Social comparison processes play a central role in social cognition, but their relation to meaning in life remains unclear. We conducted an integrative analysis of three online studies with American, Indian, Peruvian, and French participants. After harmonizing the study-specific datasets, we examined whether social comparison orientation was associated with search for meaning and presence of meaning. Higher social comparison orientation was consistently associated with greater search for meaning, including after adjustment for age, gender, country, and presence of meaning. This association was

BACKGROUND: Social media users can choose how to project their image to make a positive impression on others through social media. Although online self-presentation desire is an emerging phenomenon that engages with the users' behavior on social media, empirical research and theoretical models on the topic are scarce. This study employs social comparison theory and the fear of missing out as mediators and social network type as a moderator to elucidate the effects of social media exposure on online self-presentation desire.
METHODS: A quantitative survey was conducted among 367 social media u

Social comparison, in which people evaluate their opinions and abilities by comparing them with the opinions and abilities of others, is a central feature of human social life. Previous work has highlighted the importance of social comparison in reward processing. However, the time-course of the social comparison effect in outcome evaluation remains largely unknown. The purpose of this study was to explore to what extent brain activity is modulated by social comparison between an individual and their anonymous partner. Event-related potentials (ERPs) were measured while the participants viewed

Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) shares many characteristics with social phobia (SP), including high levels of social anxiety and avoidance, but to our knowledge no studies have directly compared these disorders' demographic and clinical features. Demographic and clinical features were compared in individuals with BDD (n=172), SP (n=644), and comorbid BDD/SP (n=125). SP participants had a significantly earlier age of onset and lower educational attainment than BDD participants. BDD participants were significantly less likely to ever be married than SP participants, had a greater likelihood of ev

Seventy-four patients who met DSM-III criteria for social phobia completed 8 weeks of double-blind, randomly assigned treatment with the monoamine oxidase inhibitor phenelzine sulfate, the cardioselective beta-adrenergic blocker atenolol, or placebo. The overall response rates were 64% for phenelzine, 30% for atenolol, and 23% for placebo. Phenelzine was widely superior to both atenolol and placebo on independent rater analyses and, to a lesser extent, on self-report, with no significant differences between atenolol and placebo. At the end of 16 weeks, phenelzine was still significantly superi

The Social Attribution Task-Multiple Choice (SAT-MC) tests the ability to extract social themes from viewed object motion. This form of animacy perception is thought to aid the development of social inference, but appears impaired in schizophrenia. The current study was undertaken to examine psychometric equivalence of two forms of the SAT-MC and to compare their performance against social cognitive tests recommended for schizophrenia research. Thirty-two schizophrenia (SZ) and 30 substance use disorder (SUD) participants completed both SAT-MC forms, the Bell-Lysaker Emotion Recognition Task (

OBJECTIVE: To examine associations between sleep disturbance, social support, and social comparison among midlife and older adults, including the moderating role of gender.
METHODS: Adults ages ≥40 years (N = 557, MAge = 57, 53% men) completed a cross-sectional survey including validated measures of sleep disturbance, perceptions of social support, and social comparison orientation.
RESULTS: Sleep disturbance was negatively associated with social support (rs = -0.42 to - 0.33, ps = 0.001) and associations were stronger for men than women - particularly perceived support from friends (η 2 =

INTRODUCTION: In contemporary society, individuals are commonly exposed to multiple pressures, under which emotional disorders occur frequently. Especially the upward trend of depressive symptoms among the young population constitutes a non-negligible public health challenge. As social media is increasingly integrated into daily life, individuals' emotional experiences strongly connect with online interactions. Thus, it is essential to investigate the relationship between the social media usage behavior of young people and their mental health conditions.
METHODS: This study conducted an onlin

INTRODUCTION: Despite the similarities in poor social competence and clinical manifestations of poor social behavior, no study has compared the theory of mind performance between social anxiety disorder (SAD) and schizophrenia, considering the effect of social-evaluative anxiety and neurocognitive functions. In our study, we aimed to compare the theory of mind functions and social-evaluative anxiety between patients with SAD and schizophrenia and healthy controls and to examine the relationship between the theory of mind, neurocognitive skills, and social-evaluative anxiety.

Social support is a robust correlate of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms and of general psychological distress (Ozer, Best, Lipsey, & Weiss, 2003). The nature of the causal relationship between support and PTSD remains the subject of debate, with 2 models, social erosion and social causation, often used to explain findings. Despite extensive research using these models, no studies of which we are aware have included tests of both models within the same series of analyses, across more than 2 time points, in veterans. These competing models were tested in a sample of National Guard

Shame and loneliness are two important emotions that have been suggested to play a maintaining role in social anxiety disorder (SAD). However, it is not clear whether emotional processes involving these emotions are predominantly experienced in SAD or shared with other anxiety disorders. In the present study we examined the temporal relationship between shame and loneliness on one hand and anxiety on the other among individuals with SAD and among individuals with panic disorder (PD). We used a daily diary design in which participants reported their emotional experiences every evening for 21 co

PURPOSE: Social anxiety disorder is a debilitating anxiety disorder associated with significant life impairment. The purpose of the present study is to evaluate overall functioning for adults who stutter with and without a diagnosis of social anxiety disorder.
METHOD: Participants were 275 adults who stuttered (18-80 years), including 219 males (79.6%) and 56 females (20.4%), who were enrolled to commence speech treatment for stuttering. Comparisons were made between participants diagnosed with social anxiety disorder (n = 82, 29.8%) and those without that diagnosis (n = 193, 70.2%).

The construct of avoidance has begun to receive attention in theoretical models and empirical investigations of depression. However, little is known about relative levels of avoidance across diagnostic categories or about the relationships between avoidance and other correlates of depression. The present study compared levels of avoidance across groups of depressed women without social anxiety disorder (MDD without SAD), depressed women with social anxiety disorder (MDD with SAD), women with social anxiety disorder (SAD), and nonclinical women, and investigated the relationships among avoidanc

The objective of this study was to ascertain the number of articles published per annum on the topics of avoidant personality disorder (APD) and social phobia (SP) in the period from 1973 to 2001. We hypothesized that while annual publication rates on SP would exhibit a sound growth, the number of scientific articles on APD published per annum would present a stagnant or declining trend. We performed a comprehensive literature review on APD and SP using the three largest existing databases for medical and psychological journals: MEDLINE, PsycINFO, and Web of Science. The references were gather

BACKGROUND: Avoidant personality disorder (APD) is generally believed to be related to social phobia (SP), especially to generalized subtype. However, it has also been reported to be prevalent in panic disorder-agoraphobia (PDA). In the present investigation, we wished to explore whether APD in each of these disorders has discriminatory features.
METHOD: We studied 71 SP and 119 PDA patients with state-of-the-art clinical instruments based on DSM-III-R.
RESULTS: The pattern of social avoidance in SP was more pervasive: it was characterized by a higher level of interpersonal sensitivity and g

BACKGROUND: Patients with social phobia often describe a general interpersonal sensitivity and meet criteria for DSM-III-R avoidant personality disorder. This study addresses the question of whether patients with social phobia have characteristic abnormal personality traits.
METHOD: A questionnaire with 140 items for self-rating personality traits was constructed for the study. Ratings obtained from 63 patients with social phobia were compared with ratings from 58 healthy controls. Structured interviews were also conducted with the patients to establish whether their disorders met the criteri

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is a common and debilitating disorder. Emotion differentiation (ED), the ability to identify and label distinct emotional experiences, is an emotional construct that plays an important role in SAD. Specifically, ED is vital for adaptive emotion regulation and previous research has suggested it may be disrupted in SAD. The present study examined ED among individuals with social anxiety disorder (SAD; n = 44), panic disorder (PD; n = 29), and a control group without SAD or PD (n = 43). Participants were recruited from the community and diagnosed in the lab, and were

Perceived social impressions - namely, how individuals believe they come across in social situations - are often evaluated by engaging in social comparison. Such evaluations may shape cognition, affect, and behavior. However, a validated measure to assess social impression comparisons is lacking. Therefore, we developed and validated the Social Impression Comparison Scale (SICS) that assesses the frequency of upward and downward social comparison of social impressions, the perceived discrepancy to the standard, and the affective impact of these comparisons during the last three weeks, in two s

BACKGROUND: Research suggests that social exclusion is a problem both for people with intellectual disabilities (ID) and for people living in rural areas. This may give rise to a double disadvantage for people with ID living in rural areas. Conversely, aspects of rural life such as community spirit and social support may protect against social exclusion in this population. This study was designed to compare a number of measures of social exclusion in adults with ID living in rural and urban areas, with the aim of identifying whether a double disadvantage exists.
METHOD: Adults with ID were re
