BACKGROUND: Cognitive function, working memory, attention, and coordination are higher-level functions sharing a complex relationship. Limited evidence exists on the effectiveness of multi-domain cognitive function interventions to improve cognitive outcomes. We evaluated the effectiveness of such interventions on cognitive function, working memory, attention, and coordination in older adults with mild cognitive impairment and mild dementia.
METHODS: We conducted a double-blind, two-arm, parallel-group randomised controlled trial in community care centres of Northern Taiwan. We recruited 72 p

INTRODUCTION: The very long-term effect of cognitive training on the risk of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) is unknown.
METHODS: This study links data from the Advanced Cognitive Training for Independent and Vital Elderly (ACTIVE) study (a four-arm randomized controlled trial of cognitive training in a large, diverse sample) to Medicare claims (1999 to 2019). Inclusion in the analyses required being enrolled in traditional Medicare at baseline (n = 2021). ADRD was measured with the Chronic Conditions Warehouse algorithm.
RESULTS: Participants randomized to the speed-trainin

Older adults with hearing loss often struggle to understand speech in background noise because degraded auditory input increases demand on attention, working memory, and control. Auditory-cognitive training (ACT) can improve speech-in-noise (SiN) comprehension, but whether such gains are accompanied by changes in large-scale neural connectivity remains poorly understood. We tested whether ACT was associated with pre-to-post changes in source-space alpha-band phase synchrony within an auditory-control network during continuous SiN comprehension, and whether such changes related to ACT-associate

BACKGROUND: Training visual processing skills, a domain implicated in sport performance and injury risk, could reduce injuries among youth athletes. The useful field of view (UFOV) cognitive training program improves visual processing efficiency. While UFOV training has been extensively studied in aging populations and yields significant cognitive and functional benefits, it has yet to be examined in adolescents.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to preliminarily assess the feasibility and acceptability of UFOV training in youth and report on the magnitude of change in visual processing eff

Trauma exposure is prevalent among youth and associated with adverse outcomes. While evidence-based treatments (EBTs) for trauma-exposed youth exist, widespread dissemination into community practice is challenged by clinicians' abilities to engage in EBT training. These challenges stem from many individual, agency, and neighborhood-level factors. This study utilized data from 231 therapists who participated in a statewide Learning Collaborative (LC) on TF-CBT to explore how individual, agency, and neighborhood-level factors may influence their level of participation in the training requirement

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) models highlight maladaptive attention as a maintaining factor of SAD, potentially negatively impacting how individuals with SAD engage with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) content in a therapist's presence. Emotional working memory training (eWMT) has been shown to improve affective attentional control. This pilot study assessed the proposed methodology for a randomized controlled trial (RCT) to determine whether eWMT, by improving attentional control prior to internet-based CBT (iCBT), results in better CBT outcomes. The RCT would be considered feasible if th

Cocaine-related contextual cues are a recurrent source of craving and relapse. Extinction of cue-driven cocaine seeking remains a clinical challenge, and the search for adjuvants is ongoing. In this regard, combining physical and cognitive training is emerging as a promising strategy that has shown synergistic benefits on brain structure and function, including enhancement of adult hippocampal neurogenesis (AHN), which has been recently linked to reduced maintenance of maladaptive drug seeking. Here, we examined whether this behavioral approach disrupts cocaine-context associations via improve

CONTEXT: Researchers have shown that patients with chronic ankle instability (CAI) have deficits in memory and attention allocation. This functional deficit affects lower extremity performance. Motor-cognitive dual-task training may improve lower limb dysfunction caused by central nervous system injury. Further study is needed to determine whether dual-task training is more favorable than single-task training for improving neuromuscular control in patients with CAI.
OBJECTIVE: To compare the effects of balance-cognition dual-task training and balance single-task training on lower limb functio

BACKGROUND: Anorexia Nervosa (AN) is a severe mental illness, which typically develops in adolescence and, if left untreated, often becomes chronic. Body dissatisfaction is a core characteristic of AN. Mirror exposure (ME) is an effective therapeutic technique to tackle body dissatisfaction in adult patients with eating disorders, but there is limited evidence for the effects of ME in adolescence. One potential mechanism underlying effects of ME on body dissatisfaction is change in body-related attention bias. However, this mechanism remains to be empirically tested. Accordingly, the aim of th

Cognitive training has shown promise for improving cognition in older adults. Age-related neuroanatomical changes may affect cognitive training outcomes. White matter hyperintensities are one common brain change in aging reflecting decreased white matter integrity. The current study assessed (1) proximal cognitive training performance following a 3-month randomized control trial and (2) the contribution of baseline whole-brain white matter hyperintensity load, or total lesion volume (TLV), on pre-post proximal training change. Sixty-two healthy older adults were randomized to either adaptive c

BACKGROUND: Recently, mindfulness-based therapies have emerged as a treatment modality for OCD, but there is sparse controlled data. We report the efficacy of mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) in treating OCD in comparison with stress management training (SMT).
METHODS: 60 outpatients with DSM-IV-TR OCD attending a specialty OCD clinic were randomly assigned in 1:1 ratio to either MBCT (n=30) or SMT (n= 30). Both the groups received 12 weekly sessions of assigned intervention. An independent blind rater assessed the primary outcome measure at baseline and at the end of 12 weeks.

BACKGROUND: While the clinical results from transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) for the treatment of depression have been promising, antidepressant effects in patients with medication resistance have been suboptimal. There is therefore a need to further optimise tDCS for medication resistant patients. In this clinical pilot study we examined the feasibility, safety, and clinical efficacy of combining tDCS with a psychological intervention which targets dysfunctional circuitry related to emotion regulation in depression, Cognitive Emotional Training (CET).
METHODS: tDCS was administ

Computerized targeted cognitive training (TCT) of auditory processing has been shown to improve verbal learning in several clinical trials of schizophrenia outpatients. Less is known, however, about the effectiveness of this promising intervention in more chronic, treatment-refractory patients who are treated in non-academic settings. This study aimed to determine whether TCT improves auditory processing, verbal learning, and clinical symptoms in SZ patients mandated to receive care at a locked residential rehabilitation center. Secondarily, potential factors that moderate TCT's effectiveness

Everyday activities like walking and talking can put an older adult at risk for a fall if they have difficulty dividing their attention between motor and cognitive tasks. Training studies have demonstrated that both cognitive and physical training regimens can improve motor and cognitive task performance. Few studies have examined the benefits of combined training (cognitive and physical) and whether or not this type of combined training would transfer to walking or balancing dual-tasks. This study examines the dual-task benefits of combined training in a sample of sedentary older adults. Seve

Guided Internet-based cognitive-behavioural self-help (ICBT) has been proven to be effective for social anxiety disorder (SAD) by several independent research groups. However, as the proportion of clinical significant change has room for improvement, new treatments should be developed and investigated. A novel treatment is attention bias modification (ABM). This study aimed at evaluating the combination of ABM and ICBT. We compared two groups, one group receiving ICBT and ABM targeting attentional avoidance and the other group receiving ICBT and control training. ABM and control training tasks
