AIMS: This study examined prevalence and correlates of non-fatal gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB) overdose in sexual and gender minority (SGM) people.
METHODS: Cross sectional analyses leveraged baseline data from a subset of 1815 participants from US cohort of SGM people that reported recent GHB use. The outcome was any self-reported nonfatal GHB overdose in the past year. The exposure was a syndemic burden score (0-4), based on the presence of depressive symptoms and hypersexual disorder, childhood sexual assault, and intimate partner violence. Multivariable logistic regression was used to exami

Drug use, mental distress, and other psychosocial factors threaten HIV care for youth living with HIV (YLWH). We aimed to identify syndemic psychosocial patterns among YLWH and examine how such patterns shape HIV outcomes. Using baseline data from 208 YLWH enrolled in an HIV treatment adherence intervention, we performed latent class analysis on dichotomized responses to 9 psychosocial indicators (enacted HIV stigma; clinical depression and anxiety; alcohol, marijuana, and illicit drug misuse; food and housing insecurity; legal history). We used multinomial logistic regression to assess latent

BACKGROUND: This case series describes an evolving relationship between the opioid crisis and climate change. As the climate continues to warm, patients with opioid use disorders will be at heightened risk for complications and even death. Little has been written on the specific intersection of heat-related illness and opioid use.
OBJECTIVES: This paper highlights a particular vulnerability among people with opioid use disorder to encourage further research and inform care practices among community and health care providers.
DISCUSSION: The opioid crisis and climate change have the potential

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Over the past decade, Sub-Saharan Africa has entered a new phase in the evolution of the global syndemic of undernutrition, obesity, and climate change. Earlier reviews, largely based on evidence before 2018, documented the emergence of overlapping nutritional and environmental vulnerabilities. This review provides an updated synthesis of epidemiological evidence published between 2019 and 2025 to capture recent shifts in magnitude, distribution, and interactions of the syndemic components across Africa. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent data indicate that adult obesity prevalence in

BACKGROUND: The opioid epidemic has been ongoing for over 20 years in the United States. As opioid misuse has shifted increasingly toward injection of illicitly produced opioids, it has been associated with HIV and hepatitis C transmission. These epidemics interact to form the opioid syndemic.
METHODS: We obtain annual county-level counts of opioid overdose deaths, treatment admissions for opioid misuse, and newly diagnosed cases of acute and chronic hepatitis C and newly diagnosed HIV from 2014 to 2019. Aligned with the conceptual framework of syndemics, we develop a dynamic spatial factor m

Social determinants of health play a crucial role in health and disease. In current times, it has become increasingly known that biological and non-biological factors are potentially linked and help to drive disease. For example, links between various comorbidities, both physical and mental illnesses, are known to be driven by social, environmental and economic determinants. This contributes to worse disease outcomes. This article discusses the concept of syndemics, which although well-described in some conditions, represents a novel concept in the context of rheumatic and musculoskeletal dise

Physical and emotional adversities in mothers have rippling effects across the family system. While an association between individual maternal adversities and problematic mental health outcomes has been established, less is known about co-existing adversities in mothers. Consistent with the syndemic conceptual framework, we examined the co-occurrence of Substance Abuse, Violence, and AIDS/HIV (i.e., SAVA), which are three adversities that uniquely affect racial/ethnic minorities, individuals living in poverty, and people in urban communities. We assessed the relationship between SAVA adversiti

OBJECTIVE: In this article, we adopt a syndemic approach to immigrant tuberculosis (TB) in Canada as a way of challenging contemporary epidemiological models of infectious diseases that tend to racialize and medicalize the risk of infections in socio-economically disadvantage populations and obscure the role of social conditions in sustaining the unequal distribution of diseases in these populations.
DESIGN: A syndemic approach unravels social and biological connections which shape the distribution of infections over space and time and is useful in de-racializing and de-medicalizing these epi

Transgender communities are among the groups at highest risk for HIV infection in the United States. Using syndemic theory, we examine how HIV risk in transgender communities is embedded in multiple co-occurring public health problems, including poor mental health, substance use, violence and victimization, discrimination, and economic hardship. Although safer sex counseling and testing programs are essential platforms for HIV intervention, these modalities alone may be insufficient in reducing new infections. Multicomponent interventions are necessary to respond to the complex interacting syn

The distribution of violence, sexually transmitted infections, and substance use disorders is not random, but rather the product of disease, behavior, and social conditions that co-occur in synergistic ways (syndemics). Syndemics often disproportionately affect urban communities. Studies of syndemics, however, rarely apply consistent measures of social conditions. Here, the construct of social stability (SS) (housing, legal, residential, income, employment, and relationship stability) was evaluated as a consistent measure of social conditions related to sex, drug, and violence exposures in a n

A syndemic is the convergence of two or more diseases in the same space and time. In Mexico, the dengue epidemic is active and predominates in areas of the Pacific and the Gulf of Mexico; in turn, the COVID-19 epidemic severely affects the same areas as dengue fever. Given that both these diseases share many clinical manifestations, in areas where tropical diseases are endemic, it is important to make careful evaluations of the patient who consults for fever in order to establish a timely diagnosis. Laboratory diagnostic tests are necessary to take the pertinent measures for each patient. In M

BACKGROUND: People living with HIV infection are disproportionately burdened by trauma and the resultant negative health consequences, making the combination of HIV infection and trauma a syndemic illness. Despite the high co-occurrence and negative influence on health, trauma and posttraumatic sequelae in people living with HIV infection often go unrecognized and untreated because of the current gaps in medical training and lack of practice guidelines.
OBJECTIVE: We set out to review the current literature on HIV infection and trauma and propose a trauma-informed model of care to target this

Much progress has been made in advancing antiretroviral (ART) adherence, yet disparities remain. To explore relationships of syndemic conditions - co-occurring health conditions caused by combinations of biological, social, and structural factors - to ART adherence among African American men, we used data from longitudinal assessments of 302 African American men enrolled in a study designed to increase physical activity and healthy eating. Syndemic conditions included alcohol dependency, drug dependency, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and unstable housing. A syndemic conditions va

Dengue and chikungunya have been endemic in India but have the tendency to cause periodic epidemics, often together, wherein they are termed 'syndemic'. Such a syndemic was observed in 2016 in India which resulted in a further scarcity of already resource-poor specific diagnostic infrastructure even in many urban conglomerates. A cross-sectional study was thus conducted, on 978 fever patients that consulted the ICMR-NIMR fever clinic, New Delhi, in September 2016, with an objective to identify symptom/s that could predict chikungunya with certainty. The overall aim was to rationally channelize

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Persons living with HIV (PLWH) are aging, continue to use alcohol and other substances, and experience age-associated adverse effects. We explore a new syndemic: OATH (opioids and other substances, aging, alcohol, tobacco, and HIV).
RECENT FINDINGS: Frailty and falls are important problems that affect the health status of PLWH who continue to use alcohol and other substances. HIV, alcohol and other substance use, and aging each contributes to inflammaging. Multimorbidity and polypharmacy are also important pathways as alcohol and other substances interact with prescribed me

This study examined the effect of four syndemic conditions-namely, polydrug use, depression, childhood sexual abuse, and intimate partner violence-on rates of HIV transmission risk behavior (TRB) and separately, transactional sex among transgender women. TRB was defined as the number of condomless penetrative sex events with a casual or main partner of discordant or unknown HIV status. Using data from 212 transgender women in New York City, multivariable analyses revealed that, compared to those with no syndemic conditions, dramatically higher rates of recent HIV TRB events (ARR = 8.84, p < 0.

Child-headed households (CHHs) have become a salient feature of family life in parts of Southern Africa where HIV/AIDS, poverty, labour migration, and, more recently, COVID-19 have interacted to produce a syndemic that has eroded adult caregiving capacity. These intersecting structural pressures have contributed to sustained orphanhood, household instability, and the reorganisation of caregiving responsibilities within families. This article examines how children in CHHs in rural Lesotho navigate the intersecting effects of HIV/AIDS and COVID-19, negotiate caregiving responsibilities, and cons
