BACKGROUND: Test anxiety is a situation-specific construct that can markedly impair cognitive functioning and academic performance in high-stakes educational environments. Medical students are frequently exposed to evaluative situations, and test anxiety is common in this population; however, reported prevalence estimates vary widely due to methodological inconsistencies across studies. Therefore, we aimed to estimate the pooled prevalence of test anxiety among medical students.
METHODS: We searched PubMed, Scopus, Embase, and Web of Science in March 2026, supplemented by backward and forward

AIM: This study aimed to examine the level of test anxiety among nursing students in Saudi Arabia and to identify the coping strategies they use when facing pre-exam anxiety and uncertainty.
METHODS: A cross-sectional design was employed. Participants were recruited using convenience sampling. Data were collected from nursing students enrolled in regular and bridging programmes at a Saudi nursing college using a self-administered questionnaire. Test anxiety was assessed using the Westside Test Anxiety Scale (WTAS), and coping strategies were measured using the Coping with Pre-Exam Anxiety and

BACKGROUND: Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) is a common and disabling psychiatric disorder that negatively impairs patients' quality of life. Studies suggest that inadequate consideration of interpersonal problems may contribute to the poor treatment response in psychotherapy for GAD. Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT) is an evidence-based psychosocial intervention that focuses on symptoms by improving interpersonal functioning, and research demonstrates that IPT is efficacious in treating social anxiety and panic disorders. To date, however, there are no studies examining IPT for patients w

Test anxiety comprises cognitive, physiological, and behavioral reactions due to anxiety about failure or a lower academic performance score on an exam or evaluation. This study examined the effect of self-hypnosis on reducing test anxiety among upper secondary school students using a quantitative methodology with a pre-experimental design. The prevalence of test anxiety was measured using the Friedben Test Anxiety Scale (FTAS) and students' demographic data were collected. Twenty-two 16-year-old students with moderate to high test anxiety were selected for a self-hypnosis intervention over a

This study assessed the sensitivity of four anxiety-like behaviour paradigms in zebrafish: the novel tank dive test, shoaling test, light/dark test, and the less common shoal with novel object test. A second goal was to measure the extent to which the main effect measures are related to locomotor behaviours to determine whether swimming velocity and freezing (immobility) are indicative of anxiety-like behaviour. Using the well-established anxiolytic, chlordiazepoxide, we found the novel tank dive to be most sensitive followed by the shoaling test. The light/dark test and shoaling plus novel ob

The elevated plus maze is a prominent and well-documented test for studying anxiety in rodents. Fish are becoming more prevalent in studies of anxiety, yet the elevated plus maze has not been adapted and validated for fish. In the present study, we created an aquatic version of the elevated plus maze called the 'submerged plus maze,' which is shaped like a plus symbol with four arms alternating between black and transparent walls. We used convict cichlid fish (Amatitlania nigrofasciata) and administered diazepam to validate the apparatus for studying anxiety-like behaviour. After diazepam expo

The Mouse Defense Test Battery was developed from tests of defensive behaviors in rats, reflecting earlier studies of both acute and chronic responses of laboratory and wild rodents to threatening stimuli and situations. It measures flight, freezing, defensive threat and attack, and risk assessment in response to an unconditioned predator stimulus, as well as pretest activity and postthreat (conditioned) defensiveness to the test context. Factor analyses of these indicate four factors relating to cognitive and emotional aspects of defense, flight, and defensiveness to the test context. In the

This study examined the psychometric properties of the Test Anxiety Coping Skills (TACS) measure, a new self-report scale developed to assess strategies employed by school-age students to cope with test anxiety. TACS proposed a three-factor structure of test anxiety coping skills that correspond to the three major treatment methods identified across previous studies as important components of test anxiety intervention programs: cognitive strategies, behavioral strategies, and study and test-taking skills. The study was conducted among a sample of 228 secondary school students (Grades 8 and 9)

Glucocorticoids (GCs) are used to treat numerous diseases, but their use in limited by adverse side effects. One such effect is occasional increased anxiety. Since the intensity of hepatic microsomal oxidation has been shown to alter responses to GC, we examined the possibility that rats with lower rates of hepatic GC metabolism would have increased anxiety. We hypothesized that the resulting, excessive GC would stimulate brain monoamine oxidase A (MAO-A), which would reduce brain serotonin, and thereby increase anxiety. Hepatic microsomal oxidative intensity was evaluated by the hexobarbital

PURPOSE: To evaluate the reproducibility of neural activations induced by an anticipatory anxiety provocation challenge in healthy volunteers.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fourteen healthy male volunteers participated in two separate functional MRI (fMRI) sessions in which they underwent a paradigm based on anticipation of aversive transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulations. This paradigm consisted of alternating presentation of red circles associated with the likelihood that aversive stimuli may be given and blue circles during which the subjects knew that no shock could be given. Anxiety state

The current study evaluated a novel latent structural model of anxiety sensitivity (AS) in relation to panic vulnerability among a sample of young adults (N=216). AS was measured using the 16-item Anxiety Sensitivity Index (ASI; Reiss, Peterson, Gursky, & McNally, 1986), and panic vulnerability was indexed by panic attack responding to a single administration of a 4-minute, 10% CO(2) challenge. As predicted, vulnerability for panic attack responding to biological challenge was associated with dichotomous individual differences between taxonic AS classes and continuous within-taxon class indivi

The behavior of isolation-reared mice has not yet been studied in the staircase test. The present study examined the effects of anxiolytic or anxiogenic agents and isolation rearing on the behavior of ddY (outbred) strain mice in the staircase test. Diazepam and phenobarbital increased the number of steps climbed, but did not affect rearing behavior in group-reared mice. FG-7142, a benzodiazepine inverse agonist, significantly increased the number of rearing with no changes in the number of steps climbed in group-reared mice. Methamphetamine increased the number of steps climbed and decreased

Background: While patch testing remains the gold standard for diagnosis of allergic contact dermatitis (ACD), the reliability and reproducibility of patch testing results have been questioned in the literature. Various exogenous and endogenous factors have been explored as sources of discordance, but the effect of anxiety on patch testing results has not yet been studied. Anxiety is known to be associated with systemic inflammation and has been shown to increase the incidence of positive reactions in skin prick testing. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the impact of anxiety on patch t

The objective of our survey was to evaluate the anxiety experienced by women receiving abnormal results of prenatal Down syndrome screening by an electronic anonymous survey. Anxiety level was evaluated by a six-item Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety Inventory. Of 559 respondents, high anxiety scores were reported in the majority (86.0%). Higher anxiety scores were noted in women informed of the abnormal result by the caregiver vs. written answer. 59.1% of the respondents preferred the risk reported as percentage, while only 4.4% gave precedence to the current form (e.g. 1 in 100). The participa

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic may cause psychological distress in the general population and has the potential to cause anxiety regarding COVID-19. No validated questionnaires exist for the measurement of specific COVID-19 anxiety. We modified the DSM 5 - Severity Measure for Specific Phobia-Adult scale specifically for anxiety regarding COVID-19, and report the psychometric properties from an online study with 6262 participants from the general population in Germany. We analysed internal consistency as well as concordant validity. The scale showed good internal consistency

Parents who are not overly protective and who encourage children to take on challenging experiences may help children develop an enhanced sense of control, thereby reducing the risk for subsequent anxiety. We developed the Parental Facilitation of Mastery Scale (PFMS) to assess parenting behaviors that may promote mastery experiences in childhood. Undergraduates and their biological siblings were recruited to complete the PFMS as well as other measures of parenting behaviors, perceived control, and anxiety. A factor analysis of the PFMS revealed two components representing parental overprotect

The effects of angelica essential oil in three assays predictive of anxiolytic activity in male mice were studied, with diazepam as a positive anxiolytic control. In the elevated plus-maze test, compared to the positive control diazepam, angelica essential oil (30.0 mg/kg, PO) had a modest anxiolytic-like effect (increased the percentage of open-arm time and reduced the percent protected head dips). In the light/dark test, angelica essential oil (30.0 mg/kg) prolonged the time spent in the light area without altering the locomotor activity of the animals. In the stress-induced hyperthermia tes

There is a dearth of publicly available standardized and normed reading anxiety tests (RATs) with known psychometric properties. In this study, we collected self-report data (n = 416), parent-report data (n = 455), or both (n = 184), for primary (n = 498) and secondary students (n = 473) for four RATs plus the Revised Child Anxiety and Depression Scale-25 (RCADS-25) and the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ). Analyses revealed that 21 items for each RAT loaded on three factors (generalized, social, and physiological reading anxiety), which had good internal consistency (.85 to .98)
