Dental erosion, the chemical dissolution of the tooth surface structures, is an increasing problem in the modern world due to growing trends toward acidic food consumption and can cause permanent dental hard tissue loss. A detailed understanding of the reactivity of dental surfaces to chemicals invading the oral cavity is necessary to devise effective countermeasures. We introduce the use of converged roughness parameters Sqconv, i.e., roughness parameters calculated at a reduced field of view, to reflect the critical surface building blocks controlling the reactivity, as measured by white lig

Dental caries is a microbially mediated disease that can result in significant tooth structure degradation. Although the preponderance of lesions is treated by surgical intervention, various strategies have been developed for its noninvasive management. Here, we use a novel approach for noninvasive treatment based on killing Streptococcus mutans with high-frequency microwave energy (ME). The rationale for this approach is based on modulating the pH of caries to a physiological state to enable spontaneous tooth remineralization from exogenous sources. In the present study, after demonstrating t

The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effectiveness of highly concentrated fluoride products and remineralizing products (F-APC) in preventing erosive dental lesions in competitive swimming patients. A total of 48 teeth were extracted, preserved in saline solution and divided into three groups. In G1 (control group), each tooth was half-immersed in chlorinated pool water; in G2 (fluoride-treated group), after being totally immersed in chlorinated water, each tooth had half of its surface treated with a highly concentrated fluoride product once a week; in G3 (remineralization produ

Introduction. Oral bacteria, such as Rothia dentocariosa (Rd), can modulate external aqueous phase orthophosphate (Pi) concentrations via Pi internalization and accumulate high amounts of Pi in the form of polyphosphate (polyP).Hypothesis/Gap Statement. This study investigates whether the carbohydrate metabolism of Rd that generates acid and solubilizes Pi, derived from phosphorus-32 (32P)-labelled tooth enamel, can be internalized and incorporated into intracellular polyP. The study investigated the hypothesis that the internalization of tooth-derived Pi and polyP synthesis could be attenuate

Caries begin with an imbalance between demineralization and remineralization due to the continuous acid production by cariogenic bacteria. However, the development of dental materials that could prevent and treat caries via a simple and efficient mechanism has always been a challenge. To address this issue, therapeutic nanoparticles composed of a dendritic polyglutamic acid (DPGlu) and chelerythrine (CHE) complex (DPGlu@CHE) were developed via hydrophobic interactions and hydrogen bonds. DPGlu@CHE could be adsorbed onto the tooth surface, releasing CHE rapidly under acidic conditions to remove

The demineralization process conditions the structure of the enamel and begins with a superficial decalcification procedure that makes the enamel surface porous and gives it a chalky appearance. White spot lesions (WSLs) are the first clinical sign that can be appreciated before caries evolves into cavitated lesions. The years of research have led to the testing of several remineralization techniques. This study's objective is to investigate and assess the various methods for remineralizing enamel. The dental enamel remineralization techniques have been evaluated. A literature search on PubMed

The main features of early caries are the massive colonization of cariogenic bacteria and demineralization of tooth enamel by the acids that they produce. Owing to the lack of effective treatments, the development of anticaries therapeutics with both antimicrobial and remineralizing properties is urgently required. Black phosphorus nanosheets (BPNs) are ideal therapeutics for the treatment of early caries because they can mediate photothermal antibacterial activity and subsequently promote remineralization by generating PO4 3-. However, the dynamic and wet environment of the oral cavity preven

BACKGROUND: Dental caries is a widespread non-communicable disease caused by interactions among acidogenic bacteria, fermentable carbohydrates, and host factors, leading to tooth demineralization. In dentin caries, this process exposes dentinal tubules, causing sensitivity and structural degradation. Despite available agents, effective dentin remineralization remains a challenge. Recent studies highlight samarium-doped hydroxyapatite (Sm-HAp) as a potential biomaterial for promoting remineralization.
AIM: To synthesize and characterize the samarium doped hydroxyapatite (Sm-HAp) as a potential

In fixed orthodontic treatment, brackets are orthodontic attachments bonded to the tooth enamel, and their placement and removal may affect the underlying enamel surface. Enamel degradation is a critical factor for oral health, as it reduces the mechanical strength of teeth and increases susceptibility to caries and erosion. Accurate diagnosis of enamel changes is therefore essential for the evaluation of preventive and restorative treatments. In this study, enamel degradation was investigated via two integrated methods: energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and surface roughness measurem

Smart dental materials are designed to intelligently respond to physiological changes and local environmental stimuli to protect the teeth and promote oral health. Dental plaque, or biofilms, can substantially reduce the local pH, causing demineralization that can then progress to tooth caries. Progress has been made recently in developing smart dental materials that possess antibacterial and remineralizing capabilities in response to local oral pH in order to suppress caries, promote mineralization, and protect tooth structures. This article reviews cutting-edge research on smart dental mater

Early dental caries and tooth staining are prevalent clinical conditions, so it is of great clinical significance to develop a multifunctional material. Photocatalytic therapies play a significant role in the medical field. However, the use of photocatalytic materials in the dental field is relatively limited. In this study, multifunctional titanium dioxide/nanohydroxyapatite (TiO2/HAP) nanocomposites were synthesised using a hydrothermal method and investigated for their antibacterial properties, mineralization-promoting effects, tooth whitening capabilities, and biocompatibility. TiO2 serves

Secondary caries is one of the leading causes of resin-based dental restoration failure. It is initiated at the interface of an existing restoration and the restored tooth surface. It is mainly caused by an imbalance between two processes of mineral loss (demineralization) and mineral gain (remineralization). A plethora of evidence has explored incorporating several bioactive compounds into resin-based materials to prevent bacterial biofilm attachment and the onset of the disease. In this review, the most recent advances in the design of remineralizing compounds and their functionalization to

Dental caries is a dynamic disease induced by the unbalance between demineralization of dental hard tissues caused by biofilm and remineralization of them; however, although various effective remineralization methods have been well documented, it is a challenge to reestablish the balance by enhancing remineralization alone while ignoring the antibacterial therapy. Therefore, the integration of remineralizing and antibacterial technologies offers a promising strategy to halt natural caries progression in clinical practice. Here, the conception of interrupting dental caries (IDC) was proposed ba

Inorganic materials are easily cracked due to their brittle nature, and the repair of these cracks, especially microsized cracks, by inherent inorganic components is a long-term challenge. In addition to dental caries and periodontal disease, tooth cracks and structural fractures are increasingly considered important factors leading to tooth loss in clinical practice. Herein, we propose a calcium phosphate oligomer (CPO) glue by systematically elucidating its mass transport behavior in microcracks, realizing the repair of tooth cracks with an improvement of mechanical properties. We discovered
