Larvicidal and repellent potential of Zingiber nimmonii (J. Graham) Dalzell (Zingiberaceae) essential oil: an eco-friendly tool against malaria, dengue, and lymphatic filariasis mosquito vectors?

Mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) are important vectors of terms of public health relevance, especially in tropical and sub-tropical regions. The continuous and indiscriminate use of conventional pesticides for the control of mosquito vectors has resulted in the development of resistance and negative impacts on non-target organisms and the environment. Therefore, there is a need for development of effective mosquito control tools. In this study, the larvicidal and repellent activity of Zingiber nimmonii rhizome essential oil (EO) was evaluated against the malaria vector Anopheles stephensi, the

Zingiber cernuum (Zingiberaceae) essential oil as effective larvicide and oviposition deterrent on six mosquito vectors, with little non-target toxicity on four aquatic mosquito predators.

Mosquitoes are responsible for the transmission of many pathogens and parasites, which cause serious diseases in humans and animals. Currently, botanical products have been suggested as alternative tools in the fight against arthropod vectors. In this study, the essential oil (EO) extracted from Zingiber cernuum was tested as larvicide and oviposition deterrent on six mosquito species of public health relevance, including malaria and Zika virus vectors. The EO showed high toxicity on third instar larvae of Anopheles stephensi (LC50 = 41.34 μg/ml), Aedes aegypti (LC50 = 44.88 μg/ml), Culex quin

Molecular mechanisms of chemopreventive effects of selected dietary and medicinal phenolic substances.

Recently, considerable attention has been focused on identifying naturally occurring chemopreventive substances capable of inhibiting, retarding, or reversing the multi-stage carcinogenesis. A wide array of phenolic substances, particularly those present in dietary and medicinal plants, have been reported to possess substantial anticarcinogenic and antimutagenic activities. The majority of these naturally occurring phenolics retain antioxidative and anti-inflammatory properties which appear to contribute to their chemopreventive or chemoprotective activity. Genome-Wide Characterization of PEBP, FD, and GRF Families in Amomum villosum Lour. and Their Potential Roles in Flowering.

A detailed understanding of the molecular mechanisms governing the flowering time of Amomum villosum Lour., a medicinal plant within the Zingiberaceae family, is currently lacking. In modern plants, the florigen activation complex (FAC), which includes PEBP, FD/bZIP, and GRF proteins, is known to regulate flowering. In this study, we identified 13 PEBP, 5 FD, and 19 GRF genes within the A. villosum genome and conducted phylogenetic, structural and promoter analysis. Notably, cross-species protein-protein interaction predictions and yeast two-hybrid assays uncovered an unexpected interaction pa

NMR-based stability evaluation of (E)-1-(3',4'-dimethoxyphenyl)butadiene (DMPBD) from Zingiber cassumunar Roxb. rhizome.

INTRODUCTION: The active compound (E)-1-(3',4'-dimethoxyphenyl)butadiene (DMPBD) isolated from the rhizomes of Zingiber cassumunar Roxb. has potent anti-inflammatory and anticancer activities. Although DMPBD is one of the promising drug candidates for phytomedicine, its limited stability impedes its widespread use. For the development of new drugs, the assessment of their chemical stability is essential, ensuring they maintain their properties within specified limits throughout the period from production until use. OBJECTIVE: In the present study, we aimed to evaluate the stability of DMPBD u

Spicing up endogenous neural stem cells: aromatic-turmerone offers new possibilities for tackling neurodegeneration.

There is a growing interest in the therapeutic utility of compounds derived from Curcuma longa, an herb of the Zingiberaceae family that has been part of traditional medicine for centuries. Recent reports suggest that bioactive compounds isolated from the rhizome of these plants can address two key aspects of brain injury following stroke that must be dealt with for functional recovery to occur: the moderation of neuroinflammation, and the mobilization of endogenous stem cells resident in the nervous system. Defining their mechanism of action remains a question, but emerging evidence may point
