Survey 2013 (CGSS2013), this paper used a zero-inflated Poisson regression model to analyze the factors influencing the public's attitudes toward extramarital sex. When other variables were controlled, groups of younger ages, higher educational levels, and stronger tendencies toward "liberalization" and non-Islamic beliefs were more tolerant toward extramarital sex, whereas gender and Christian beliefs had no significant influence. In this regard, family and mar

Sex-specific factors for bone density in patients with schizophrenia.

Patients with schizophrenia are susceptible to low bone mineral density (BMD). Many risk factors have been suggested. However, it remains uncertain whether the risk factors differ between men and women. In addition, the study of bone density in men is neglected more often than that in women. This study aims to examine specific risk factors of low BMD in different sexes. Men (n=80) and women (n=115) with schizophrenia, similar in demographic and clinical characteristics, were enrolled in three centers. Clinical and laboratory variables (including blood levels of prolactin, sex and thyroid hormo

Coercive sex in rural Uganda: prevalence and associated risk factors.

Despite growing recognition of the problem, relatively little is known about the issue of coercive sex in developing countries. This study presents findings from a community-based survey of 4279 reproductive-aged women in current partnerships in the Rakai District of Uganda carried out in 1998-99. One in four women in our study report having experienced coercive sex with their current male partner, with most women reporting its occasional occurrence. In a regression analysis of risk factors for coercive sex, conventional socio-demographic characteristics emerged as largely unpredictive of the

Adverse factors associated with forced sex among southern adolescent girls.

OBJECTIVE: To identify adverse behavioral and psychological factors associated with forced sex experiences of adolescent girls compared with their sexually active counterparts. METHOD: An anonymous self-report survey examining an array of psychosocial items, to which 3124 grade 8 and grade 10 female students responded. RESULTS: Sexually abused girls were more likely to have been pregnant, to have initiated sexual intercourse at a younger age, to indicate illegal drug use, to have feelings of depression, to express more frequent suicidal ideation, and to have been physically abused. CONCLUSI

Regulation of sex hormone-binding globulin production by growth factors.

Sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) is a glycoprotein whose production has been demonstrated to be regulated by both sex steroids, as well as by thyroid hormone and peptide hormones such as insulin. However, none of these regulatory factors would explain the marked decrease in serum SHBG seen throughout the prepubertal and pubertal time period in both boys and girls. Furthermore, current in vitro data show that both androgens and estrogens can stimulate SHBG production by the human hepatoblastoma cell line Hep G2; yet, in vivo androgens appear to suppress SHBG levels, while estrogens are assoc

Gender, Sex and Other Factors in the Development of Neuroendocrine Neoplasms.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To examine how biological sex and gender influence the tumorigenesis of neuroendocrine neoplasms (NEN), integrating epidemiological evidence with hormonal, molecular, lifestyle and environmental factors. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent population-based studies demonstrate sex differences in NEN incidence, pathological characteristics and survival across multiple anatomical sites. Emerging evidence suggests that sex-hormone signalling, epigenetic regulation and the tumour microenvironment may contribute to these differences. Lifestyle and metabolic factors, including smoking and obe

Sex as a risk factor regarding presbyopia in the rhesus monkey.

PURPOSE: To determine the effect of sex as a risk factor regarding presbyopia. METHODS: Maximum accommodation was pharmacologically induced (40% cabachol corneal iontophoresis) in 97 rhesus monkeys (49 males and 48 females) ranging in age from 8 to 36 years old. Accommodation was measured by Hartinger coincidence refractometry. RESULTS: Accommodative amplitude measured refractometrically decreased with age, and the rate of change was not different between males and females (p = 0.827). CONCLUSIONS: Presbyopia is essentially sex neutral, and no one is spared. There may be modest variations b

Sex and stroke risk factors: A review of differences and impact.

OBJECTIVES: There is an increase in stroke incidence risk over the lifetime of women, given their longer life expectancy. However, an alarming trend for sex disparities, particularly in certain stroke risk factors, shows a concerning need for focus on sex differences in stroke prevention and treatment for women. In this article, we are addressing sex differences in both traditional and sex-specific stroke risk factors. METHODS: We searched PubMed from inception to December 2022 for articles related to sex differences and risk factors for stroke. We reviewed full-text articles for relevance an

Orbital shape in sheep and goats with sex and breed factors.

The purpose of this study was to identify the dimorphic structures of the orbita based on breed and sex factors through shape analysis across species. Additionally, the study aimed to ascertain the variability between the two species. A total of 86 (51 sheep-Akkaraman [Ak] and Morkaraman [Mk], 35 goats-Hair [Hr] and Honamlı [Hm]) skulls were used in the study. It was decided to designate 36 landmarks to represent the orbit's edge. In the principal component analysis, 68 PCs were calculated. It was determined that PC1, PC2 and PC3 explained the total variance in morphology by 26.909%, 16.147% a

Evidence for Menopause as a Sex-Specific Risk Factor for Glaucoma.

Glaucoma is a leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide and is characterized by progressive loss of visual function and retinal ganglion cells (RGC). Current epidemiological, clinical, and basic science evidence suggest that estrogen plays a role in the aging of the optic nerve. Menopause, a major biological life event affecting all women, coincides with a decrease in circulating sex hormones, such as estrogen. While 59% of the glaucomatous population are females, sex is not considered a risk factor for developing glaucoma. In this review, we explore whether menopause is a sex-specific

Sex and the patient with cardiovascular risk factors: focus on sildenafil.

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is common in men with cardiovascular disease. The introduction of sildenafil citrate, the first oral agent for the treatment of this disorder, has increased awareness about the risks of sexual activity in cardiac patients and raised concerns about the safety of sildenafil in patients being treated for coronary disease. Sildenafil is a potent and selective inhibitor of phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5), the enzyme responsible for the degradation of cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP). Sildenafil acts along the same general pathway as nitric oxide donors to increase cGM

Loneliness as a sex-specific risk factor for cognitive aging.

Loneliness has emerged as a robust risk factor for adverse cognitive outcomes, including accelerated cognitive decline and increased dementia risk. However, accumulating evidence suggests that the cognitive consequences of loneliness may be sex-specific, with women experiencing disproportionate exposure, vulnerability, and downstream effects across the life course. This mini-review synthesizes epidemiological, psychosocial, and neurobiological evidence linking loneliness to cognitive aging in women, highlighting sex differences in prevalence, social role exposures (e.g., caregiving, widowhood)

Sex-specific risk factor profile in oesophageal adenocarcinoma.

A nationwide Swedish case-control study of 388 men and 63 women with adenocarcinoma of the oesophagus and gastro-oesophageal function and 676 men controls and 140 women investigated whether sex differences in aetiology contribute to male predominance. Compared with men, women seemed more vulnerable to reflux (odds ratio (OR)=4.6, 95% confidence interval (CI)=2.0-10.5 vs OR=3.4, 95% CI=2.5-4.6), obesity (OR=10.3, 95% CI=2.6-42.3 vs OR=5.4, 95% CI=2.6-10.8) and smoking (OR=5.3, 95% CI=2.0-14.1 vs OR=2.8, 95% CI=1.9-4.2), less harmed by low intake of fruit and vegetables (OR=0.9, 95% CI 0.3-2.4 v

Sex differences in factors associated with cannabis use among emerging adults.

Cannabis use is prevalent among young adults and is influenced by a range of psychological, behavioral, and environmental factors. Although some individuals report using cannabis to manage stress or trauma-related symptoms, the relative contribution of early adversity and concurrent psychosocial factors to cannabis use-and whether these associations differ by sex-remains unclear. This study examined the extent to which adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), depressive and anxiety symptoms, alcohol use, and dissociative experiences are associated with cannabis use in men and women. A total of 1,

Race, sex, and risk factors in radiographic worsening of knee osteoarthritis.

OBJECTIVES: Characterize radiographic worsening in knee osteoarthritis (KOA) by race and sex over 4 years and evaluate the role of established risk factors in observed race/sex differences. METHODS: Whites (WHs) (694 males and 929 females) and African-Americans (AAs) (92 males and 167 females) at risk for radiographic KOA were eligible. Cox shared frailty models were used to estimate race and sex group differences in radiographic worsening, defined by Kellgren-Lawrence (K-L) and OARSI joint space narrowing (JSN). Mixed effect models for repeated measures were used to estimate race- and sex-sp
