Clinical Utility of Contrast-Enhanced Ultrasound (CEUS) in Urology: A Multisystem Review.

Contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) is a non-invasive, versatile imaging technique with an expanding spectrum of uses across a wide variety of urological disorders. By utilizing microbubble-based contrast agents confined to the intravascular space, CEUS provides real-time, high-resolution assessment of tissue vascularity without ionizing radiation or nephrotoxic contrast. This review presents an updated overview of CEUS applications in urology, including renal mass characterization, staging of bladder cancer, assessment of scrotal trauma, fertility interventions such as microdissection testicu

High-flow priapism undergoing arterial embolization: review of literature following American Urological Association guideline on the management of priapism.

We report herein a case of a patient with high-flow priapism for whom a gelatin sponge was used as a temporary occlusive agent in arterial embolization, resulting in favorable outcome. The American Urological Association guideline on the management of priapism recommends using temporary occlusive agents. We reviewed all reports published after the introduction of this guideline to compare temporary and permanent occlusive agents in terms of symptom improvement and onset of erectile dysfunction. The rate of symptom improvement differed significantly between temporary and permanent embolizing ma

The effect of combining prewarming with intraoperative phenylephrine infusion on the prevention of hypothermia in patients undergoing urological surgery: a prospective, randomized, and controlled trial.

Background: Hypothermia is common in patients undergoing urological surgery; however, no single preventative modality is completely effective. This study evaluated the effects of combining prewarming with intraoperative phenylephrine infusion for the prevention of hypothermia in patients undergoing urological surgery. Methods: This prospective study enrolled 58 patients scheduled for urological surgery under general anesthesia. The patients were randomized into two groups (n = 29). Patients in the experimental (prewarming and phenylephrine infusion) group (PP group) received prewarming for 20

The Backbone of Regional Anesthesia: The History of Spinal Anesthesia in Urology.

Spinal anesthesia was first introduced in 1885 by James Leonard Corning, who successfully injected cocaine between the spinous processes of the lower lumbar vertebrae. One of the earliest reports on the use of spinal anesthesia in urology was in 1910 by S.P. Delaup. Since then, spinal anesthesia has developed significantly, from the anesthetic agents used to the delivery mechanism. This review explores the history of spinal anesthesia development and its historical use in urological procedures.

Clinical and microbiological characteristics and outcomes of complicated urinary tract infections managed in a hospital-at-home programme: a prospective observational cohort study.

PURPOSE: Complicated urinary tract infections (cUTIs) are a frequent indication for admission to Hospital-at-Home (HaH) and outpatient parenteral antimicrobial therapy (OPAT) programmes. We describe the clinical, urological and microbiological profile, antimicrobial treatment and outcomes of a cUTI cohort managed in a HaH unit, and explored, in an exploratory analysis, factors associated with the 30-day composite of unplanned readmission or death. METHODS: Prospective observational single-centre cohort of 262 consecutive cUTI episodes managed in a tertiary HaH unit (March 2023-October 2025).

[Effectiveness of imipenem/cilastatin (Tienam, MSD) in treating complicated infections in urology].

Complicated urinary infections tend to eventuate in severe pyoseptic complications--bacteriuria, sepsis. The search for methods of fighting agents of urinary infections goes in the direction of perfection of already existing methods and in the direction of design of novel antibacterial drugs. In the middle 1980s the first carbapenem drug-imipenem--was proposed for urological clinical practice. Mechanism of its action as that of the other beta-lactam antibiotics consists in impairment of synthesis of bacterial cell wall as a result of the drug penetration through the surface membrane and irreve

Perioperative use of venous thromboembolism prophylaxis following major urologic oncology surgeries: A survey of the Society of Urologic Oncology.

INTRODUCTION: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a significant concern following radical cystectomy (RC) and other major urologic oncologic surgeries. In a 2019 survey of the Society of Urologic Oncology (SUO), 80% of respondents reported using extended VTE prophylaxis (EP), usually enoxaparin, though many cited financial concerns, poor compliance, and administration difficulty as barriers. We hypothesize that practice patterns may have changed since the adoption of apixaban for EP, and aim to describe current practices for RC and other oncologic surgeries, as well as compare barriers to both for

Survey of antibiotic prophylaxis in British urological practice.

Guidelines for the use of prophylactic antibiotics to cover operative procedures on the urinary tract have been suggested, but the extent to which these have been adopted into routine practice has not been assessed. This survey documents the use of prophylactic antibiotics in urological surgery in Britain. It demonstrates that awareness of the potential role of antibiotic prophylaxis is increasing. Most urologists now adopt a selective approach in the use of prophylactic agents.

Prophylaxis in urological surgery.

Prophylaxis in urological surgery is usually taken to mean antibacterial agents. However, in this study, other factors such as the environment, patient risk and surgical risk factors are also taken into account. Because patients have a wide variety of possible risk factors, individual variations must be possible. In standard transurethral resection in non-risk patients, single-dose preoperative prophylaxis may be sufficient. In open surgery prophylactic measures should be varied according to the extent of the procedure.

Applications of Plant Lectins in Detection and Targeted Therapy of Urological Cancers.

Urological Cancers pose a serious threat to human health and represent a major challenge to healthcare systems worldwide. Among these, bladder cancer (BC), prostate cancer (PCa), and renal cancer (RC) are the most prevalent. Primary clinical management involves local or radical resection. However, for patients with advanced or inoperable disease, as well as those at high risk of post-surgical recurrence, chemotherapy remains an essential alternative or adjuvant treatment. Nevertheless, the lack of tumor targetability leads to low bioavailability and significant side effects of drugs, limiting

Prevention and management of infectious complications in prostate biopsy: A review.

Prostate biopsies are common procedures for urologists, performed in order to detect and diagnose prostate cancer. Procedures continue to evolve, for instance, recently there has been an increase in the use of the transperineal approach, and the emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria has become a challenge. This review examines the recent prostate biopsy literature as well as the guidelines of three urological associations. We review the recent literature, including our own recent studies, and the Japanese Urological Association, European Association of Urology and American Urological Asso

Botulinum toxin in the treatment of OAB, BPH, and IC.

Botulinum neurotoxins (BoNTs) are well known for their ability to potently and selectively disrupt and modulate neurotransmission. BoNT is currently undergoing regulatory evaluation for urological disorders in the United States and the European Union and is not FDA approved for urologic use. Overactive bladder (OAB) and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) are common urologic conditions characterized by urinary frequency, urgency, nocturia, urge incontinence and, in the case of BPH, decreased urine flow that are currently being evaluated in clinical trials with BoNT-A.
