Background Medical and traumatic emergencies can be intimidating and stressful. This is especially true for early-career medical personnel.Training providers to respond effectively to medical emergencies before being confronted with a real scenario is limited by unnatural or high-cost training modalities that fail to realistically replicate the stress and gravity of real-world trauma management. Immersive virtual reality (IVR) may provide a unique training solution. Methods We created a working group of 10 active duty or former military emergency medicine physicians and two technical experts.

BACKGROUND: Neurosurgical training usually requires long hours for hands-on procedures, making it difficult for inexperienced surgeons to quickly learn in an error-proof environment. The objective of this study was to propose a puzzle-like new model for neurosurgical education that simulates craniosynostosis correction (scaphocephaly type) using Renier's H technique. A model of a 3-dimensional (3D) anatomic simulator for craniosynostosis training is presented and evaluated.
METHODS: The cranial model was created using 1-mm computed tomography scan images from patients with scaphocephaly in th

BACKGROUND: The challenges of training and assessing endourologic skill have driven the development of new training systems. The Center for Research in Education and Simulation Technologies (CREST) has developed a team and a methodology to facilitate this development process.
METHODS: Backwards design principles were applied. A panel of experts first defined desired clinical and educational outcomes. Outcomes were subsequently linked to learning objectives. Gross task deconstruction was performed, and the primary domain was classified as primarily involving decision-making, psychomotor skill,

Limited clinical site availability and an increased need for clinical training experiences often make it difficult for prehospital health care providers to complete new and annual training requirements. Medical simulation provides an alternative learning environment that provides trainees the opportunity to acquire and perfect new clinical skills without compromising patient care. The following is a detailed description of an air medical transport simulation of a neonate with hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy requiring transport to a higher level of care. Patient parameters were altered during f

CONTEXT: Simulation training has emerged as an effective way to complement clinical training of medical students. Yet outcomes from simulation training must be considered suboptimal when 25-30% of students fail to recognise a cardiac murmur on which they were trained 1 hour previously. There are several possible explanations for failure to improve following simulation training, which include the impact of heightened emotions on learning and cognitive overload caused by interactivity with high-fidelity simulators. This study was conducted to assess emotion during simulation training and to expl

Although simulation training improves post-training performance, it is unclear how well performance soon after simulation training predicts longer term outcomes (i.e., learning). Here our objective was to assess the predictive value of performance 1 h post-training of performance 6 weeks later. We trained 84 first year medical students a simulated case of chest pain due to aortic stenosis. They then received training on a case of acute onset dyspnea due to pulmonary embolism, after which we evaluated diagnostic performance on their trained murmur followed by novel murmur. We repeated the evalu

SIMmersion LLC is a software development company that creates human interactive training simulations. SIMmersion produces PC-based simulations of people with whom trainees are able to hold conversations. Trainees communicate with simulated characters in face-to-face conversations, using voice recognition technology. Topics that would match well with SIMmersion's simulation capabilities include diagnosis of depression, alcoholism, or drug use, grievance counseling, marriage counseling, suicide intervention, and first responder training for biological terrorism. SIMmersion's technology could be

BACKGROUND: Highly infectious but rare diseases require rapid dissemination of safety critical skills to health-care workers (HCWs). Simulation is an effective method of education; however, it requires competent instructors. We evaluated the efficacy of an internet-delivered train-the-trainer course to prepare HCWs to care for patients with Ebola virus disease (EVD).
METHODS: Twenty-four individuals without prior EVD training were recruited and divided into two groups. Group A included nine trainees taught by three experienced trainers with previous EVD training. Group B included 15 trainees

OBJECTIVE: To assess the impact of an oocyte retrieval simulation training program (ORSTP) on the clinical performance of residents.
METHODS: We performed a prospective comparative study. The Simulation (S) group included oocyte retrieval (OR) performed by residents who had undergone an ORSTP before performing them on patients (n = 422 OR), and the control (C) group included OR performed by residents who had not received prior simulation training (n = 329 OR). Our main outcome measure was the OR rate (ORR) (number of oocytes collected/number of follicles aspirated) during the first 3 months o

Nurses need therapeutic communication skills to de-escalate stressful situations. This qualitative study aimed to measure the effectiveness of role-play verbal de-escalation training simulations for Associate of Science degree nursing students. A three-step training process was implemented to teach verbal de-escalation techniques. Simulations were conducted using simulation patients rather than high-fidelity mannequins. Survey and debriefing data were evaluated using qualitative analysis. Student participants showed enhanced critical thinking and clinical preparedness for real patients, improv

INTRODUCTION: Simulation has become an increasingly important educational strategy in veterinary surgical training. This is driven by ethical considerations, the need to standardize skill acquisition, and limitations associated with training based on live animals and cadavers. However, the characteristics, scope, and validation of simulators used in veterinary surgery remain heterogeneous and insufficiently systematized. This study aimed to systematically review and characterize the simulators used in veterinary surgical education, focusing on their characteristics, applications, and validatio

BACKGROUND: Children and young people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) often face significant challenges in emergency departments (ED), where a high-acuity environment can exacerbate distress, leading to behaviours of concern (BOC). Identifying and managing BOC requires specialised skills, yet many healthcare professionals report a lack of confidence and structured training. Traditional educational models may lack real-world applicability by failing to incorporate the lived experiences of patients and families.
APPROACH: The Motivated for Change programme was codeveloped
