OBJECTIVE: To reintroduce the versatility of the pediatric cystoscope, we aimed to synthesize the origins of ureteroscopy and outline our experience utilizing the instrument for the diagnosis and treatment of ureteral pathology.
METHODS: We reviewed published literature for historical and modern-day uses of the pediatric cystoscope for ureteroscopy. In addition, we described our experience maneuvering the scope in common patient scenarios and use this to discuss the pros and cons of this tool for ureteroscopy.
RESULTS: In the 1970s, the pediatric cystoscope gave rise to diagnostic and therap

Kidney stone disease is a prevalent urological condition, affecting at least one in 10 individuals. The rising incidence of urolithiasis represents a significant burden on the National Health Service (NHS) and has driven major advances in endourology, including the use of flexible ureteroscopes (F-URS), high-efficiency laser fibres and techniques. Despite these advances, retrograde intrarenal surgery (RIRS) still has complications such as residual fragments and infection risk. Whilst suction technology has been utilised in percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) for over 25 years, its use in RIRS

INTRODUCTION: The occurrence of urolithiasis in pregnancy represents a challenge in both diagnosis and treatment of this condition, because it presents risks not only to the mother but also to the fetus. Surgical treatment may be indicated for patients with infection, persistent pain, and obstruction of a solitary kidney. We present our experience on the management of pregnant patients with ureteral calculi and a review of the literature.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The charts of 19 pregnant patients with obstructive ureteral calculi were retrospectively reviewed. Gestational age ranged from 13 to

A case of ureteral avulsion as a complication of ureteroscopy is presented. A 55-year-old woman was admitted to the hospital with the complaint of hematuria. The intravenous pyelography revealed a calculus measuring 16 x 12 mm located in the left upper ureter. Transurethral ureterolithotripsy was performed with 8 F rigid ureteroscopy. A safety guide wire was inserted and left ureteral olifice was dilated to 9 F. The ureteroscopy was smoothly introduced just under the stone. The stone was fragmentated with a pneumatic lithotripter. A part of the stone was pushed back to the renal pelvis, so the

The ureteral access sheath (UAS) facilitates the use of flexible ureteroscopy, enabling improved minimally invasive management of complex upper urinary tract diseases. The UAS, which comes in a variety of diameters and lengths, is passed in a retrograde fashion, aided by a hydrophilic coating and other features designed to confer smooth passage into the ureter with sufficient resistance to kinking and buckling. Use of a UAS has the advantage of enabling repeated passage of the ureteroscope while minimizing damage to the ureter, thus improving the flow of irrigation fluid and visualization with

INTRODUCTION: A "Negative" ureteroscopy (URS) is defined as a URS in which no stone is found during the procedure. It may occur when the stone has already been passed spontaneously or when it is located outside the collecting system. The aim of the study was to outline risk factors for Negative-URS.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the possible risk factors for Negative-URS from a database of 341 URS cases. In every case where presumptive ureteral stone was not found, a formal nephroscopy as well as a whole collecting system revision was completed. The Negative-URS group was

INTRODUCTION: With the broadening indications of ureteroscopy (URS) for complex stones and high-risk patients, more URS is being performed and hence there is an increasing risk of major potentially life-threatening complications. We wanted to define the incidence, predisposing factors, management, and long-term sequelae for post-URS perirenal hematoma (PRH).
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We conducted a systematic review of literature according to Cochrane and preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analysis guidelines for all studies reporting on post-URS PRH from 1980 to September

Two elderly patients with obstructive renal calculi who developed Candida albicans bloodstream infection within 12 h following ureteroscopy and ureteral stenting are described. Both patients were treated with prolonged courses of broad-spectrum antibiotics and were found to have urine cultures positive for Candida albicans prior to the urologic procedures. One patient also developed bilateral candidal endophthalmitis. The clinical presentation was indistinguishable from bacteremia complicating manipulation of the urinary tract. The patients were successfully treated with systemic antifungal th

OBJECTIVE: To assess the complications and outcomes associated with same-session bilateral ureteroscopy in a tertiary referral center, as same-session bilateral ureteroscopy for stone disease has been critiqued for the theoretical risk of injury to both ureters with subsequent risk to renal function.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed all cases of bilateral ureteroscopy performed for urolithiasis by a single surgeon at out institution between 2009 and 2014. These were compared to a prospective unilateral ureteroscopy database.
RESULTS: There were 117 same-session bilateral ureteroscopic pr

PURPOSE: Helical computerized tomography (CT) image acquisition has led to the availability of improved data sets for CT endoscopic imaging that represent virtual endoscopy using CT. We assessed the usefulness of CT ureteroscopic imaging for diagnosing ureteral tumors.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 16 patients with ureteral stenosis underwent surface rendering CT ureteroscopy after the intravenous administration of contrast material and furosemide. To distinguish ureteral tumors from ureteral strictures 2 observers blinded to other patient history and evaluation data independently and pro

The authors report 46 cases of rigid ureteroscopy for ureteral stone removal. Ureteroscopy procedures for extraction of lithiasis are the next-ones: stone forceps, stone basket, ultrasonic lithotripsy and electrohydraulic lithotripsy. Manipulation of calculi is done under direct vision. A success rate of ureteroscopy was of 89% (41 patients). All of the patients with stone removal failure underwent immediate operative intervention (open ureterolithotomy in 4 patients and ureteral reimplantation in 1). The best results were obtained for distal calculi (pelvic lithiasis): success rate of 91.4%.

BACKGROUND: The lower calyx is the most common site for kidney stones. While minimally invasive, flexible ureteroscopic lithotripsy often yields suboptimal stone-free rates (SFR) for lower calyx stones due to anatomical constraints and limited endoscope deflection.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of a novel technique that combines Sotn ureteroscopy (Sotn-URS) with flexible ureteroscopy (fURS), involving stone displacement before lithotripsy, for managing lower calyx stones ⩽20 mm.
DESIGN: A retrospective comparative study complemented by in vitro simulation experiments.

Stone surgery is one of oldest surgical practices undertaken by man. Hippocrates refused to let his followers "cut for the stone" and it was only in February 1980, when the first human trial of shock wave therapy on a renal stone was performed with success that a new era in minimally invasive treatment (surgery) for stones was opened up and this condemnation was finally resolved in the Hippocratic Oath. Endoscopy, using natural orifices, supported by anaesthesia, incremented by technology and with access to all points along the urinary tract, began by competing with ESWL, but is now the treatm

Fibroepithelial polyps (FEPs) are rare benign upper urinary-tract neoplasms originating from mesodermal components of the ureteral wall covered in normal urothelial epithelium. Historically, these lesions have been treated with endoscopic, laparoscopic, or open means depending on the size, number, and morphology of the polyps. Digital ureteroscopy (DURS) offers many advantages over fiber-optic endoscopy, including superior resolution and potential ergonomic benefits, given the absence of external cameras and light cords. We describe a case involving multiple proximal ureteral FEPs treated with

PURPOSE: Advancements in the endourological equipment have made retrograde intrarenal surgery (RIRS) an attractive, widespread technique, capable of competing with traditional shock wave lithotripsy and percutaneous nephrolithotomy. Since the complication rate is generally low, even less is known about dramatic and fatal complications after RIRS.
METHODS: We performed a survey asking 11 experienced endourologists to review their RIRS series and report the cases of mortality to their best knowledge.
RESULTS: Six urologists reported on six fatal cases. In three cases, a history of urinary trac

We report a case of multiple ureteral polyps treated with a rigid ureteroscope in a 27-year-old man with the chief complaint of left lower abdominal pain. The patient, who had left renal stones pointed out on his plain film, was referred for further examination and treatment of left hydronephrosis as suggested by drip infusion pyelography (DIP). DIP and retrograde pyelography (RP) revealed left hydronephrosis and a filling defect in the upper third of ureter. An ureteroscopic inspection and biopsy was conducted. The pathological diagnosis was fibroepithelial polyps of the ureter, so we perform
