Although the effect of time to death (TTD) on health care expenditures (HCE) has been investigated using individual level data, the most profound implications of TTD have been for the forecasting of macro-level HCE. Here we estimate the TTD model using macro-level data from the Netherlands consisting of mortality rates and age- and gender-specific per capita health expenditures for the years 1981-2007. Forecasts for the years 2008-2020 of this macro-level TTD model were compared to forecasts that excluded TTD. Results revealed that the effect of TTD on HCE in our macro model was similar to tho

Accurate and reliable forecasting models are critical for guiding public health responses and policy decisions during pandemics such as COVID-19. Retrospective evaluation of forecasting performance provides an essential framework for assessing and improving epidemic prediction methods. In this study, we used COVID-19 wastewater data from CDC's National Wastewater Surveillance System to generate sequential weekly retrospective out-of-sample forecasts for the United States from March 2022 through September 2024, both at the national level and for four major regions (Northeast, Midwest, South, an

Therapeutic apheresis and dialysis : official peer-reviewed journal of the International Society for Apheresis, the Japanese Society for Apheresis, the Japanese Society for Dialysis Therapy2026eng
BACKGROUND: Japan has one of the highest dialysis prevalence rates worldwide and a shrinking, aging population. Whether dialysis burden has entered a sustained post-peak phase or whether recent declines partly reflect pandemic-related disruptions remains uncertain.
METHODS: We analyzed nationwide data from the Japanese Society for Dialysis Therapy Renal Data Registry (1983-2022) to project dialysis prevalence and incidence through 2050. Seven forecasting approaches were implemented, including classical time-series models, demographic regression models, machine-learning algorithms, and a perfo

Sustainable food systems are increasingly challenged by climate change, resource constraints, market volatility, and growing food demand, making accurate forecasting of food production essential for food security and long-term sustainability. Despite the growing use of machine learning in agricultural forecasting, studies directly modeling the Food Production Index (FPI) within a sustainable food systems framework remain limited, particularly in emerging economies. This study addresses this gap by forecasting Türkiye's Food Production Index using agricultural, macroeconomic, and trade-related

BACKGROUND: Population aging poses major challenges to health-care systems by increasing the prevalence of chronic diseases and raising the demand for blood transfusion. Blood is essential in surgery, cancer therapy, and critical care, which are frequently used in older adults. However, declining birth rates and diminishing younger cohorts threaten the sustainability of the blood donor pool. METHODS: In this study, we integrated demographic data from the Taiwanese household registration system, annual blood supply and demand data from the Taiwan Blood Services Foundation, and national populati

BACKGROUND: Robust forecasting of hepatitis B trends is important for long-term surveillance and public health planning in China. However, evidence remains limited regarding how different forecasting frameworks perform when applied to a long-term national hepatitis B surveillance series under a unified out-of-sample evaluation design.
METHODS: Monthly reported hepatitis B cases in China from January 2004 to December 2024 were obtained from national public surveillance databases. Data from January 2004 to December 2023 were used as the training set, whereas data from January to December 2024 w

Critically ill patients frequently require multiple concurrent interventions with complex interdependencies, yet existing prediction models treat these as independent events. We developed FIRST-ICU (Forecasting Interventions and Risk Stratification in the ICU), a unified deep learning framework integrating a graph neural network encoder, LSTM, and a novel Intervention Interaction Attention Module (IIAM) for joint prediction of seven ICU interventions. FIRST-ICU was developed using MIMIC-IV (n = 23,926) and externally validated on AmsterdamUMCdb (n = 12,603) without retraining. The Temporal Dec

Malaria remains a public health challenge in Nigeria, characterised by high endemicity with seasonal and perennial transmission, varying between regions. Existing control programmes often face challenges related to the allocation of resources and the timing of interventions, which may be due to an inadequate understanding of local seasonal transmission patterns. Hence, this study analysed the temporal patterns of malaria incidence in Bauchi, Yobe, and Ogun states (representing high, low, and moderate transmission settings) to identify hidden patterns in non-stationary time series and forecast t

Dengue fever, a vector-borne disease, is a major public health challenge. Accurate prediction methods that can better reflect the complexity of the outbreak are essential for dengue prediction and vector control. In this study, we introduce an adapted Spatio-Temporal Graph Convolutional Network (STGCN), originally developed for traffic forecasting, to predict weekly dengue cases in nine countries in South and Central America from 2014 to 2022. In this approach, we use environmental and socio-economic data in addition to climate data and historical dengue case information to capture complex tra

Dengue is an arboviral disease of high public health relevance, characterized by pronounced temporal variability, nonlinearity, and recurrent outbreaks, which pose challenges to epidemiological surveillance and decision-making. This study evaluated the performance of machine learning methods for short-term forecasting of the weekly dengue morbidity rate in the 27 Brazilian capital cities, comprising the 26 state capitals and Brasília, Federal District, with horizons up to 4 weeks. Epidemiological, climatic, and socioeconomic data were compiled for these capital cities and used to compare a Gat

INTRODUCTION: Provincial-level monthly HIV/AIDS case-count forecasting is important for public health surveillance, early warning, and resource allocation. Existing methods often struggle to capture both cross-regional dependency patterns and complex temporal dynamics from routine notification data.
METHODS: Using province-by-month case reports from January 2010 to December 2020, a graph-aware spatio-temporal forecasting framework was developed. The model integrates multi-scale 3DCNN encoding, Graph-Aware Spatio-Temporal Attention for modeling inter-provincial relations on a province graph, a

The long-term effects of Postacute Sequelae of SARS-CoV-2, known as PASC, pose a significant challenge to healthcare systems worldwide. Accurate identification of progression events-such as hospitalization and reinfection-is essential for effective patient management and resource allocation. However, traditional models trained on structured data struggle to capture the nuanced progression of PASC. In this study, we introduce the first publicly available cohort of 18 PASC patients, with text time series features based on Large Language Model Llama-3.1-70B-Instruct and clinical risk annotated by

PURPOSE: Forecasting the depth of anesthesia (DOA) is significant for adjusting the dosage of propofol infusion during total intravenous anesthesia. Traditional pharmacokinetic (PK) and pharmacodynamic (PD) models may lack precision in DOA forecasting. Thus, machine learning models optimized to fit the clinical data have been adopted to predict the DOA, showing improved accuracy. These earlier approaches followed the recurrent and/or the feed-forward framework that generates the predictions based on the patient's demographic data. In this work, to explore the potential advantages of using real

A strong body of evidence indicates that social determinants impact health. While this research has identified a range of risk factors for health, health equity goals require recalibration further "upstream" towards structural drivers of health and aging inequities. Recognizing how systems of power and chronic exposures are embodied and facilitate differential risks and opportunities is important for expanding research at the gender-race-age nexus. Specifically, adopting a structural aging approach can help contextualize health outcomes for older Black women. Drawing from previous research, we

Continuous prediction of glucose levels and hypoglycemia events is critical for managing type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) under intensive insulin therapy. Existing models focus on a single task, limiting their practicality and adaptability in automated insulin delivery (AID) systems. To address this, a domain-agnostic continual multi-task learning (DA-CMTL) framework that simultaneously performs glucose level forecasting and hypoglycemia event classification within a unified framework is proposed. Trained on simulated datasets via Sim2Real transfer and adapted using elastic weight consolidation

Multivariate time series (MTS) forecasting is essential for process monitoring and decision optimization in numerous real-world domains. Existing deep models need to be trained from scratch on abundant data, resulting in limited generalization. Inspired by the success of large language models (LLMs) on various cross-modality tasks, recent research introduces LLMs for MTS forecasting. However, due to the inherent modality gap between MTS and text, there remain two challenges in generating MTS representations suitable for LLMs and handling the intricate inter-variable dependencies. To tackle the

BACKGROUND: Dengue fever is a major global health concern, with Brazil experiencing recurrent and severe outbreaks due to its favorable climate factors, socio-environmental conditions, and increasing human mobility. Accurate forecasting of dengue cases and outbreak risk is essential for early warning systems and effective public health interventions. Traditional forecasting models primarily rely on historical case data and climate variables, often neglecting the role of human movement in virus transmission. This study addresses this gap by incorporating human mobility data into a deep learning

Air pollution, driven by seasonal and meteorological variations, poses a significant threat to public health and urban sustainability. Despite numerous forecasting approaches, the influence of seasonal patterns on air pollutant levels remains underexplored. This study presents a computational framework utilizing the Nonlinear Autoregressive network with Exogenous inputs (NARX) model to predict concentrations of key pollutants SO₂, PM₁₀, NO, NOX, and O₃ in Esenyurt, one of the most industrialized districts in Istanbul, Turkey. Through systematic feature selection techniques, the study determine

Mpox (monkeypox) is a re-emerging viral disease with increasingly sustained human transmission, particularly in previously unaffected regions. In this study, we develop a compartmental epidemic model that captures mpox transmission dynamics and incorporates a treatment function to assess the impact of medical interventions on disease progression and recovery. The model is calibrated using U.S. case data, with parameters estimated via the Trust Region Reflective optimization method to ensure close alignment with observed trends. We perform global sensitivity analysis using partial rank correlat
