OBJECTIVES: Recorded music risks overstimulation in NICUs. The live elements of music such as rhythm, breath, and parent-preferred lullabies may affect physiologic function (eg, heart and respiratory rates, O2 saturation levels, and activity levels) and developmental function (eg, sleep, feeding behavior, and weight gain) in premature infants.
METHODS: A randomized clinical multisite trial of 272 premature infants aged ≥32 weeks with respiratory distress syndrome, clinical sepsis, and/or SGA (small for gestational age) served as their own controls in 11 NICUs. Infants received 3 interventions

Oral behaviors, including feeding, drinking, grooming, and non-nutritive behaviors, are used as indicators of health and welfare in dairy calves, but continuous measurement of these behaviors can be labor intensive. Instantaneous sampling is often used to save labor but has only been validated for feeding behavior in calves. One-zero sampling may be an appropriate strategy well suited to capturing the rapid performance of non-nutritive behaviors. Our objective was to validate 1-0 and instantaneous sampling for measurement of oral behaviors around the time of bottle delivery against true values

Persistent thumb sucking beyond early childhood may be associated with dental, dermatologic, and psychosocial complications and can prove resistant to conventional behavioral interventions. This case report describes the use of clinical hypnosis for persistent thumb sucking in nearly 6-year-old monozygotic twin girls. During the first session, Twin A and Twin B participated simultaneously in a developmentally adapted hypnotic intervention. At the second session, Twin A declined further hypnosis and engaged instead in a supportive therapeutic conversation, while Twin B received an additional hy

One of the core skills required in lactation support is understanding and correcting ineffective or painful breastfeeding. The behavior being corrected, however, occurs inside the infant's mouth, making it difficult to see and assess. When providing care in the field, we use standardized tools and digital suck exams. In research, instruments have been developed to measure infant suck strength with a pacifier, bottle, or at the breast using ultrasound. The aim of this article is to introduce a simple manual clinical technique to identify areas of weakness in an infant's suck and describe one tr

To survive, the newborn lamb must be able to maintain body temperature and to stand and move to the udder to suck colostrum to fuel heat production. The objective of this study was to investigate whether neonatal lambs showing slow behavioral progress to standing and sucking also have an impaired ability to maintain body temperature. The time taken to stand and suck after birth, rectal temperatures, and blood samples were collected from 115 newborn single, twin, and triplet lambs of 2 breeds, Scottish Blackface and Suffolk, which are known to show variations in their neonatal behavioral progre

At the level of the whole muscle, contractile patterns during activity are a critical and necessary source of variation in function. Understanding if a muscle is actively lengthening, shorting, or remaining isometric has implications for how it is working to power a given behavior. When feeding, the muscles associated with the tongue, jaws, pharynx, and hyoid act together to transport food through the oral cavity and into the esophagus. These muscles have highly coordinated firing patterns, yet also exhibit high levels of regional heterogeneity in both their timing of activity and their contra

Thumb sucking is a common oral habit during early childhood and is generally considered normal during infancy. However, persistence of the habit beyond the preschool years may result in adverse dentofacial changes, including increased overjet, anterior open bite, and altered oral function. Early intervention is often required to prevent the progression of these malocclusions. A 5-year-old boy presented with a persistent thumb-sucking habit of one year's duration, predominantly during daytime hours. Clinical examination revealed a high-arched palate and the presence of a callus on the thumb, co

The physiologic and behavioral basis of normal canine and feline feeding is given in detail. Abnormalities of ingestive behavior include obesity and anorexia in both species, flank or blanket sucking in Doberman Pinschers, coprophagia and stone chewing in dogs, and wool chewing in cats. Drinking behavior is discussed briefly, and the abnormalities of hypernatremia (a failure of thirst) and psychogenic polydipsia and polyphagia are reviewed.

BACKGROUND: Pacifiers have been shown to affect maxillary growth related to the anatomic structure of the palate and forces placed upon it during sucking. This study compares and evaluates the mechanical behavior of pacifiers of different design and size (i.e., fit), identified by brand and size, positioned in age-specific palatal models with respect to both contact area and force when subjected to peristaltic tongue function and intraoral pressure related to non-nutritive sucking.
METHODS: Nonlinear finite element analyses were used to simulate dynamic mechanical interaction between the paci

Infants experiencing frequent aspiration, the entry of milk into the airway, are often prescribed thickened fluids to improve swallow safety. However, research on the outcomes of thickened milk on infant feeding have been limited to documenting rates of aspiration and the rheologic properties of milk following thickening. As a result, we have little insight into the physiologic and behavioral mechanisms driving differences in performance during feeding on high viscosity milk. Understanding the physiologic and behavioral mechanisms driving variation in performance at different viscosities is es

BACKGROUND: One criterion for infant NICU discharge is the ability to meet all nutritional needs by mouth, therefore, it is important to understand interventions that can improve the trajectory to full oral feeding. While many oral motor and feeding interventions are used in clinical practice, it remains unclear which are supported by the literature.
AIM: The aim of this integrative review was to identify and understand what oral motor interventions are defined in the literature to support positive outcomes for preterm infants and their parents.
METHODS: An integrative review of studies publ

Non-nutritive sucking behaviors such as finger- and tongue-sucking, tongue thrust, lips- or cheek-sucking, nail-, lip- or tongue-biting and other pressure habits represent risk factors for malocclusion. The association between psycho-neurological disorders and different types of malocclusion in children with sucking habits was long studied. During neurological examination, many children with sucking habits are diagnosed as Minimal Cerebral Dysfunction or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) bearers. The aim of this study is to assess the psycho-neurological status and motor disorder

Journal of clinical child and adolescent psychology : the official journal for the Society of Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology, American Psychological Association, Division 532015eng
Habits, such as hair pulling and thumb sucking, have recently been grouped into a category of clinical conditions called body-focused repetitive behavior disorders (BFRBDs). These behaviors are common in children and, at extreme levels, can cause physical and psychological damage. This article reviews the evidence base for psychosocial treatment of pediatric BFRBDs. A review of academic databases and published reviews revealed 60 studies on psychosocial treatments for pediatric BFRBDs, 23 of which were deemed suitable for review. Based on stringent methodological and evidence base criteria, we

OBJECTIVE: Determine the association between nun-nutritive sucking habits and anterior open bite in children.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This systematic review and meta-analysis followed the PRISMA guidelines. A systematic searched of four databases was conducted through the end of February 2025. Study designs included observational and interventional studies. Nun-nutritive sucking habits was evaluated in three categories: (1) ever versus never; (2) longer periods versus shorter periods; (3) daily versus not daily. We considered anterior open bite as the outcome. Based on meta-analyses, the poole

BACKGROUND: Premature infants may experience increased difficulty with nutrition and growth. Successful oral feeding is an important factor associated with discharge readiness. Despite the importance of feeding as a growth-fostering process, little empiric evidence exists to guide recommendations for early interventions.
PURPOSE: Evaluate whether specific elements of sucking, during preterm initiation of oral feeding, predict sucking organization at corrected term age.
METHODS: Sucking performance of 88 preterm infants born between 24 and 34 weeks of post-menstrual age was measured at baseli

Objectives: Oral sucrose is commonly used to provide analgesia to neonates during painful procedures, such as venepuncture. The additional benefits of reducing pain during venepuncture when oral sucrose is combined with nonpharmacological strategies have not been extensively studied. This randomized controlled trial compared the efficacy of oral sucrose with nonnutritive sucking vs. oral sucrose with nonnutritive sucking plus "holding-cuddling" for pain management during venepuncture in term infants from birth to 3 months of life. Methods: Seventy-eight infants were equally randomized to recei

This case study examines the dental effects of a persistent thumb-sucking habit by comparing monozygotic twins-one with the habit and one without. With genetic and environmental variables largely controlled, this model isolates the impact of nonnutritive sucking on occlusal development. Clinical and diagnostic assessments revealed that the twin with the habit exhibited an anterior open bite, increased overjet, narrower maxillary arch width, deeper palatal vault, and altered incisor inclinations. A unilateral right-sided functional shift crossbite was also observed. Molar relationships were sim
