Effects of Social Stories on Increasing Social Interaction and Engagement of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder in Inclusive Settings.

d/Deaf or hard of hearing (d/Dhh) students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) may require specific approaches to promote social inclusion. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of reading social stories with American Sign Language vocabulary to students who are d/Dhh with ASD (d/Dhh-ASD) and their peers in inclusive settings, using a non-concurrent multiple baseline design across participants. To examine the effectiveness of the intervention, the frequency of four communicative social behaviors and the duration of social engagement with peers were recorded for each particip

Toward Inclusive Social Cognition Assessment: Validating a Unified Battery for Hearing and Deaf Children.

The Social Cognition Battery (SCB) was validated as an inclusive tool for assessing social cognition (SC) in hearing and deaf children, addressing cross-cultural gaps. Participants included 154 hearing (M age = 8.10, SD = 1.56) and 30 deaf children (M age = 9.80, SD = 1.97) from Latin America. Exploratory Factor Analysis revealed a unifactorial SC structure (RMSEA = 0.069, CFI = 0.962) with high reliability (ω = 0.753). Age predicted SC in hearing children, while school year better explained SC in deaf children. ROC analysis (AUC = 0.8126) confirmed strong discriminative ability. The SCB is a

Community case study: Community-driven strategies to build a socially inclusive rural county.

Mitchell County, Kansas is a rural county with a strong sense of local identity and a population committed to community well-being. Like many rural areas, however, residents experience structural challenges to social connection, including geographic isolation, demographic shifts, and limited access to inclusive services. These issues were further exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Through a federally funded initiative, Communities Organizing to Promote Equity (COPE), Mitchell County stakeholders developed community-driven strategies to address social isolation, with special consideration on

The feeling of exclusion and/or inclusion in shared places: Syrian students' emotions and social imaginations in Istanbul.

This article examines the dynamic relationship between the creation of place and the formation of identity, specifically focusing on how Syrian young people are either included or excluded in Istanbul. This dynamic process enables the students to engage in placemaking. The majority of the literature primarily centres on the potential for inclusion or exclusion within the context of migration. Nevertheless, I maintain my view that the dynamics between insiders and outsiders are closely interconnected in discourses about space. In this regard, it is worth exploring how the concept of Thirdspace

Adapting to students' social and health needs: suggested framework for building inclusive models of practice.

OBJECTIVE: This article builds on earlier discussions about college health research. The author suggests a 5-step framework that research practitioners can use to build models of practice that accurately address the needs of diverse campus populations. METHODS: The author provides 3 illustrations, drawn from published research examining college women with eating-related concerns, making the case for the importance of the Eating Disorders Not Otherwise Specified Diagnosis; examining African American students' social adjustment, making the case for an innovative model of needs; and examining mi

Disability, social functioning and school inclusion among older children and adolescents living with HIV in Zimbabwe.

OBJECTIVE: Increasing numbers of children with HIV are surviving to adolescence and encountering multiple clinical and social consequences of long-standing HIV infection. We aimed to investigate the association between HIV and disability, social functioning and school inclusion among 6- to 16-year-olds in Zimbabwe. METHODS: HIV-infected children receiving antiretroviral therapy from a public-sector HIV clinic and HIV-uninfected children attending primary care clinics in the same catchment area were recruited. Standardised questionnaires were used to collect socio-demographic, social functioni

Predictors of social inclusion among adults with severe mental illness: Results of a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Promoting social inclusion is crucial for people living with severe mental illness (SMI), who often experience high levels of social exclusion. However, research that uses a psychometric social inclusion measure to identify factors that determine varying levels of social inclusion in individuals with SMI is scarce. AIMS: This study aimed to examine to what extent people with SMI feel socially included and to identify factors associated with perceived social inclusion among people with SMI. METHOD: A cross-sectional multicenter investigation of psychiatric inpatients and day hospi

Does assistive technology contribute to social inclusion for people with intellectual disability? A systematic review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this review is to answer the following question: Does assistive technology contribute to social inclusion for people with intellectual disability? Previous research on assistive technology has focused on socioeconomic impacts such as education, employment and access to healthcare by people with intellectual disability. There is a need to consolidate evidence on the interaction between intellectual disability, assistive technology, community living and social inclusion. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: The review will consider studies from all settings: geographical, socioeconomi

The role of social schema in the experience of auditory hallucinations: a systematic review and a proposal for the inclusion of social schema in a cognitive behavioural model of voice hearing.

UNLABELLED: The interpersonal nature of the voice-hearing experience has been highlighted in recent studies investigating whether social processes (or 'schemas') that guide interpersonal interactions also govern the relationship between voice hearer and voice. A systematic literature review of relevant studies was undertaken, including those that investigated how social processes interact with appraisals of voices, as well as affective and behavioural responding to voices. The review included 13 studies published between 2000 and 2010. Two well-replicated findings emerged from the review. Firs

Revisiting the Proximal Dominance Assumption: Community Social Inclusion in an Ecological Analysis of Finnish Adolescent Mental Health.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Adolescent mental health is shaped by multiple ecological contexts. However, ecological research has often assumed that proximal microsystems show stronger associations with mental health than broader environments. This proximal dominance assumption has rarely been tested within comprehensive models comparing multiple domains across different outcomes. This study assessed whether perceived community social inclusion shows associations with mental health beyond more proximal factors in a large Finnish sample. METHODS: Data from the 2019 Finnish School Health Promotion S

Ripple Effects Mapping of a gender equity and social inclusion behaviour change activity in Uganda's trachoma effort.

BACKGROUND: Uganda's trachoma program has faced persistent challenges in achieving adequate preventive medicine coverage. To address these, the Ministry of Health applied Ripple Effects Mapping (REM) to assess a gender equity and social inclusion (GESI) behaviour change activity (BCA). To our knowledge, this represents one of the first documented applications of REM to a neglected tropical disease (NTD) program. METHODS: Seven REM workshops were conducted with government officials, health staff and community members. Facilitators guided participants to identify the BCA's inputs, outputs and i

Resilience and mental health among care leavers: Role of social inclusion, self-determination, and independent living skills.

OBJECTIVE: Young people transitioning from out-of-home care (OHC) frequently experience poor mental health and resilience due to adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). However, there is limited understanding of the factors that mediate and moderate these outcomes. This is the first study to integrate linked administrative and longitudinal data to examine the mediation and moderation effects of placement stability, independent living skills (ILS), social inclusion, and self-determination when examining the association between ACEs and care status on mental health and resilience. Empowering youth with disabilities through community-based approaches: a scoping review protocol on livelihood and social inclusion.

INTRODUCTION: Youth with disabilities in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) face persistent exclusion from education, employment and social participation. Those affected by leprosy often experience additional stigma, discrimination and structural barriers that further restrict empowerment, livelihood opportunities and social inclusion. Community-based approaches, including Community-Based Rehabilitation (CBR) and Community-Based Inclusive Development, aim to promote inclusion by empowering individuals and addressing barriers. However, evidence on how these approaches contribute to empowe

A "Round, Bruising Sort of Pain": Autistic Girls' Social Camouflaging in Inclusive High School Settings.

Although autistic females often "camouflage" their autism, few studies examine the degree to which adolescent females demonstrate these behaviors in inclusive school settings. We examined: (a) the nature, extent, and underlying motivation of camouflaging in high school; (b) the extent to which autistic girls' characteristics related to camouflaging settings, people, benefits, costs, and school supports; and (c) how girls' open-ended descriptions agreed with closed-ended camouflaging ratings. Using quantitative and qualitative analyses, this study examined the extent, domains, costs, and benefi

Persons Experiencing Homelessness during Extreme Temperatures: Lessons for Promoting Socially Inclusive Adaptive Capacity.

Climate change and increasing extreme temperatures present unique challenges to persons experiencing homelessness (PEH), including heightened physical and psychological harm. While green and urban infrastructure has emerged as one possible mitigation strategy, homeless populations are rarely included in municipal disaster planning or infrastructure research. This study used in-depth interviews with PEH (N = 42) during the summers of 2022 and 2023. Questions were designed around phenomenological methods to explore the individuals' firsthand descriptions of the lived experience of coping during

Social-emotional functioning in young people with symptoms of eating disorders: A gender inclusive analogue study.

INTRODUCTION: Contemporary models of eating disorders (EDs) suggest that EDs are maintained by social-emotional difficulties. However, supporting evidence is derived largely from female, clinic-based samples. This study, which refrained from gender specific inclusion criteria, aimed to improve understanding of social-emotional functioning in a large community-based analogue sample of young adults aged 16-26. METHODS: Five hundred and forty-four participants (85.1% female; mean age 21, SD = 4.3) completed the Eating Attitudes Test, Clinical Outcomes in Routine Evaluation, Difficulties in Emoti

Social inclusion and exclusion of people with mental illness in Timor-Leste: a qualitative investigation with multiple stakeholders.

BACKGROUND: Social inclusion is a human right for all people, including people with mental illness. It is also an important part of recovery from mental illness. In Timor-Leste, no research has investigated the social experiences of people with mental illness and their families. To fill this knowledge gap and inform ongoing mental health system strengthening, we investigated the experiences of social inclusion and exclusion of people with mental illness and their families in Timor-Leste. METHODS: Eighty-five participants from the following stakeholder groups across multiple locations in Timor

Barriers to health and social inclusion among transgender and MSM populations in India: a mixed-methods multicentric study.

BACKGROUND: Despite legal reforms advancing the rights of transgender (TG) individuals and men who have sex with men (MSM) in India, social exclusion, stigma and systemic barriers continue to undermine their access to healthcare and social services. Evidence on identity recognition, service utilisation and healthcare gaps remains limited. METHODS: We conducted a sequential explanatory mixed-methods study. Gender equity and social inclusion in mass drug administration for neglected tropical diseases in post-conflict South Sudan.

PURPOSE: Despite the implementation of ongoing mass drug administration (MDA) campaigns, South Sudan remains endemic for six Preventive Chemotherapy Neglected Tropical Diseases (PC-NTDs); this persistent endemicity is attributed to complex sociocultural barriers and healthcare delivery challenges. Integrating gender equity and social inclusion (GESI) is essential to identify barriers to equitable MDA delivery and develop targeted, inclusive solutions. METHODS: This study includes a assessment of barriers among adults who did not receive MDA during the most recent campaign, which employed WI-H
