Optimization of Piezoelectric Materials and Ultrasound Imaging Transducers via Alternating Current Poling.

Medical ultrasound imaging relies heavily on ultrasound transducers, whose properties directly determine transducer performance. Alternating current poling (ACP) serves as a domain engineering platform to enhance the dielectric and piezoelectric properties of ferroelectric single crystals, ceramics, and piezocomposites compared to conventional direct current poling (DCP). Although several reviews cover the microscopic mechanisms of ACP, researchers have not yet systematically analyzed these materials from the perspective of device applications. This mini-review focuses on the impact of ACP on

Histotripsy of Blood Clots within Hollow Cylindrical Transducers for Aspiration Thrombectomy Applications.

OBJECTIVE: Thrombotic occlusions in the setting of stroke, pulmonary embolism and the peripheral vasculature are increasingly being treated with catheter-based aspiration approaches. Unfortunately, aspiration is frequently unsuccessful in extracting more challenging blood clots, which can become corked in the distal tip. In this study, we investigated the feasibility of using histotripsy to mechanically degrade thrombus within the lumen of a hollow cylindrical transducer (HCT), with a view to ultimately using this approach to improve aspiration thrombectomy procedures. METHODS: Retracted porc

Breast density assessment via quantitative sound-speed measurement using conventional ultrasound transducers.

OBJECTIVES: The aim is to assess the feasibility and accuracy of a novel quantitative ultrasound (US) method based on global speed-of-sound (g-SoS) measurement using conventional US machines, for breast density assessment in comparison to mammographic ACR (m-ACR) categories. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In a prospective study, g-SoS was assessed in the upper-outer breast quadrant of 100 women, with 92 of them also having m-ACR assessed by two radiologists across the entire breast. For g-SoS, ultrasonic waves were transmitted from varying transducer locations and the image misalignments between thes

Skin-adaptive focused flexible micromachined ultrasound transducers for wearable cardiovascular health monitoring.

Continuous monitoring of cardiovascular vital signs can reduce the incidence and mortality of cardiovascular diseases, yet cannot be implemented by current technologies because of device bulkiness and rigidity. Here, we report self-adhesive and skin-conformal ultrasonic transducer arrays that enable wearable monitoring of multiple hemodynamic parameters without interfering with daily activities. A skin-adaptive focused ultrasound method with rational array design is proposed to implement measurement under wide ranges of skin curvatures and depths with improved sensing performances. We introduc

Respiratory System Monitoring Based on Low-frequency Transmission Ultrasound Using Wearable Transducers.

Ultrasound's application in respiratory system monitoring has been constrained by factors such as reflections at the lung-pleural interface and scattering within the lungs. Recent studies have shown that ultrasound from 10 kHz to 750 kHz can penetrate the human thorax during expiration. However, challenges persist in signal reception during inspiration due to low signal amplitude. In this study, we introduce a waveform matching method designed to ensure reliable transmission signal reception throughout the entire respiratory cycle by tracking waveform variations. The feasibility of this approa

Molecular Transducers of Physical Activity Consortium (MoTrPAC): human studies design and protocol.

Physical activity, including structured exercise, is associated with favorable health-related chronic disease outcomes. Although there is evidence of various molecular pathways that affect these responses, a comprehensive molecular map of these molecular responses to exercise has not been developed. The Molecular Transducers of Physical Activity Consortium (MoTrPAC) is a multicenter study designed to isolate the effects of structured exercise training on the molecular mechanisms underlying the health benefits of exercise and physical activity. MoTrPAC contains both a preclinical and human comp

Shear Wave Ultrasound Inspection of Flaws in Silicon Wafers Using Focused Transducers.

Silicon parts can contain micrometer-sized vertical cracks that are challenging to detect. Inspection using high-frequency focused ultrasound has shown promise for detecting defects of this size and geometry. However, implementing focused ultrasound to inspect anisotropic media can prove challenging, given the directional dependence of wave propagation and subsequent focusing behavior. In this work, back surface-breaking defects at various orientations within silicon wafers (0°, 15°, and 45° relative to the [010] crystallographic axis) are experimentally inspected in an immersion tank setup. Pharmacological hypogonadism impairs molecular transducers of exercise-induced muscle growth in humans.

BACKGROUND: The relative role of skeletal muscle mechano-transduction in comparison with systemic hormones, such as testosterone (T), in regulating hypertrophic responses to exercise is contentious. We investigated the mechanistic effects of chemical endogenous T depletion adjuvant to 6 weeks of resistance exercise training (RET) on muscle mass, function, myogenic regulatory factors, and muscle anabolic signalling in younger men. METHODS: Non-hypogonadal men (n = 16; 18-30 years) were randomized in a double-blinded fashion to receive placebo (P, saline n = 8) or the GnRH analogue, Goserelin [

Signal Transducers and Activators of Transcription (STAT) family members in helminth infections.

Helminth parasites are a diverse group of multicellular organisms. Despite their heterogeneity, helminths share many common characteristics, such as the modulation of the immune system of their hosts towards a permissive state that favors their development. They induce strong Th2-like responses with high levels of IL-4, IL-5 and IL-13 cytokines, and decreased production of proinflammatory cytokines such as IFN-γ. IL-4, IFN-γ and other cytokines bind with their specific cytokine receptors to trigger an immediate signaling pathway in which different tyrosine kinases (e.g. Janus kinases) are invo

Pyloric opening and closure evaluated by means of strain gauge force transducers.

Recently, gastrointestinal motility research and various studies to measure motility have been conducted. However, it is not easy to measure the pyloric sphincter motility, especially its open and closed motility. There are few reports on the opening and closed motility of the pyloric ring. In this study, I examined the pyloric motility with strain gauge force transducers (SGTs). SGTs were implanted onto the antrum, pyloric ring and duodenum of a dog. In order to clarify the relationship between the opening and closed motility of the pylorus and SGTs recordings, the pyloric ring was observed w

Specific absorption rate ratio patterns of cylindrical ultrasound transducers for breast tumors.

The purpose of this paper is to examine the optimal driving frequency and to configure the ultrasound energy deposition schema for a various size and location of breast tissues when a portion or the entire cylindrical ultrasound transducer is employed for breast hyperthermia treatments. This work employs a computer simulation program based on an ideal ultrasound power deposition from a cylindrical transducer. The ultrasound power within the breast is assumed to be exponentially attenuated according to the penetration depth of the ultrasound beam and a uniform absorption for the entire breast i

A transducer for detection of fetal breathing movements.

The paper describes a new transducer for detection of fetal movements and sounds from the maternal abdominal wall. This transducer is based on an inductive principle. The compliance of the transducer should match the compliance of the maternal abdominal wall in order to detect the very weak acoustic signal caused by individual fetal breathing movements. The contact area of the transducer is supported on a membrane, the tension of which can be adjusted so as to match the compliances of tissue and transducer. The goal of this paper is to investigate detection of fetal movements in order to monit

Ultrasound aspiration biopsy transducer amniocentesis.

Amniocentesis through an ultrasound aspiration biopsy transducer was performed 156 times. The technique is described and our results are presented. By closely monitoring the fetus and the needle entry into the amniotic cavity, we have avoided serious complications. The importance of adequate genetic counselling for the procedure is stressed, as most cases fall into the second trimester group, and the procedure is indicated in order to try to prevent inheritable disorders. The importance of continual monitoring of the fetus before, during and after the procedure is pointed out, and recommendati

Analysis of variability in pylon transducer signals.

A pylon transducer has been used to provide force and moment data relating to the stance phase of gait of below-knee amputees fitted with modular types of PTB prostheses. The data has been collected and modified using digital processing systems with particular interest in quantifying shape differences in the loading information curves. Earlier tests illustrated the need for more data to provide statistical support for conclusions. However, the requirements for more data greatly increased the data handling and storage problems. A method was devised whereby those features considered significant

Using simulation to disambiguate transducer and noise.

IMPORTANCE: Polygenic embryo screening (PES) is a novel technology that estimates the likelihood of developing future conditions (eg, diabetes or depression) and traits (eg, height or cognitive ability) in human embryos, with the goal of selecting which embryos to use. Given its commercial availability and concerns raised by researchers, clinicians, bioethicists, and professional organizations, it is essential to inform key stakeholders and relevant policymakers about the public's perspectives on this technology. OBJECTIVE: To survey US adults to examine general attitudes, interests, and conc

Zeroing a Transducer on an External Ventricular Drain.

BACKGROUND: External ventricular drains (EVDs) are commonly used in severely brain-injured patients to diagnose intracranial hypertension. The accuracy of the intracranial pressure reading is dependent on zeroing the external transducer to air. Recent concern about zeroing techniques has been identified in the neuroscience community. The open method requires removing the nonvented cap, and the closed method requires zeroing through the filter at the top of the burette. This critical appraisal seeks to explore whether zeroing a transducer on an EVD through the filter of the burette provides the

Tracing transduced cells in osteochondral defects.

In this study the authors explored the feasibility of using transduced cells for gene therapy to induce healing of osteochondral defects. Both a mouse mesenchymal cell line and mixed rabbit adherent stromal cells were transduced with either liposomal transfection or retroviral transduction using a traceable gene. Transduction efficiency was more than 95% with the retroviral construct and expression was maintained for over 6 months of passage. The liposomal transfection led to a transient expression with an efficiency of 50%. The expression of osteochondral genes was diminished but preserved af

A real-time data-based scan conversion method for single element ultrasound transducers.

The current work investigates the performance of a real-time scan conversion algorithm for generating a 2-D ultrasound image from a laterally scanned single-element ultrasound transducer, which has applications in point-of-care devices such as for skin imaging. The algorithm employs a fixed calibration curve to update a predefined image grid in real time. Simulations showed that the calibration curve (with a maximum of 1) is robust to changes in scatterer concentration (8.3×10-3 mean absolute error), signal to noise ratio (1.0×10-3 mean absolute error for -5 dB SNR), and can be accurately pred
