Usability evaluation of augmented reality visualizations on an optical see-through head-mounted display for assisting machine operations.

This study explores the effect of using different visual information overlays and guiding arrows on a machine operation task with an optical see-through head-mounted display (OST-HMD). Thirty-four participants were recruited in the experiment. The independent variables included visual information mode (text, animation, and mixed text and animation) and the use of guiding arrows (with and without arrows). In addition, gender difference was also an objective of this study. The task performance indicators were determined based on task completion time and error counts as well as subjective measure

Effect of Visually Induced Motion Sickness from Head-Mounted Display on Cardiac Activity.

Head-mounted display (HMD) virtual reality devices can facilitate positive experiences such as co-presence and deep immersion; however, motion sickness (MS) due to these experiences hinders the development of the VR industry. This paper proposes a method for assessing MS caused by watching VR content on an HMD using cardiac features. Twenty-eight undergraduate volunteers participated in the experiment by watching VR content on a 2D screen and HMD for 12 min each, and their electrocardiogram signals were measured. Cardiac features were statistically analyzed using analysis of covariance (ANCOVA

Quantifying Motor and Cognitive Function of the Upper Limb Using Mixed Reality Smartglasses.

In our aging world, the need to measure and evaluate motor and cognitive functions and to automate physical and occupational therapy will increase in the future. Many studies on VR-based rehabilitation systems are already underway. However, there are some issues such as the risk of falling or crashing due to the complete blockage of visual information, VR sickness, and lack of reality. The purpose of this research is to develop a system that simultaneously measures and evaluates multiple abilities and functions, such as motor function, cognitive function, and prediction ability, by using mixed

Omnidirectional Galvanic Vestibular Stimulation in Virtual Reality.

In this paper we propose omnidirectional galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS) to mitigate cybersickness in virtual reality applications. One of the most accepted theories indicates that Cybersickness is caused by the visually induced impression of ego motion while physically remaining at rest. As a result of this sensory mismatch, people associate negative symptoms with VR and sometimes avoid the technology altogether. To reconcile the two contradicting sensory perceptions, we investigate GVS to stimulate the vestibular canals behind our ears with low-current electrical signals that are speci

Clinical Accuracy of Holographic Navigation Using Point-Based Registration on Augmented-Reality Glasses.

BACKGROUND: As current augmented-reality (AR) smart glasses are self-contained, powerful computers that project 3-dimensional holograms that can maintain their position in physical space, they could theoretically be used as a low-cost, stand-alone neuronavigation system. OBJECTIVE: To determine feasibility and accuracy of holographic neuronavigation (HN) using AR smart glasses. METHODS: We programmed a fully functioning neuronavigation system on commercially available smart glasses (HoloLens®, Microsoft, Redmond, Washington) and tested its accuracy and feasibility in the operating room. Automatic Fire Detection and Notification System Based on Improved YOLOv4 for the Blind and Visually Impaired.

The growing aging population suffers from high levels of vision and cognitive impairment, often resulting in a loss of independence. Such individuals must perform crucial everyday tasks such as cooking and heating with systems and devices designed for visually unimpaired individuals, which do not take into account the needs of persons with visual and cognitive impairment. Thus, the visually impaired persons using them run risks related to smoke and fire. In this paper, we propose a vision-based fire detection and notification system using smart glasses and deep learning models for blind and vi

VR HMD color calibration and accurate control of emitted light using Three.js.

Virtual reality (VR) can be used to design and create new types of psychophysical experiments. Its main advantage is that it frees us from the physical limitations of real-life experiments and the hardware and software limitations of experiments running on two-dimensional (2D) displays and computer graphics. However, color calibration of the displays is often required in vision science studies. Recent studies have shown that a standard color calibration of a head-mounted display (HMD) can be very challenging and comes with significant drawbacks. These drawbacks include the need to completely d

Enhancing Visual Exploration through Augmented Gaze: High Acceptance of Immersive Virtual Biking by Oldest Olds.

The diffusion of virtual reality applications dedicated to aging urges us to appraise its acceptance by target populations, especially the oldest olds. We investigated whether immersive virtual biking, and specifically a visuomotor manipulation aimed at improving visual exploration (augmented gaze), was well accepted by elders living in assisted residences. Twenty participants (mean age 89.8 years, five males) performed three 9 min virtual biking sessions pedalling on a cycle ergometer while wearing a Head-Mounted Display which immersed them inside a 360-degree pre-recorded biking video. Silent Speech Eyewear Interface: Silent Speech Recognition Method Using Eyewear and an Ear-Mounted Microphone with Infrared Distance Sensors.

As eyewear devices such as smart glasses become more common, it is important to provide input methods that can be used at all times for such situations and people. Silent speech interaction (SSI) has the potential to be useful as a hands-free input method for various situations and people, including those who have difficulty with voiced speech. However, previous methods have involved sensor devices that are difficult to use anytime and anywhere. We propose a method for SSI that involves using an eyewear device equipped with infrared distance sensors. The proposed method measures facial skin mo

Comparison between wrap around screens and a head mounted display on driver muscle and kinematic responses to a pedestrian hazard.

As driving performance relies heavily on the interpretation of visual information, driving simulators require a visual display that can effectively communicate the virtual environment to the driver. Most high-fidelity visual displays include an expensive system of high-definition projectors and wraparound screens. To reduce the overall cost of a driving simulator while preserving the generalizability of results to naturalistic driving, head mounted displays (HMD) are being considered as a substitute visual cueing system. Recent innovations to virtual reality technologies are encouraging, howev
