Fluidic torque-enabled object manipulation by microrobot collectives.

Microscale systems experience strong viscous interactions because of the low-Reynolds-number regime in which they exist. This means that fluidic manipulation and actuation of passive objects can be enabled and influenced by the individual spin rate of microscale robots, the number of microrobots, and their positions relative to the objects. We explore these parameter spaces and find that the fluidic torque generated by a magnetic microrobot collective can be exploited to apply bidirectional torque to concentric ring structures and demonstrate this through physical experiments and numerical sim

Spin-torque skyrmion resonance in a frustrated magnet.

The frustrated Fe3Sn2 magnet is technologically attractive due to its extreme-temperature skyrmion stability, large topological Hall effect, and current-induced helicity switching attributed to a self-induced spin-torque. Here, we present a current-driven skyrmion resonance technique excited by self-induced spin-torque in Fe3Sn2. The dynamics are probed optically in a time-resolved measurement enabling us to distinguish between the excited modes. We find that only the breathing and rotational counterclockwise modes are excited, rather than the three modes typically observed in Dzyaloshinskii-M

Switching of Perpendicular Magnetization by Spin-Orbit Torque.

Magnetic materials with strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy are of great interest for the development of nonvolatile magnetic memory and computing technologies due to their high stabilities at the nanoscale. However, electrical switching of such perpendicular magnetization in an energy-efficient, deterministic, scalable manner has remained a big challenge. This problem has recently attracted enormous efforts in the field of spintronics. Here, recent advances and challenges in the understanding of the electrical generation of spin currents, the switching mechanisms and the switching strate

Spin-orbit torque flash analog-to-digital converter.

Although analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) are critical components in mixed-signal integrated circuits (IC), their performance has not been improved significantly over the last decade. To achieve a radical improvement (compact, low power and reliable ADCs), spintronics can be considered as a proper candidate due to its compatibility with CMOS and wide applications in storage, neuromorphic computing, and so on. In this paper, a proof-of-concept of a 3-bit spin-CMOS Flash ADC using in-plane-anisotropy magnetic tunnel junctions (i-MTJs) with spin-orbit torque (SOT) switching mechanism is design

Atypical brain torque in boys with developmental stuttering.

The counterclockwise brain torque, defined as a larger right prefrontal and left parietal-occipital lobe, is a consistent brain asymmetry. Reduced or reversed lobar asymmetries are markers of atypical cerebral laterality and have been found in adults who stutter. It was hypothesized that atypical brain torque would be more common in children who stutter. Magnetic resonance imaging-based morphology measures were completed in boys who stutter (n = 14) and controls (n = 14), ages 8-13. The controls had the expected brain torque configurations whereas the boys who stutter were atypical. These resu

Torque Generation of the Endodontic Instruments: A Narrative Review.

As the use of nickel-titanium (NiTi) file systems for root canal therapy has become popular; hence, knowledge and understanding of the characteristics of NiTi files is essential for dentists. Unintended sudden fracture can occur during root canal shaping, and it is important to understand the conditions that may cause instrument fractures. Torque is defined as the force required to rotate the NiTi file and can be considered of as a parameter for the stress generated. The endodontic engine maintains a constant rotational speed by adjusting torque regardless of the root canal conditions. The pro

Negative optical torque on a microsphere in optical tweezers.

We show that the optical force field in optical tweezers with elliptically polarized beams has the opposite handedness for a wide range of particle sizes and for the most common configurations. Our method is based on the direct observation of the particle equilibrium position under the effect of a transverse Stokes drag force, and its rotation around the optical axis by the mechanical effect of the optical torque. We find overall agreement with theory, with no fitting, provided that astigmatism, which is characterized separately, is included in the theoretical description. Our work opens the w

The effect of knee joint angle on torque control.

The purpose of the author's investigation was to examine the effect of knee joint angle on torque control of the quadriceps muscle group. In all, 12 healthy adults produced maximal voluntary contractions and submaximal torque (15, 30, and 45% MVC [maximal voluntary contraction]) at leg flexion angles of 15 degrees , 30 degrees , 60 degrees , and 90 degrees below the horizontal plane. As expected, MVC values changed with respect to joint angle with maximum torque output being greatest at 60 degrees and least at 15 degrees . During the submaximal tasks, participants appropriately scaled their to

An examination of motor unit firing rates during steady torque of maximal efforts with either an explosive or slower rate of torque development.

NEW FINDINGS: What is the central question of this study? The aim was to explore agonist and antagonist motor unit firing rates during maximal efforts performed with either an explosive or a slower rate of torque development. What is the main finding and its importance? The antagonist muscle presented a motor unit firing rate relationship similar to the agonist muscle. Additionally, the motor units of both muscles exhibited higher firing rates during explosive maximal contractions than during maximal contractions performed at a slower rate of torque development. These results could prove usefu

Examining isokinetic knee peak torque and time to peak torque as predictors of vertical jump height in division I men's basketball players.

The vertical jump (VJ) is one of the most important movements for basketball athletes and therefore determining modifiable predictors of the VJ would aid substantially in crafting more effective training regimens. The purpose of this study was to determine if isokinetic quadriceps strength and torque predict VJ height and which characteristics and testing speed is the strongest predictor of VJ height. Fifteen subjects (age: 18.5 ± 1.0 years, height: 195.9 ± 6.9 cm, weight: 96.2 ± 13.7 kg) from a single Division I men's basketball team were recruited for this study. All participants performed a

Enhanced Damping-Like Torque through Strain Modulation in RuO2.

RuO2, recognized for its predicted strong nonrelativistic spin splitting, holds considerable potential for spin-orbit torque (SOT) applications. However, the mechanism by which lattice strain modulates its spin transport remains elusive. Here, we combine strain engineering with multiscale characterization to correlate strain, orbital hybridization, and spin Hall conductivity in RuO2. Using RuO2 (100)/Py heterostructures, we quantify the strain-dependent SOT response via harmonic Hall measurements and probe orbital hybridization through oxygen K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy. The Torque-Velocity Relationship and Second ACL Injury Risk.

CONTEXT: Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury results in an elevated risk of reinjury despite surgical ACL reconstruction (ACLR). According to the torque-velocity relationship, muscle contraction velocity and torque production should be inversely related, but this is altered following ACLR. OBJECTIVE: To determine the prognostic ability of the torque-velocity relationship to predict future ACL injury in patients recovering from primary ACLR. DESIGN: Descriptive laboratory study. SETTING: Research laboratory. PATIENTS OR OTHER PARTICIPANTS: Primary unilateral ACLR patients (n = 579, 50%

Harnessing orbital Hall effect in spin-orbit torque MRAM.

Spin-Orbit Torque (SOT) Magnetic Random-Access Memory (MRAM) devices offer improved power efficiency, nonvolatility, and performance compared to static RAM, making them ideal, for instance, for cache memory applications. Efficient magnetization switching, long data retention, and high-density integration in SOT MRAM require ferromagnets (FM) with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) combined with large torques enhanced by Orbital Hall Effect (OHE). We have engineered a PMA [Co/Ni]3 FM on selected OHE layers (Ru, Nb, Cr) and investigated the potential of theoretically predicted larger orbita

Spin-orbit-torque based on Mn-based noncollinear antiferromagnets.

In recent years, the rapid increase in data volume has driven higher demands for both the storage speed and density of spintronic devices. Non-collinear antiferromagnets have emerged as a major research focus in spintronics because of their unique properties, including negligible stray magnetic fields, picosecond-level dynamic responses, and unconventional spin polarization. This article reviews the research on utilizing Mn-based non-collinear antiferromagnets as spin source layers and magnetic layers in spintronic devices. The first section introduces the crystal and magnetic structures of Mn

Absence of orbital current torque in Ta/ferromagnet bilayers.

It has become a heated debate as to whether the orbital Hall effect of a material could generate a non-local orbital current and a non-zero spin-orbit torque on an adjacent magnetic layer. Here, we report unambiguous evidence that, regardless of the ferromagnets (FMs) (e.g., Ni, Ni81Fe19, Fe, Fe60Co20B20, and Fe50Pt50), the spin-orbit torque generated by an adjacent Ta, which is predicted to have a 50 times greater positive orbital Hall conductivity than the negative spin Hall conductivity, has essentially the same, negative efficiency. This agrees with the spin Hall effect of Ta being the onl

Oxidation-Tuned CuOx for Spin-Orbit Torque Efficiency Enhancement.

In this study, we demonstrate that oxidation-controlled CuOx layers can serve as effective sources of orbital current for enhancing damping-like spin-orbit torque (SOT) in CoFeB/Pt heterostructures. By reactively sputtering CuOx under varied oxygen concentrations, we systematically tuned its oxidation state and evaluated its impact on SOT efficiency through harmonic Hall voltage measurements. A peak damping-like SOT efficiency of |ξDL| ≈ 0.30 was achieved at Q = 4% with a CuOx thickness of 3 nm and a Pt thickness of 4 nm, representing a ∼76% enhancement over the Pt-only control structure. Sleep deprivation increases the regularity of isometric torque fluctuations.

The regularity of the fluctuations present in torque signals represent the adaptability of the motor control. While previous research showed how it is affected by neuromuscular fatigue and ageing, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. It is currently under debate whether these changes are explained by central or peripheral neuromuscular mechanisms. Here, we experimentally manipulated the sleep of thirteen young adults through a supervised 24 h-sleep deprivation protocol. This study aimed to investigate the effect of sleep deprivation on the regularity of torque fluctuations, and other stan
