Dog tick-borne diseases in Sicily.

In Sicily many tick borne diseases are endemic, in particular way those that see like main carrier ticks that prefer, for their vital cycle, climatic conditions characterized by high temperatures and a warmth-humid atmosphere. The more important pathologies transmitted by ticks causing diseases in dogs are babesiosis and ehrlichiosis. Borrelia burgdorferi, Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Rickettsia conorii, Coxiella burnetii and tick transmitted encephalitis virus assume particular relevance because they are agents of zoonosis. Our centre, C.R.A.Ba.R.T, have conducted many researches and carried ou

Tick-Borne Diseases in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Tick-borne diseases are an important cause of human morbidity and mortality in the United States. The past several decades have witnessed an increase in both the number of recognized tick-borne pathogens and the number of tick-borne disease cases, whereas tick surveys have revealed substantial geographic expansions of tick populations throughout the country. Multiple laboratory testing options exist for diagnosis of tick-borne diseases, including serology, microscopy, and molecular-based methods. The preferred approach varies by the specific disease, locally available test options,

Distribution of tick-borne diseases in China.

As an important contributor to vector-borne diseases in China, in recent years, tick-borne diseases have attracted much attention because of their increasing incidence and consequent significant harm to livestock and human health. The most commonly observed human tick-borne diseases in China include Lyme borreliosis (known as Lyme disease in China), tick-borne encephalitis (known as Forest encephalitis in China), Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (known as Xinjiang hemorrhagic fever in China), Q-fever, tularemia and North-Asia tick-borne spotted fever. In recent years, some emerging tick-borne d

Tick-borne diseases in Minnesota: an update.

Tick-borne diseases endemic to Minnesota include Lyme disease, babesiosis, anaplasmosis/ehrlichiosis, Powassan virus illness and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. Physicians need to be aware of these diseases and be vigilant about testing for them when patients present with acute febrile illness or rash within one month of potential tick exposure. In addition, they need to educate patients about these diseases and encourage prevention measures, especially use of tick repellents. This article reviews the epidemiology of these illnesses in Minnesota and the current recommendations for diagnosis and

Predicting the risk of tick-borne diseases.

This brief review focuses on the value of predictive risk mapping and the question of how to test predictions of the spatial and temporal variation in risk of tick-borne diseases, specifically as caused by tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEv). Predictions of the present distribution of TBEv, driven by satellite data, match the mapped records of TBE cases with 90% accuracy in the Baltic region and 81% accuracy in central Europe. Many of the apparently false predictions of TBE presence coincide with recent records of new or reactivated foci, and highlight regions for active surveillance. Predict

[Recent information on tick-borne diseases (I)].

Tick-borne encephalitis (central European encephalitis) and Lyme disease (erythema chronicum migrans) are diseases mainly transmitted by ticks of the Ixodes ricinus species. The tick-borne encephalitis, a virus infection, can produce severe encephalitic symptoms. There is no specific treatment but the infection can be prevented by active or passive immunization. Lyme disease is caused by a spirochete (Borrelia burgdorferi). Due to the variety of often uncharacteristic symptoms this infection is not easily recognized. However, early diagnosis and antibiotic treatment are necessary to prevent ch

The presence of tick-borne encephalitis in an endemic area for tick-borne diseases, Turkey.

The aim of this study was to indicate the presence of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) in an endemic area for Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF) in Turkey. Of 39 CCHF suspected cases, one was found to be TBE virus immunoglobulin M positive and seven were TBE virus immunoglobulin G positive. It is important to report this first appearance of the TBE virus in Turkey since 1967.

[Epidemiology of tick-borne diseases in Poland].

The paper summarizes state of art knowledge on tick-borne diseases epidemiology in Poland. The most prevalent diseases are Lyme borreliosis (LB) and tick-borne encephalitis (TBE). Although there is growing number of data published on anaplasmosis and babesiosis prevalence in ticks and humans, there is no national data on these diseases and their epidemiological features remain unclear. All tick-borne agents have a common vector tick--the sheep tick Ixodes ricinus. LB and TBE are mandatory reportable diseases. In 2005 case definitions were implemented in Poland to allow a better comparability o

[Chronic fatigue syndrome following tick-borne diseases].

The chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is characterized by a feeling of tiredness persisting for over 6 months, associated with a number of other symptoms including headaches, myalgia and arthralgia, memory and concentration impairment. Its cause is unknown, there are neither objective diagnostic methods, nor causal treatment of the condition. In view of hypotheses suggesting a relationship between CFS and infections, 86 patients with a history of borreliosis or tick-borne encephalitis were examined. In 50% of these cases CFS could be identified. This clinical pattern was found in as many as 71% o

Active immunisation against human tick-borne diseases.

With the development and licensure of a recombinant vaccine for the tick-borne infection Lyme disease, more attention has been paid to other vaccines that have been used or are being developed for the prevention of other tick-borne infections. This review highlights vaccine information for Lyme borreliosis, tick-borne encephalitis (TBE), Rocky Mountain spotted fever, tularaemia, Query (Q) fever, Kyasanur Forest disease (KFD) and tick paralysis. Additionally, discussion on the use of immunisation against the tick itself is included which not only can decrease veterinary tick burdens but may als

Ticks and tick-borne diseases in Oklahoma.

Tick-borne diseases are common in Oklahoma, especially the eastern part of the state where tick prevalence is highest. Three species of hard ticks are present in Oklahoma that are known vectors of human disease--the American dog tick (Rocky Mountain spotted fever; RMSF), the lone star tick (ehrlichiosis) and the black-legged tick (Lyme disease). Oklahoma consistently ranks among the top states in numbers of reported RMSF cases, and Ehrlichiosis may be as prevalent as RMSF. Although Lyme disease is frequently reported in Oklahoma, over-diagnosing of this disease due to false-positive test resul

The Tick Project: Testing Environmental Methods of Preventing Tick-borne Diseases.

Prevention of tick-borne diseases in humans is challenging. To date, no prevention strategies have been shown to be consistently effective. Here, we describe the design of a new large-scale study, involving hundreds of households in Dutchess County, New York, testing whether environmental interventions, applied intensively and over 4 years, can prevent human cases.

Tick-Borne Infectious Diseases in China, 2003-2023.

Tick-borne diseases (TBDs) pose a substantial threat to global public health, including China. This article systematically reviews the epidemiology of TBDs in Chinese mainland between 2003 and 2023. We retrieved and analyzed the incidence and distribution of notable bacterial, viral, and parasitic TBDs in China, and discussed their clinical characteristics, diagnostic approaches, and vectors. Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome is the leading TBD in China, with cases rapidly increasing since its first report in 2009, and a high case fatality rate of 5%-33% in patients with severe disea
