Introduction Since the emergence of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) virus at the beginning of 2020, the world has gone through various waves of pandemics. The health care workers (HCWs) or the COVID warriors as they were termed were the first line of defense against the virus. They were armed with personal protective equipment and prophylactic doses of the COVID-19 vaccine. Despite these precautions, some of the HCWs still contracted the disease and a few others succumbed to it. The objective of this study was to estimate the prevalence of COVID-19 infections and vaccine breakthrough i

BACKGROUND: Trauma recovery among tribal adolescent girls and young women in Northeast India remains poorly understood, particularly for those with dissociative disorders. Existing frameworks rely on Western paradigms that do not account for the cultural, spiritual, and environmental realities of tribal communities.
METHODS: Using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), this study examined the lived healing experiences of three young women from Sikkim who had completed a culturally grounded intervention comprising Pranayama, Ana Pana Sati meditation, and raga-based music therapy in 20

An immediate need exists for a safe, quick, and effective reversal agent in patients who present with anticoagulant-induced major bleed. Dabigatran, a newer oral anticoagulant and a direct thrombin inhibitor (DTI), can also induce bleeding risk. Idarucizumab is a specific dabigatran reversal drug that the United States Food and Drug Administration (US FDA) has approved in the event of a significant bleeding caused by this drug. In this particular drug-related bleeding, it can be challenging to precisely dose alternative reversal agents like prothrombin complex concentrates (PCCs) and activated

A cross-sectional sero-surveillance study was conducted across the five districts of Sikkim to determine the seroprevalence of Brucella and Leptospira antibodies among veterinary and para-veterinary personnel. Serum samples were tested for Brucella using the Rose Bengal Test, Standard Agglutination Test, and ELISA (IgG/IgM), while Leptospira antibodies were detected using ELISA (IgG/IgM). Brucella seroprevalence was 18.8%, and Leptospira seroprevalence was 20.5%. The findings indicate a considerable level of exposure to both infections in this occupational group, underscoring the need for stre

The research paper explores the burden and associated factors of intestinal parasitic infections among pregnant women in Sikkim, India, categorized as neglected tropical diseases affecting 1.5 billion globally, with higher rates in tropical regions. These infections pose significant health risks, causing anemia, poor maternal-perinatal health, and perpetuating generational undernutrition and recurrent infections. A cross-sectional study of 100 pregnant women in Sikkim aimed to determine the burden of intestinal parasitosis and associated sociodemographic factors. It reported a lower prevalence

Extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing bacteria are a global health threat both in hospital and in community settings. The emergence of these organisms poses major difficulty in treating infections. This study was carried out to assess major ESBL-producing uropathogens in female patients of Sikkim and Darjeeling by phenotypic and genotypic methods. Out of 1,516 urine samples, 454 uropathogens were isolated with a prevalence rate of 29.94%. Among them, Escherichia coli (74.3%) was the predominant type followed by Klebsiella pneumoniae (20.1%), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (2.4%), and Proteus

Background & objectives Persistent nasal colonisation of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) among healthcare personnel (HCP) remains a significant challenge. MRSA carriers are crucial to the spread of the infection, with healthcare professionals often acting as vectors for both hospital- and community-acquired MRSA. This study aimed to evaluate the MRSA carriage rate among healthcare professionals from critical care units at a tertiary care hospital in Gangtok, Sikkim. Furthermore, the study undertook to analyse antibiotic susceptibility patterns of isolated MSSA and MRSA strai

Background Bloodstream infections (BSIs) are one of the frequent nosocomial infections among hospitalized patients. To understand the local epidemiology and evolving antimicrobial drug resistance of blood-borne pathogens, we analyzed the distribution and antibiotic sensitivity profile of organisms causing BSI in our hospital-based study. Materials and Methods We reviewed retrospective data of laboratory-confirmed BSIs, from January 2013 to December 2018. Causative organisms and their antibiotic susceptibility profile of primary and secondary BSI reports were determined from BacT/Alert and Vi

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Occurrence of chronic physical pain is increasingly identified among youth, and medically unsupervised analgesic use is a possible risk factor for opioid dependence and other mental diseases in later life. Therefore, the present study was carried out in young student population in Sikkim, India, to explore predictors (including current chronic pain and current analgesic use) of low QoL in youth to identify a subset of population vulnerable to substance use and mental diseases in later life.
METHODS: The study was conducted in a health university setting in Sikkim, Nor

Here we present the construction and characterization of metagenome assembled genomes (MAGs) from two hot springs residing in the vicinity of Indian Himalayan Geothermal Belt (IHGB). A total of 78 and 7 taxonomic bins were obtained for Old Yume Samdong (OYS) and New Yume Samdong (NYS) hot springs respectively. After passing all the criteria only 21 and 4 MAGs were further studied based on the successful prediction of their 16 S rRNA. Various databases were used such as GTDB, Kaiju, EzTaxon, BLAST XY Plot and NCBI BLAST to get the taxonomic classification of various 16 S rRNA predicted MAGs. Th

BACKGROUND: Monasteries in India house individuals from childhood to advanced age. These congregate settings amplify tuberculosis (TB) transmission and exposure when the disease is present, especially in the high burden areas like Sikkim, India. However, the prevalence of active-TB disease (ATB), tuberculosis infection (TBI), and their associated risk factors have not been studied. The diagnosis and treatment of TBI remain a major bottleneck in eradicating TB. ATB and TBI risk among residents living in the congregate setting of monasteries in Sikkim, India, a high-TB burden area, may be high d

INTRODUCTION: The primary liver cancer of greatest concern is hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). It covers almost 80% of liver cancer in the global population, and in the next two decades, it is expected to increase by 15%. The biomarker-based study has therapeutic potential to enhance therapy responses for HCC.
AIM: Thus, the present study investigates genetic polymorphisms in key genes from HCC patients in Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim, India, where regional and ethnic variation possibly establishes the pattern of mutations.
METHODS: Hence, we used an in-house structured questionnaire to colle

BACKGROUND: Educational initiatives targeting at-risk populations have long been recognized as a mainstay of ongoing rabies control efforts. Cluster-based studies are often utilized to assess levels of knowledge, attitudes and practices of a population in response to education campaigns. The design of cluster-based studies requires estimates of intra-cluster correlation coefficients obtained from previous studies. This study estimates the school-level intra-cluster correlation coefficient (ICC) for rabies knowledge change following an educational intervention program.
METHODS: A cross-section
