Photobiomodulation and Stem Cell Therapy for Temporomandibular Joint Disc Disorders.

Background: Temporomandibular disorder (TMD) refers to a group of disorders affecting the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and its related muscles. The two commonly used treatment modalities for TMD are occlusal splint therapy and relaxation therapy. Neither comprises definitive treatment. Objective: The objective of this review was to report updated information on photobiomodulation and stem cells, as an alternative treatment for the degenerative TMJ disc as a part of TMJ disorders. Materials and methods: With only a few research studies reported till date, this review also proposes the mechanis

Biomechanical and biochemical outcomes of porcine temporomandibular joint disc deformation.

OBJECTIVE: The structure-function relationship in the healthy temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disc has been well established, however the changes in dysfunctional joints has yet to be systematically evaluated. Due to the poor understanding of the etiology of temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) this study evaluated naturally occurring degenerative remodeling in aged female porcine temporomandibular joint (TMJ) discs in order to gain insight into the progression and effects on possible treatment strategies of TMDs. DESIGN: Surface and regional biomechanical and biochemical properties of discal tis

Impact of craniofacial skeletal characteristics on temporomandibular joint's articular disc position in temporomandibular disorders.

This retrospective study aims to: (1) determine whether craniofacial skeletal characteristics differ based on the type of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disc displacement (DD); and (2) identify cephalometric variables that correlate with and predict articular disc position. A total of 294 joints corresponding to 147 female patients, aged 18 to 41 years, were included. Based on the criteria of DC/TMD and subsequently magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings, the joints were categorized into three groups: 1) bilateral normal disc position (BN), 2) disc displacement with reduction (DDR), and 3) d

The temporomandibular joint disc: A complex fable about an elusive butterfly.

INTRODUCTION: Discussions related to the diagnosis and management of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders (TMDs) have always been interesting, and at times controversial, since they involve combinations of dental, medical, and surgical etiological theories and management strategies. Amongst the various recommendations that emerged over the years was that any dental and surgical procedures that are primarily focused on mandible repositioning and irreversible changes to dental occlusion should be avoided. This statement has important implications for appraising the validity of physiopathology

Synovial tissue cytokine profile in disc displacement of the temporomandibular joint.

BACKGROUND: Symptomatic disc displacement (DD) of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) may cause pain and limited mouth opening. The aetiopathogenesis is obscure and probably complex, which makes the diagnostic classification crude and mainly based on clinical criteria rather than disease mechanisms, and tissue characteristics. OBJECTIVES: The study aim was to characterise and quantify synovial tissue in DD, where specific cytokine patterns might serve as potential biomarkers. METHODS: An observational cohort study was performed harvesting synovial tissue from 63 patients: 44 with DD without re

Serum cortisol level and disc displacement disorders of the temporomandibular joint.

UNLABELLED: Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are a significant public health problem, affecting approximately 5-12% of the population. OBJECTIVES: This retrospective cross-sectional study investigated the relationship between 8 AM serum cortisol levels (8ASC) and disc displacement disorders (DDD) of TMD. One hundred and forty patients with DDD were recruited. Among them, 60 patients comprised the case group of disc displacement without reduction with limited opening (DDWORWLO, age 37·7 ± 17·22), and 80 were 'other DDD' for the control group (age 36·4 ± 13·08). The independent variables inclu

Temporomandibular joint disc disfigurement and abnormal thickening of the posterior band.

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disc disfigurement is a common finding associated with various stages of disc displacement and injury. However, in most cases, the clinical diagnosis of disc displacement without reduction may not be readily apparent due to either a delay in patient presentation or lack of early imaging of the disc. The case of a 22-year-old woman with a history of TMJ disorder, seeking treatment for a history of unilateral posterior open bite and bilateral jaw pain, is described.

Structure and function of the temporomandibular joint disc: implications for tissue engineering.

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disc is a little understood structure that, unfortunately, exhibits a plethora of pathologic disorders. Tissue engineering approaches may be warranted to address TMJ disc pathophysiology, but first a clear understanding of structure-function relationships needs to be developed, especially as they relate to the regenerative potential of the tissue. In this review, we correlate the biochemical content of the TMJ disc to its mechanical behavior and discuss what this correlation infers for tissue engineering studies of the TMJ disc. The disc of the TMJ exhibits a

Osteoarthritis of the temporomandibular joint organ and its relationship to disc displacement.

To overcome disagreements with regard to the relationship between disc displacement and osteoarthritis of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), the evidence for suggested disease mechanisms and clinical course of these disorders is reviewed. The TMJ behaves as a complex organ in which biochemical and biomechanical processes regulate the physiology of cartilage, bone, synovium, ligaments, and synovial fluid. In this concept, TMJ osteoarthritis is an organ failure involving all its structures. The development of as well as recovery from disease appears to be intimately related to exceeding and supp
