With the growing interest in using insects as a sustainable protein source for human and animal consumption, identifying suitable feedstuffs is crucial for their rearing. Although Tenebrio molitor larvae can valorise food industry byproducts, the presence of certain compounds may limit this potential. This study assesses the impact of theobromine, a methylxanthine found in chocolate, on the growth and mortality of Tenebrio molitor larvae. The aim was to evaluate the feasibility of rearing mealworms on byproducts and former foodstuffs from the biscuit, confectionery and chocolate industries. La

Assessment of the flavanol composition of 41 commercial chocolates was by HPLC-DAD. Among individual flavonols ranged from 0.095 to 3.264mgg(-1), epicatechin was the predominant flavanol accounting for 32.9%. Contrary to catechin, epicatechin was a reliable predictive value of the polyphenol content. Conversely the percentage of theobromine used as a proxy measure for nonfat cocoa solids (NFCS) was not a good predictor of epicatechin or flavanol content. In a further chiral analysis, the naturally occurring forms of cocoa flavanols, (-)-epicatechin and (+)-catechin, was determined joint the oc

We have studied the purine alkaloid content and purine metabolism in Theobroma cacao fruits at differing growth stages: Stage A (young small fruit, fresh weight, ca. 2 g); stage B (medium size fruit, fresh weight, ca. 100 g) and stage C (large size, fresh weight, ca. 500 g). The major purine alkaloid in stage A fruits (mainly pericarp) was theobromine (0.7 micromol g(-1) fresh weight), followed by caffeine (0.09 micromol g(-1) fresh weight). The theobromine content of the pericarp decreased sharply with tissue age, and the caffeine content decreased gradually. A large amount of theobromine (22

Theobromine disposition was measured twice in 12 normal men, once after 14 days of abstention from all methylxanthines and once after 1 week of theobromine (6 mg/kg/day) in the form of dark chocolate. Mean theobromine t 1/2, apparent volume of distribution, and clearance after abstinence from all methylxanthines were 10.0 hours, 0.76 L/kg, and 0.88 ml/min/kg. High daily doses of chocolate for 1 week did not change these values. After subjects abstained from methylxanthines, urinary radioactivity over 72 hours after a single, oral dose of [8-14C]theobromine consisted of 42% 7-methylxanthine, 20

The plasma kinetics of po administered theobromine (TBR) were determined in timed-pregnant (P) and nonpregnant (NP) Sprague-Dawley rats at doses of 5, 10, 50, and 100 mg/kg using TBR sodium acetate with 10 microCi [8-14C]TBR as a radioactive tracer. Since plasma radioactivity consisted of greater than 99% TBR and less than 1% metabolites as shown by high-performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) methods, liquid scintillation counting was used to quantify plasma TBR. No dose-dependent kinetics were observed in mean TBR plasma half-life, volume of distribution, systemic clearance, area under the

Theobromine is an abundant methylxanthine in cocoa/chocolate. A recent article in BMC Psychiatry concludes that theobromine consumption increases the risk of depression. In our opinion, it is difficult to make a correlation between dietary habits and the risk of depression, the diagnosis of which is not simple to make. Also, it is not easy to assess the amount of theobromine because it varies from one brand of chocolate to another and/or depending on the percentage of cocoa it has. Assuming that there is a correlation, we postulate that the conclusion may be the opposite, that is, that depress

Methylxanthines, such as theobromine and caffeine, are alkaloids produced in a variety of widely consumed plant species including tea, coffee, yerba mate, and chocolate. While these compounds are favored by humans for their stimulating properties, plants are thought to produce them primarily for defense purposes. Cacao (Theobroma cacao; the chocolate tree), the source of edible cocoa and chocolate products, is an important crop in the tropics that suffers considerable yield losses due to diseases. Here, we report that a disease-tolerant cacao genotype predominantly accumulates caffeine in youn

Theobromine is a significant purine alkaloid found in tea plants, known for its various bioactive functions in humans. While the metabolic pathway for purine alkaloids, particularly involving the methyltransferase CsTCS1, has been largely understood, information regarding the upstream regulatory network of theobromine remains limited. In this study, we collected transcriptome data from tea plants exhibiting different levels of purine alkaloids and applied weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) to identify the upstream regulatory network modules associated with each purine alkaloi

BACKGROUND: Theobromine intake usually comes from coffee, tea, and cocoa foods. Related studies have shown that theobromine is a bioactive molecule with anti-inflammatory, antithrombotic, anti-fat, and other effects. Periodontitis is a kind of oral inflammatory disease with high incidence, which is characterized by alveolar bone resorption leading to tooth loosening and loss. Therefore, this study aims to investigate whether theobromine intake correlates with periodontitis and whether it is a risk or protective factor for periodontitis. It hopes to provide a basis for theobromine-related diet

Caffeine and theobromine were identified and quantified in leaf epicuticular waxes of Ilex paraguariensis A. St.-Hil. (Aquifoliaceae). The total epicuticular leaf wax content was ca. 0.5% on average of dry leaf weight. Epicuticular caffeine and theobromine contents varied from 0.16 to 127.6 microg/mg and from 0 to 9.5 microg/mg of wax, respectively. For some selected samples, the intracellular methylxanthine concentration was also determined. A positive correlation was found between inner and epicuticular caffeine contents.

The societal consensus on the need for smoking cessation is well-established, yet the number of tobacco users continues to rise. This trend is largely driven by the potent physiological effects of nicotine, which significantly increase the likelihood of tobacco use initiation. Certain compounds found in everyday foods, such as theobromine and caffeine in cocoa products, also exhibit psychostimulatory properties. However, comprehensive studies on the effects of consuming these compounds in the context of tobacco use are limited. This study investigates the role of theobromine, a primary active

The incidence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) tends to be younger. And the role of theobromine in fatty liver disease remains unclear. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between dietary theobromine intake and degree of hepatic steatosis in individuals aged 45 and below, using data from the 2017-2020 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) and liver ultrasonography transient elastography. A total of 1796 participants aged below 45 years were included from NHANES 2017-2020 data after applying exclusion criteria. Multivariate regression an

Natural products have been studied to reveal new therapies against human dysfunctions since they present several medicinal properties. Caffeine, theobromine and (+)-catechin are remarkable natural agents in the class of methylxanthines and flavonoids. These bioactive molecules have several biological activities, for instance, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antitumor capacity. In this sense, studies focusing on these molecules have been performed to discover new treatments against diseases, such as cancer. Cancer is a serious public health problem worldwide responsible for more than 70% of

This review provides a brief overview of known information on the human toxicity of theobromine and paraxanthine. Theobromine has some pharmacological effects, although these activities are considerably weaker than those of theophylline and/or caffeine, described in parts 1 and 2 of this series (Stavric, Fd Chem. Toxic. 1988, 26, 541 & 645). Paraxanthine, which is not found in plants or foods, is the major metabolite of caffeine in humans, in whom its toxicological potency appears to be very low. This paper gives a brief retrospective view of possible toxicological effects when methylxanthines

Theophylline and caffeine undergo N-demethylation and hydroxylation by Fenton's reagent to give uric acid derivatives; theophylline is oxidized mainly to 1-methyluric acid, and 1,3-dimethyluric acid and 1-methyluric acid are the major products obtained from caffeine. Theobromine undergoes predominantly N-demethylation to give 7-methylxanthine. The nature of the products indicate that these reactions simulate hepatic drug metabolism.

Twenty-four samples of cord blood chosen at random from premature newborns were analyzed for methylxanthines. At least one methylxanthine could be detected in 20 (83%) samples, and caffeine was present in 17 (71%). In 8 (33%) samples the serum concentration was above 15 mumol/l; above this level an effect on ventilation has been demonstrated. Of 50 samples of human milk, 48 (96%) contained at least one methylxanthine, and in 42 (84%) caffeine could be detected. In treating premature infants with caffeine or theophylline during the first days of life a possible prenatal supply has to be taken i

Transient global cerebral ischemia (tGCI) is a cerebrovascular disorder characterized by a brief decline in blood flow, neurological deficits, and is often predictive of stroke. Theobromine (TBR) is consumed worldwide in chocolates, tea, and cocoa products. TBR is a natural stimulant and vasoactive alkaloid that may protect against ischemic injury. In this study, neuroprotective potential of theobromine (TBR) was evaluated in 2-vessel occlusion transient global cerebral ischemia-reperfusion (tGCI/R) rat model. Rats were treated with TBR (50, 100 mg/kg, p.o.) for 7 successive days, and subjecte

BACKGROUND: Methylxanthines, including caffeine, theobromine and theophylline, are natural and synthetic compounds in tea, which could be metabolized by certain kinds of bacteria and fungi. Previous studies confirmed that several microbial isolates from Pu-erh tea could degrade and convert caffeine and theophylline. We speculated that these candidate isolates also could degrade and convert theobromine through N-demethylation and oxidation. In this study, seven tea-derived fungal strains were inoculated into various theobromine agar medias and theobromine liquid mediums to assess their capacity
