In a sheep which was euthanased because of severe emaciation and weakness, slight thickening of the ileum was seen grossly. Microscopically there was a granulomatous ileitis with obliterative lymphangitis and lymphangiectasis. Granulomatous lesions were also present in the liver and some mesenteric lymph nodes. Large numbers of acid-fast bacilli were present within epithelioid macrophages in the lamina propria of the ileum. Although the identity of the Mycobacterium spp. involved was not established, the possibility of paratuberculosis is discussed. The apparent rarity of this disease in sheep

Nairobi sheep disease virus (NSDV), a tick-borne pathogen in the Orthonairovirus genus of the Nairoviridae family, causes Nairobi sheep disease (NSD), which has mortality rates over 90% in sheep and goats. Historically, NSD outbreaks in East Africa and South Asia have led to considerable economic losses. Although NSDV genomic fragments have been detected in ticks in China, there has been a notable absence of reported infections in local sheep and goats. In this study, we report the first identification of NSDV infection in sheep and goats in China. Through meta-transcriptomics sequencing, NSDV

Creating valid mouse models of slowly progressing human neurological diseases is challenging, not least because the short lifespan of rodents confounds realistic modelling of disease time course. With their large brains and long lives, sheep offer significant advantages for translational studies of human disease. Here we used normal and CLN5 Batten disease affected sheep to demonstrate the use of the species for studying neurological function in a model of human disease. We show that electroencephalography can be used in sheep, and that longitudinal recordings spanning many months are possible

Infectious reproductive diseases pose a significant economic threat to sheep and goat operations. Maintaining records, a defined breeding season, and recognizing deviations from normal are crucial to herd health programs. Signs of suboptimal fertility, such as repeat breeding, unexpected open females, and abnormal gestational distributions, warrant further investigation. Important causes of infectious abortion discussed include chlamydiosis (enzootic abortion), coxiellosis, campylobacteriosis, toxoplasmosis, and brucellosis. Given the potential zoonotic nature of abortion in small ruminants, p

Nairobi sheep disease virus (NSDV) is a tick-borne virus which causes a severe disease in sheep and goats, and has been responsible for several outbreaks of disease in East Africa. The virus is also found in the Indian subcontinent, where it is known as Ganjam virus. The virus only spreads through the feeding of competent infected ticks, and is therefore limited in its geographic distribution by the distribution of those ticks, Rhipicephalus appendiculata in Africa and Haemaphysalis intermedia in India. Animals bred in endemic areas do not normally develop disease, and the impact is therefore

OBJECTIVE: Scrapie of sheep and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) are both classified as prion diseases. The infectious agents of both diseases are closely related. The objectives of the study was to explore, whether sheep scrapie could be transmitted to humans and cause CJD.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The occurrence of CJD was studied in a period of 40 years, 1960 to 2000. The first part of the study, which was started in 1980, was retrospective. Hospital records from the Department of Neurology of the National Hospital from the years 1960-1980 were scrutinised and paraffin blocks from the collecti

Johne's disease in ruminants results in chronic enteritis caused by the pathogenic bacterium Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis. This study examined two M. avium subsp. paratuberculosis strains (JD3 and W), using different doses and routes of infection, to establish the optimal time postchallenge when predictable levels of infection, gut lesions, and clinical disease occur in a large proportion of sheep. While a small proportion (25%) of sheep challenged with a low-passage-number laboratory culture of M. avium subsp. paratuberculosis (strain W) became infected, no infection was found

Breeding for disease resistance in Merino sheep in Australia has attracted considerable research and development attention. Increased labour costs, the reduced efficacy of common anthelmintics and insecticides, consumer demand for products which are free of chemicals and the poor prognosis of alternative long-term control strategies are all forcing sheep breeders to contemplate the best animal health options available, including selective breeding for resistance. The three major diseases which affect sheep production include gastrointestinal nematode parasites, flystrike (cutaneous myiasis) an

We have shown that it is possible to transmit bovine spongiform encephalitis (BSE) to a sheep by transfusion with whole blood taken from another sheep during the pre-clinical phase of an experimental BSE infection when the donor animal appears healthy. BSE and new variant Creutzfeld-Jakob disease (vCJD) in humans are caused by the same infectious agent and the sheep-BSE experimental model has similar pathogenesis, with involvement of the lymphoreticular system, to that of human vCJD. Although we have had only one case of positive transmission of BSE out of a total of 21 transfusions, our studi

A survey among small ruminant veterinary practitioners and producers of the United States was conducted to determine the most important health problems of sheep and goats and the need for drugs to treat these diseases. Gastrointestinal nematodes and pneumonia were the most important health concerns. Ceftiofur, long acting tetracyclines, penicillins, tilmicosin and enrofloxacin were the antibiotics most needed. The approval of ivermectin and albendazole for goats, and fenbendazole for sheep were among the most common requests for anthelmintics. Veterinarians also stressed the need for drugs to

A review is given on the Babesia, Theileria, and Anaplasma species infecting sheep and goats. B. ovis is the most important disease agent. It is transmitted by Rhipicephalus bursa, R. turanicus, Hyalomma anatolicum excavatum, and probably by R. evertsi evertsi B. ovis is widely spread in southern Europe, the Middle East, and central Asia. Its geographical distribution in South and East Asia and in Africa is widely unknown. B. motasi obviously represents several nosodemes in separate regions. It is not pathogenic for intact sheep in northern Europe, whereas it is probably more pathogenic than B

Data related to rates of disease and their associated costs were collected for 12 months from 2 sheep feedlots in northern Colorado. There was an apparent seasonal occurrence of many of the diseases. Pneumonia, enterotoxemia, acidosis, and transport tetany accounted for most of the diseases seen in these feedlots and were responsible for most of the economic losses. There was a large difference in the incidence of diseases between the 2 feedlots and in the expenditures for disease prevention between the 2 feedlots.

180 patients with neurological or infectious diseases and 90 normal controls were examined for blood T lymphocyte percentage by the standard method using rosette formation with untreated sheep erythrocytes (E) and a technique using 2-amino-ethyl-thio-isouronium bromide hydrobromide (AET)-treated E, with fetal calf serum (FCS) in the medium. Patients with acute meningitis had a decrease and those with infections mononucleosis had an increase in T lymphocyte percentage as measured by both assays. However, patients with active MS and with cerebral tumours had a decrease in T cell percentage by th

Nairobi sheep disease (NSD) is a hemorrhagic vector-borne disease of small ruminants caused by the Nairobi sheep disease virus (NSDV), also known as Ganjam virus (GV). NSDV and GV refer to the same virus. The NSDV has been identified in East Africa, India, Sri Lanka, and China, and NSDV vector ticks can be carried by birds. There is few research on the mechanism of the global cycle and spillover of NSDV. Based on the prediction of the high probability distribution areas of NSD by the maximum entropy model (MaxEnt), the possible passive transport routes of NSDV vector ticks by migratory birds w

Lower airway diseases are a major health concern in sheep, often presenting with overlapping clinical signs that hinder accurate diagnosis. This study evaluated the diagnostic value of computed tomography (CT) in 58 adult sheep examined in northeastern Spain between 2017 and 2024. All animals underwent full clinical examination, CT under general anaesthesia, and post-mortem investigation. CT identified 82 pulmonary lesions, including interstitial pneumonia, respiratory complex, gangrenous pneumonia, caseous lymphadenitis, parasitic pneumonia, pulmonary adenocarcinoma, and pulmonary hydatidosis

Sheep have many advantages over large ruminants for most smallholder farmers: lower feed costs, quicker turnover, easy management, and appropriate size at slaughter can be mentioned. They produce in a wide range of agroecologies, from arid lowlands to extremely cool highlands. However, their productivity is hindered by disease burden and poor management practices. In the study area, information on the disease of sheep and related management practices is lacking. Thus, the study aimed to determine the major sheep diseases and management practices in North Shewa Zone, Oromia, Ethiopia. A cross-s

BACKGROUND: Ticks are blood-sucking ectoparasites and transmit various types of protozoal, bacterial, and viral diseases in a wild as well as domestic animals and humans globally. Only a few published reports are avaliable on the prevalence of tick-borne diseases in sheep and goats in Pakistan.
AIM AND OBJECTIVE: The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to evaluate the prevalence (2000-2020) of tick-borne disease (theileriosis, babesiosis, Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever infection, and anaplasmosis) in sheep and goats in Pakistan.
METHODS: A systematic review of articles publ
