Pathways linking parental divorce with adolescent depression.

This article examines the intervening pathways linking parental divorce with adolescent depression, using both cross-sectional and prospective data from a study of high school students in the Boston metropolitan area. Overall, findings reveal that parental divorce is linked with adolescent depression in two ways: (1) it is a source of numerous secondary problems and stresses that are causally related to depression, and (2) it alters youths' reactivity to these stresses, in some cases enhancing, but in other cases mitigating, their depressive effects. Analyses demonstrated the central role of e

Maternal incest as moral panic: envisioning futures without fathers in the South African lowveld.

During 2008, rumours about revolting incestuous encounters between sons and their mothers circulated in the Bushbuckridge municipality of the South African lowveld. This article views these rumours as expressing moral panic, paying particular attention to the historical contexts of their emergence and circulation, and to their temporal orientation. I locate these rumours in the periphery of South Africa's de-industrialising economy, marked by increased unemployment and criminality among men and by a growing prominence of women-headed households. They express a regressive temporalisation and pe

School phobia: patterns of family functioning.

Seventy-six families of children with school phobia were evaluated with the Family Assessment Measure. Mothers and fathers, as separate groups, rated clinically significant dysfunction in the parent-child relationship in the areas of role performance and values and norms. There were no significant differences between intact and single-parent families on ratings of family dysfunction. There was significantly less family dysfunction as rated by mothers and by children if the child had a diagnosis of pure anxiety disorder compared to families of school phobic children in other diagnostic categori

Being a solo mother without the involvement of a partner: an exploration of parenting experiences and support needs.

An increasingly common family type, often referred to as 'solo mothers', 'single mothers by choice' or 'choice mothers', comprises women who intentionally become mothers without the involvement of a partner. Although solo mothers are often described as self-determined, motivated and well prepared for parenting, with both economic and social resources, little is known about their parenting experiences and emotional and practical support needs. This cross-sectional exploratory study used an online survey to examine sources of emotional and practical parenting support, ease of asking for help and

Risk behaviours, victimisation and mental distress among adolescents in different family structures.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have shown an elevated risk with regard to social and behavioural domains in adolescents of single parents. However, the diversity of single parent families concerning gender of the resident parent has seldom been taken into account when investigating the relation between family structure and children's negative outcomes. Thus, the aim of this study was to investigate risk behaviours, victimisation and mental distress among adolescents in different family structures using more detailed sub-groups of single parents (i.e., single mother, single father and shared phys

Moderators of treatment effect in a randomised controlled trial of single- and multi-family therapy for anorexia nervosa in adolescents and emerging adults.

INTRODUCTION: Multi-family therapy for anorexia nervosa (MFT-AN) is a novel, group-based intervention that intensifies single-family therapy for anorexia nervosa (FT-AN), with the aim of improving outcomes. The current study explored treatment moderators in a randomised controlled trial (N = 167) of FT-AN and MFT-AN for young people (adolescents/emerging adults aged 13-20 years) with anorexia nervosa. METHODS: Data were analysed using multiple linear regression. Six hypothesised baseline participant and parent factors were tested as possible moderators of treatment effect on end-of-treatment

The influence of parental education on child mental health in Spain.

PURPOSE: To analyze the association between parental education and offspring's mental health in a nationally representative Spanish sample, and assess the contribution of other socioeconomic factors to the association. METHODS: We conducted a secondary analysis of data on 4- to 15-year-olds participating in the 2006 Spanish National Health Survey. Mental health was assessed using the parent-reported Strengths & Difficulties Questionnaire. Parents' respective educational levels were summarized in a single variable. Univariate and multivariate analyses, controlling for family-, child- and paren

Child well-being in single-mother families.

OBJECTIVES: Children from single-mother families are at increased risk of psychosocial morbidity. This article examines the strength of association between single-mother family status and child outcome, both alone and controlling for other sociodemographic and personal (maternal/family) variables. METHOD: Data from the Canadian National Longitudinal Survey of Children and Youth Cycle 1 (1994-1995) were used. Children aged 6 to 11 years in single-mother and two-parent families were included (n = 9,398). Child functioning measures included social impairment, psychiatric problems, and math score

Correlates of Impairment and Growth in Families of Young Autistic Children.

The purpose of this project was to investigate potential correlates of family life impairment in families of young autistic children. This project incorporated measures of specific child and parent challenges in addition to a commonly used unidimensional measure of autism characteristics. In this way, we could assess whether such challenges explain variance in family life impairment, and whether their inclusion diminish associations between autism characteristics and family life impairment. Cross-sectional data were collected from 564 parents of autistic children aged 2 to 5 years who particip

"Hope is so fragile": parent perspectives on the care of children with single-ventricle heart disease.

INTRODUCTION: Children born with single-ventricle heart disease face a myriad of medical comorbidities, psychological risks, and quality of life challenges as they age. Parent perspectives on their care from diagnosis through development are critical to understand best ways and times to intervene to promote child and family adjustment to illness. MATERIALS AND METHOD: Parents of children with status post-Fontan procedure were recruited to complete an electronic qualitative survey exploring parent perspectives of care. Grounded theory was utilised to analyse the data and identify themes and su

A cross-national comparison of the linkages between family structure histories and early adolescent substance use.

Family structure can influence adolescent health with cascading implications into adulthood. Life course theory emphasizes how this phenomenon is dynamic across time, contextualized in policy systems, and grounded in processes of selection and socialization. This study used data from the U.S. (National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1979 Child and Young Adults, n = 6,236) and U.K. (Millennium Cohort Study, n = 11,095) to examine associations between a single mother family structure between ages 0-14 and early adolescent substance use at age 14 across time and place, using inverse probability of

A culturally sensitive approach to therapy with immigrant families: the case of Jewish emigrants from the former Soviet Union.

This article is based on accumulated clinical experience in Israel with families that emigrated from the former Soviet Union. It describes a culturally sensitive systemic intervention with two such families: a single-parent family, and a family that exhibited physical violence. Relevant cultural characteristics of family patterns and parent-child relationships in Jewish-Soviet families are reviewed. It is demonstrated how a cross-cultural perspective may affect the interpretation of presented problems and result in a less pathological perspective. It is further illustrated how universal interv

Parental marital status and anxiety symptoms in adolescents: the mediating effect of childhood maltreatment.

Although previous studies have established the association between parental marital status and mental health problems in adolescents, however, the adverse effects of incomplete family settings and childhood maltreatment on adolescent anxiety symptoms have not been fully investigated. Moreover, whether childhood maltreatment can mediate the relationship between parental marital status and anxiety symptoms remains unclear. A population-based cross-sectional study was performed among 35,573 adolescents in elementary schools across 17 provinces in China. And childhood maltreatment, resilience, and

Parenting and homelessness: overview and introduction to the Special Section.

This overview of parenting and homelessness includes the characteristics and needs of families who are homeless, with a focus on the unique challenges faced by mothers, fathers, and children. In addition, the authors discuss how homeless families are narrowly defined based on the family members who present at shelters and other service programs. In order to fully support parents and their children as they exit homelessness, homeless service programs should consider the broader context of the nontraditional family system and support networks. The overview also includes common challenges to pare

Family structure, depressive symptoms, and childhood maltreatment in Chinese adolescents: a mediation analysis.

This study examined the mediating role of childhood maltreatment between family structure and adolescent depressive symptoms, utilizing a nationally representative sample of Chinese adolescents (N = 30,234). Depressive symptoms and childhood maltreatment were assessed with the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) and the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ), respectively. Compared to adolescents in two-parent biological families, those in single-parent, grandparent-headed, and other families exhibited a significantly higher risk of depression. Conversely, multigenerational families demonstrate

Psychosocial adjustment among children conceived via donor insemination by lesbian and heterosexual mothers.

This study examined the relations among family structure (e.g., number of parents, parental sexual orientation), family process (e.g., parents' relationship satisfaction, interparental conflict), and the psychological adjustment of children who had been conceived via donor insemination. The 80 participating families, all of whom had conceived children using the resources of a single sperm bank, included 55 families headed by lesbian and 25 families headed by heterosexual parents. Fifty families were headed by couples and 30 by single parents. Participating children averaged 7 years of age. Res

Conducting filial therapy with homeless parents.

Homelessness and the associated feelings of loss are highly distressing for parents and their children who experience them. The implications for young, homeless children are clinically significant, as these children tend to display higher rates of depressive, anxious feelings. The literature suggests that parents are especially challenged during a period of homelessness, as they cannot provide for their children financially or emotionally. Evidence-based mental health interventions, such as filial therapy, may assist the parent-child relationship by promoting healing during a highly distressin

Loneliness, problematic digital media use, and nutritional-metabolic vulnerability in adolescents from single-parent households: an integrative review of eating- and sleep-related pathways.

Adolescents from single-parent households may experience household time, economic, supervisory, and routine-related constraints that are relevant to psychosocial well-being, digital media use, eating behavior, sleep, and metabolic health. The objective of this integrative review was to synthesize evidence on the associations of loneliness and problematic digital media use with eating- and sleep-related behaviors in adolescents and to examine how single-parent household characteristics may influence these relationships. The review applies a contextual-behavioral vulnerability model in which hou

Treatment for Higher-Order Restricted Repetitive Behaviors (H-RRB) in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Restricted repetitive behaviors (RRB) are one of the core symptoms of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Evidence suggests that higher-order RRB (H-RRB) are particularly challenging and can negatively impact family functioning (e.g., insistence on sameness, following idiosyncratic routines). The study examined the effects of a parent-implemented behavior intervention using a multiple baseline single case experimental design in three young children with ASD. The intervention involved self-management procedures and included principles of pivotal response treatment during which parents provided bids
