Large-scale pesticide monitoring across Great Barrier Reef catchments--Paddock to Reef Integrated Monitoring, Modelling and Reporting Program.

The transport and potential toxicity of pesticides in Queensland (QLD) catchments from agricultural areas is a key concern for the Great Barrier Reef (GBR). In 2009, a pesticide monitoring program was established as part of the Australian and QLD Governments' Reef Plan (2009). Samples were collected at eight End of System sites (above the tidal zone) and three sub-catchment sites. At least two pesticides were detected at every site including insecticides, fungicides, herbicides, and the Reef Plan's (2009) five priority photosystem II (PSII) herbicides (diuron, atrazine, hexazinone, tebuthiuron

Biochemical and histopathological effects of the stonefish (Synanceia verrucosa) venom in rats.

The Reef Stonefish (Synanceia verrucosa) is one of the most dangerous venomous fish known, and has caused occasional human fatalities. The present study was designed to examine some of the pathological effects of the venom from this fish in Sprague Dawley rats. Crude venom was extracted from venom glands of the dorsal spines of stonefish specimens collected from coral reefs in the Gulf of Aqaba (in the northeastern branch of the Red Sea). The rats were given intramuscular injections of the venom and acute toxicity and effect on selected serum marker enzymes as well as normal architecture of vi

High-throughput phenotyping reveals nutrient availability alters thermal performance in two Symbiodiniaceae species.

Nutrient sharing between corals and Symbiodiniaceae is crucial to the survival of coral reefs. However, optimal nutrient conditions for different Symbiodiniaceae species remains unclear, partly due to a lack of high-throughput methods for phenotyping Symbiodiniaceae. We developed a high-throughput phenotyping method for Symbiodiniaceae to grow monocultures of Cladocopium proliferum and Durusdinium trenchii in 96-well plates. We utilised spectrophotometry, light-induced fluorescence transient-fast repetition rate fluorometry, and flow cytometry to characterise physiological responses over 11 da

Metabolomic variability of four macroalgal species of the genus Lobophora using diverse approaches.

Among comparative metabolomic studies used in marine sciences, only few of them are dedicated to macroalgae despite their ecological importance in marine ecosystems. Therefore, experimental data are needed to assess the scopes and limitations of different metabolomic techniques applied to macroalgal models. Species of the genus Lobophora belong to marine brown algae (Family: Dictyotaceae) and are widely distributed, especially in tropical coral reefs. The species richness of this genus has only been unveiled recently and it includes species of diverse morphologies and habitats, with some speci

Intravascular Lithotripsy of Aortic and Renal Lesions as a Therapeutic Tool for Pickering Syndrome: A Case Report.

We report the case of a 73-year-old woman admitted with Pickering syndrome, a life-threatening condition characterized by recurrent flash pulmonary edema secondary to severe renovascular disease. Computed tomography angiography demonstrated an atrophic left kidney, a heavily calcified visceral aorta with a coral-reef morphology, and a near-occlusive stenosis of the right renal artery. Urgent endovascular treatment was performed with intravascular lithotripsy for plaque modification of the suprarenal aorta and the right renal artery, followed by renal artery stenting. The patient showed prompt

No effect of short-term exposure to ocean acidification on individual-level variation in behaviour and susceptibility to predation in a Great Barrier Reef damselfish.

Ocean acidification, caused by rising carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere, has been reported to negatively impact a wide variety of behaviours in fishes, including activity, exploration, and predator avoidance. These effects have been documented at the population level, but many animal species naturally show large and repeatable individual-level differences in behaviour. How environmental stressors, such as ocean acidification, affect behavioural variation at the individual level remains largely unknown but is vital in understanding adaptation given natural selection operates on variation a

Methylome Profiling of a Deuterostome Invertebrate Using Oxford Nanopore Technology (ONT).

DNA methylation is crucial for genome regulation and provides key insights into the interaction between genetics and environmental factors, offering valuable perspectives for ecological research. However, knowledge of DNA methylation patterns in nonmodel invertebrates remains limited. The present study addresses this knowledge gap by conducting the first methylome profiling of the Pacific crown-of-thorns seastar (CoTS; Acanthaster cf. solaris), a coral-eating species that aggravates the decline of Indo-Pacific coral reefs. Using Oxford Nanopore Technology (ONT) we generated long-read sequences

A complex of species related to Paradiscogaster glebulae (Digenea: Faustulidae) in chaetodontid fishes (Teleostei: Perciformes) of the Great Barrier Reef.

A total of 1523 individuals of 34 species of chaetodontids from the Great Barrier Reef were examined for faustulid trematodes. Specimens resembling Paradiscogaster glebulae Bray, Cribb & Barker, 1994 were found in nine chaetodontid species at three localities. These specimens are shown, on the basis of combined morphological and molecular analyses, to comprise a complex of morphologically similar and partly cryptic species. The complex may comprise as many as six distinct species of which three are resolved here. The true P. glebulae is identified in Chaetodon ornatissimus Cuvier, 1831, Chaeto

[Neurologic manifestations of ciguatera. 3 cases with a neurophysiologic study and examination of one nerve biopsy].

Ciguatera is the commonest form of poisoning resulting from eating fish in the tropics. It has been recognised since the 15th century. The disease is due to the formation of ciguatoxin by a dinoflagellate, Gambierdiscus toxicus, loosely attached to algae growing on coral reefs. The toxin, which is harmless to the fish, is ingested by small herbivorous fish and passes up the food chain as these are eaten by carnivores. The toxic effects include gastroenteritis, itching of the skin, peripheral neuropathy and central nervous system dysfunction. Though most cases are mild, occasionally the disease

Draft Genome of the Rice Coral Montipora capitata Obtained from Linked-Read Sequencing.

The rice coral, Montipora capitata, is widely distributed throughout the Indo-Pacific and comprises one of the most important reef-building species in the Hawaiian Islands. Here, we describe a de novo assembly of its genome based on a linked-read sequencing approach developed by 10x Genomics. The final draft assembly consisted of 27,870 scaffolds with a N50 size of 186 kb and contained a fairly complete set (81%) of metazoan benchmarking (BUSCO) genes. Based on haploid assembly size (615 Mb) and read k-mer profiles, we estimated the genome size to fall between 600 and 700 Mb, although the high

Heterotrophy and symbiosis affect energy reserves for pedal lacerates in the sea anemone Exaiptasia diaphana.

Nutrient exchange between corals and their dinoflagellate symbionts is the foundation of the stable symbiosis that underpins coral reef ecosystem success. The cnidarian-dinoflagellate holobiont engages in both autotrophy (photosynthates supplied by the symbiont) and heterotrophy (feeding by the host on microscopic organisms and particulate matter) to meet their nutritional demands. While considerable research has been devoted to understanding nutrient dynamics in adult corals and other symbiotic cnidarians, less is known about how the combination of heterotrophy and autotrophy influences nutri

Three scleractinian coral diseases in Dominica, West Indies: distribution, infection patterns and contribution to coral tissue mortality.

Coral diseases have been documented in many areas of the Caribbean, but studies in the eastern Caribbean region have been lacking. The prevalence, distribution patterns and contribution to the mortality of coral tissue by black band discase (BBD), white plague (WP) and dark spots disease (DSD) were examined at five reef sites along the west coast of Dominica. 185 of the 325 diseased colonies recorded between March and August 2000, in a survey area of 5884 m2, were WP. This disease contributed to 89% of the total 4.08 m2 of tissue mortality caused by diseases during the survey period. WP also a

[Study of three ciguatera fish poisoning cases in Xiamen city, in 2005].

OBJECTIVE: To find out the reason of three ciguatera fish poisoning cases in Xiamen in 2005 and identify the fish species. METHODS: The grouper implicated in food poisoning and seven other coral reef fishes collected from market were tested by mice bioassay and ciguatoxin-test kit. The mtDNA was extracted from toxic grouper meat, and Cty b gene segment was amplified and the PCR products were sequenced. The sequences were compared with those in the GenBank. RESULTS: The result turned out to be positive by the ciguatoxin-test kit, while the toxicity of the toxic grouper implicated in food pois

Offshore oil and gas infrastructure plays a minor role in marine metapopulation dynamics.

Decommissioning consequences of offshore oil and gas infrastructure removal on marine population dynamics, including connectivity, are not well understood. We modelled the connectivity and metapopulation dynamics of three fish and two benthic invertebrate species inhabiting the natural rocky reefs and offshore oil and gas infrastructure located in the Bass Strait, south-east Australia. Using a network approach, we found that platforms are not major sources, destinations, or stepping-stones for most species, yet act as modest sources for connectivity of Corynactis australis (jewel anemone). Modeling sediment transport in Qatar: Application for coastal development planning.

Hydrodynamics and sediment transport are key physical processes contributing to habitat structure within the marine environment. Coastal development that results in the alteration of these processes (e.g., changing water flushing and/or sedimentation rates) can have detrimental impacts on sensitive systems. This is a current, relevant issue in Qatar as its coastal regions continue to be developed, not only around the capital of Doha, but in many areas around this Arabian Gulf peninsula. The northeastern Qatari coast is comprised of diverse and sensitive flora and fauna such as seagrass and mac

Ciguatera fish poisoning in Hong Kong--a 10-year perspective on the class of ciguatoxins.

The present study used liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) to investigate retrospectively ciguatoxin (CTX)-positive samples as determined by mouse bioassay (MBA) in the past 10 years in Hong Kong. The results showed that Pacific CTXs (P-CTX-1, -2 and -3) were the most commonly observed toxins found in the samples, indicating Pacific Ocean areas as the most important origin of ciguatera fish poisoning. Clinical diagnosis from ciguatera patients also revealed the predominance of neurological illnesses in most cases, supporting intoxication of Pacific origin. This study demo

Spatiotemporal patterns of benthic communities on the shallow reefs of Southwestern Atlantic oceanic islands.

Reef ecosystems are among the most diverse marine systems, with benthic communities underpinning trophic structure and habitat complexity. However, long-term dynamics of benthic assemblages in oceanic reefs remain poorly resolved, particularly across isolated tropical systems under different protection regimes. Here, we assessed spatial and temporal variation in benthic community composition across four Brazilian oceanic islands: St. Peter and St. Paul Archipelago (SP), Rocas Atoll (RA), Fernando de Noronha Archipelago (FN), and Trindade Island (TR). Using annual photoquadrat surveys since 201

Plasticity of brain sexual dimorphism as revealed by sex changing fish.

Sex determination in coral reef fish is highly plastic, with many species displaying socially controlled sequential hermaphroditism. In these species, social hierarchy cues trigger sex change, initiating transformations in neuroanatomy, physiology, morphology, and behavior. The process begins in the brain, where shifts in dominance status alter cortisol release and neuromodulator signaling, including dopamine and arginine vasotocin. Radial glia detect these changes and modulate local estradiol synthesis via brain aromatase production that in turn influences neurogenesis and gene expression in
