Three Professional Singers' Vocal Tract Dimensions in Operatic Singing, Kulning, and Edge-A Multiple Case Study Examining Loud Singing.

OBJECTIVE: A comprehensive understanding of how vocal tract dimensions vary among different types of loud voice productions has not yet been fully formed. This study aims to expand the existing knowledge on the topic. METHODS: Three trained professional singers together practiced the vocal techniques underlying Opera and Kulning singing styles for one hour and, afterwards, phonated using these techniques on vowel [iː] at pitch C5 (523 Hz), while their vocal tracts were scanned via MRI. One of the participants also produced the samples in the Edge vocal mode using [ɛː]. Several dimensional voc

From Singing to Speaking: Why Singing May Lead to Recovery of Expressive Language Function in Patients with Broca's Aphasia.

It has been reported that patients with severely nonfluent aphasia are better at singing lyrics than speaking the same words. This observation inspired the development of Melodic Intonation Therapy (MIT), a treatment whose effects have been shown, but whose efficacy is unproven and neural correlates remain unidentified. Because of its potential to engage/unmask language-capable regions in the unaffected right hemisphere, MIT is particularly well suited for patients with large left-hemisphere lesions. Using two patients with similar impairments and stroke size/location, we show the effects of M

Singing for people with aphasia (SPA): a protocol for a pilot randomised controlled trial of a group singing intervention to improve well-being.

INTRODUCTION: The singing for people with aphasia (SPA) intervention aims to improve quality of life and well-being for people with poststroke aphasia. A definitive randomised controlled trial (RCT) is required to assess the clinical and cost effectiveness of SPA. The purpose of this pilot study is to assess the feasibility of such a definitive trial and inform its design. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: A two-group, assessor-blinded, randomised controlled external pilot trial with parallel mixed methods process evaluation and economic evaluation. Forty-eight participants discharged from clinical speec

Membranous and cartilaginous vocal fold adduction in singing.

While vocal fold adduction is an important parameter in speech, relatively little has been known on the adjustment of the vocal fold adduction in singing. This study investigates the possibility of separate adjustments of cartilaginous and membranous vocal fold adduction in singing. Six female and seven male subjects, singers and non-singers, were asked to imitate an instructor in producing four phonation types: "aBducted falsetto" (FaB), "aDducted falsetto" (FaD), "aBducted Chest" (CaB), and "aDducted Chest" (CaD). The phonations were evaluated using videostroboscopy, videokymography (VKG), e

Singing by speechless (aphasic) children: Victorian medical observations.

In the second half of the nineteenth century, British clinicians made observations regarding the ability of individuals with impaired language abilities to sing or hum. One notable publication was of two cases of children briefly observed by John Hughlings Jackson (1835-1911) in 1871. These children were speechless but could produce some musical expression. Other such cases attracted the attention of Victorian clinicians who were actively pursuing theoretical questions regarding the organization of brain function and laterality. The presence of musical expression in children who failed to deve

Can singing exercises reduce snoring? A pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Snoring is not merely a common nuisance but has been identified as a risk factor for poor health. Last resort treatments for palate-based snoring are surgical - reducing the amount of soft palate and/or stiffening it by causing scarring. They carry a burden of risk and expense and have a high recurrence rate. OBJECTIVE: This pilot study was a first step in determining whether singing exercises could be used as a non-invasive treatment to increase muscle tone in the tissues of the throat and thereby reduce snoring. METHOD: The duration of snoring of 20 chronic snorers was recorded

Hemispheric lateralization of singing after intracarotid sodium amylobarbitone.

Hemispheric lateralization of singing was investigated in patients who had transient hemiplegia after intracarotid injection of sodium amylobarbitone. It was found that after right carotid injection singing was markedly deficient, whereas speech remained relatively intact. Songs were sung in a monotone, devoid of correct pitch rendering; rhythm was much less affected. By contrast, singing was less disturbed than speech after left carotid injection. The observations indicated a double dissociation; the right hemisphere contributed more for singing, whereas the left demonstrated its usual domina

[Phoniatric care for disorders of the professional singing voice].

In Germany, approximately 8% of the population uses their singing voice professionally or semi-professionally, while approximately 18% of children and young people sing in organised ensembles. Of all occupational groups, singers have the highest demands on vocal quality and performance, and even among semi-professionals, singing is often associated with high strain on the vocal apparatus. The requirements vary considerably, depending on whether the context is solo singing or singing in a choir, and they are also dependent on the chosen musical genre and the use of electroacoustic amplification

Morphological assessments of the oropharyngeal isthmus in professional singing.

and Aims We conducted this research motivated by the incomplete knowledge of the changes made by resonance and harmonic filtering processes made by articulatory gestures in the supralar-yngeal level of the vocal tract. Aim of research The goal of the study is to evaluate the adaptive changes taking place at the oropharyngeal isthmus during sustained phonation. Methods We focused on exploring the dynamics of the oropharyngeal pavilion in voice professionals using Cone-Beam Computed Tomogra-phy (CBCT). Our study included 14 women with soprano vocals and 12 tenor men in 3 different situations: mi

Singing is not associated with social complexity across species.

Based on their social bonding hypothesis, Savage et al. predict a relation between "musical" behaviors and social complexity across species. However, our qualitative comparative review suggests that, although learned contact calls are positively associated with complex social dynamics across species, songs are not. Yet, in contrast to songs, and arguably consistent with their functions, contact calls are not particularly music-like.

A comparative characterization of laryngeal anatomy in the singing mouse.

Sexual displays are some of the most dramatic and varied behaviors that have been documented. The elaboration of such behaviors often relies on the modification of existing morphology. To understand how display elaboration arises, we analyzed the laryngeal anatomy of three species of mice that vary in the presence and complexity of their vocal displays. Mice and rats have a specialized larynx that enables them to produce both low-frequency "audible" sounds, perhaps using vocal fold vibration, as well as distinct mechanisms that are thought to enable higher frequency sounds, such as vocal membr

Microglia Sing the Prelude of Neuroinflammation-Associated Depression.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a psychiatric condition characterized by sadness and anhedonia and is closely linked to chronic low-grade neuroinflammation, which is primarily induced by microglia. Nonetheless, the mechanisms by which microglia elicit depressive symptoms remain uncertain. This review focuses on the mechanism linking microglia and depression encompassing the breakdown of the blood-brain barrier, the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, the gut-brain axis, the vagus and sympathetic nervous systems, and the susceptibility influenced by epigenetic modifications on microglia. Partially Overlapping Brain Networks for Singing and Cello Playing.

This research uses an MR-Compatible cello to compare functional brain activation during singing and cello playing within the same individuals to determine the extent to which arbitrary auditory-motor associations, like those required to play the cello, co-opt functional brain networks that evolved for singing. Musical instrument playing and singing both require highly specific associations between sounds and movements. Because these are both used to produce musical sounds, it is often assumed in the literature that their neural underpinnings are highly similar. However, singing is an evolution

Singing for adults with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

BACKGROUND: Singing is a complex physical activity dependent on the use of the lungs for air supply to regulate airflow and create large lung volumes. In singing, exhalation is active and requires active diaphragm contraction and good posture. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a progressive, chronic lung disease characterised by airflow obstruction. Singing is an activity with potential to improve health outcomes in people with COPD. OBJECTIVES: To determine the effect of singing on health-related quality of life and dyspnoea in people with COPD. SEARCH METHODS: We identified t

Compulsive singing: another aspect of punding in Parkinson's disease.

We report on two patients with advanced Parkinson's disease who were exhibiting a peculiar and stereotyped behavior characterized by an irrepressible need to sing compulsively when under high-dose dopamine replacement therapy. Sharing many features with punding, this singing behavior is proposed as a distinct manifestation of the dopamine dysregulation syndrome in Parkinson's disease.
