Relief of chronic or resistant depression (Re-ChORD): a pragmatic, randomized, open-treatment trial of an integrative program intervention for chronic depression.

BACKGROUND: Chronic depression is a particularly disabling mood disorder and treatment outcomes are poor with either psychotherapy or pharmacotherapy alone. There is growing evidence that an integrative treatment approach may be optimal. A novel multi-modal, multi-disciplinary treatment program, Re-ChORD, was developed at the University of British Columbia and evaluated in this pilot study. METHODS: Re-ChORD consisted of guidelines-based medication management, and group-based interpersonal psychotherapy and occupational therapy. A randomized, parallel-groups, open-treatment trial was conducte

An apprenticeship model in the training of psychotherapy students. Study protocol for a randomized controlled trial and qualitative investigation.

BACKGROUND: One approach towards advancing the quality of mental health care is to improve psychotherapists' skills through education and training. Recently, psychotherapy training has benefitted from adapting training methods from other professions (e.g., deliberate practice). The apprenticeship model has a long history in skill trades and medicine, but has yet to be adopted in training mental health professionals. This study aims to investigate the impact of apprenticeship training on clinical psychology students' skills. METHODS: In a pragmatic mixed-methods trial, 120 first year students

Observations on Working Psychoanalytically with a Profoundly Amnesic Patient.

Individuals with profound amnesia are markedly impaired in explicitly recalling new episodic events, but appear to preserve the capacity to use information from other sources. Amongst these preserved capacities is the ability to form new memories of an emotional nature - a skill at the heart of developing and sustaining interpersonal relationships. The psychoanalytic study of individuals with profound amnesia might contribute to the understanding the importance of each memory system, including effects on key analytic processes such as transference and countertransference. However, psychoanalyt

Relationship Disappointment Stress Syndrome as a Cultural and Post-Trauma Phenomenon in Sub-Saharan Africa: Case Report.

This report presents the case of a not yet well-researched condition referred to as relationship disappointment stress syndrome (RDSS). This syndrome appears to be linked to cultural norms that romanticize marriage and unresolved post-traumatic sequelae, both of which may contribute to overly optimistic relationship expectations. When these expectations are unmet, individuals may experience the profound effects of disappointment. This case study highlights the experience of three selected patients out of 10 cases who underwent psychotherapy at the Baho Smile Institute in Rwanda. We observed th

Preventive interventions for perinatal mood and anxiety disorders: A review of selected programs.

Perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs) have high prevalence rates and profound deleterious effects on birthing people, families, and society. Counseling interventions have been shown to be effective and carry minimal risk. We review here the protocols and clinical trial data of four preventive counseling interventions that are effective at preventing PMADs. We present the Mothers and Babies (MB) program, a cognitive-behavioral preventive intervention, and Reach Out, Stay Strong, Essentials for mothers of newborns (ROSE), an interpersonal psychotherapy preventive intervention. We also pre

Using classification trees to identify psychotherapy patients at risk for poor treatment adherence.

To determine the relative importance of a wide variety of personality and psychopathology variables in influencing patients' adherence to psychotherapy treatment. Two classification trees were trained to predict patients' (1) treatment utilization (i.e., their likelihood of missing a given appointment) and (2) termination status (i.e., their likelihood of dropping out of therapy prematurely). Each tree was then validated in an external dataset to examine performance accuracy. Patients' social detachment was most influential in predicting their treatment utilization, followed by affective insta

Loneliness Is Associated With Lower Self- and Clinician-Rated Levels of Personality Functioning.

Personality disorders (PDs) are associated with interpersonal dysfunction, loneliness, and reduced social embeddedness. This study investigates loneliness and social network size in association with self- and clinician-rated personality functioning regarding the DSM-5's Alternative Model for Personality Disorders (AMPD). Eighty psychiatric inpatients including participants with and without PDs completed the Semi-structured Interview for Personality Functioning, the Level of Personality Functioning Scale - Brief Form, the UCLA Loneliness Scale, and the Social Network Index. Patients with PDs re

Pathways to Health Reported by Patients With Borderline Personality Disorder With a Good Overall Outcome Versus a Fair-Poor Outcome Over 24 Years of Prospective Follow-Up.

Our objective was to determine pathways to health reported by patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD) who had and had not attained a good overall outcome over 24 years of prospective follow-up. Overall outcome symptomatically and psychosocially and 11 pathways to health related to vocation, relationships, activities, and psychiatric treatment that patients reported were helpful to their functioning or feeling better about themselves were assessed at 12 contiguous 2-year follow-up periods using a semistructured interview. Good outcome patients reported significantly higher rates of

Goal-focused positive psychotherapy in action: A case study.

OBJECTIVE: This case study describes one client's progression through goal-focused positive psychotherapy (GFPP), a positive psychology inspired treatment. The study aims to contribute a more nuanced understanding of GFPP by illustrating the clinical use of approach goals, hope, positive emotion, and client strengths-interventions that constitute the heart of GFPP. METHOD: The case study methodology illuminates the 33-session treatment of a self-identified European-American heterosexual female in her mid-twenties, presenting with several interpersonal concerns, and symptoms of depression and

[Functional dyspepsia--a psychosomatic disease].

About 4% of consultations in general practice involve patients with upper gastrointestinal complaints. Evidence of peptic ulcer disease is identified in only 20-30% of the patients. No organic explanation of the symptoms is found using endoscopy in 20-50%; these patients are given the diagnosis non-ulcer dyspepsia or functional dyspepsia. Hypersecretion of gastric acid and the bacteria Helicobacter pylori, which seem to be major aetiologic factors in duodenal ulcer, are not important in functional dyspepsia. In these patients gastric motor abnormalities and visceral hypersensitivity are the mo

Establishing an optimal working relationship with patients with an antisocial personality disorder. Aspects and processes in the therapeutic alliance.

OBJECTIVE: Developing good interpersonal relationships is one of the main impediments for people with an antisocial personality disorder (ASPD). However, in treatment of psychiatric disorders, establishing a strong therapeutic alliance (TA) is important for effective treatment. Nevertheless, there is little knowledge on how to establish this TA with this challenging patient group. This study investigates which factors are important in TA development. METHOD: For this study, a qualitative research methodology is applied. In-depth interviews with therapists experienced in treating ASPD were con

Correlates of changes in personal construing of members of two psychotherapy groups: changes in affective expression.

Changes in verbal affective expression within sessions of two psychotherapy groups run along group-analytic lines were measured using the Process Affective Scoring System developed by Gibbard & Hartman (1973). Tape recordings of group sessions were rated by trained undergraduate students for presence or absence of verbal affect. Relationships between these changes and changes in personal construing were sought. Expression of hostility and affection were found to be good predictors of a successful outcome of therapy. Factors which might account for the unexplained variance of changes in outcome

Schema Therapy for Children and Adolescents: A Systematic Review of Individual, Group, and Parent-Based Interventions.

Schema therapy (ST) is an integrative psychotherapy targeting early maladaptive schemas formed in childhood. Recently, ST has been increasingly used to treat emotional, behavioral, and interpersonal difficulties in youth. This review synthesized evidence on ST interventions for individuals aged 5–18 across individual, group, and parent-focused formats. Following PRISMA 2020, a systematic search of PubMed, Cochrane Library, Scopus, Web of Science, and Ovid MEDLINE (2000–2025) identified studies using schema therapy or schema-informed interventions with quantitative outcomes from quasi-experimen

Feasibility and acceptability of Interpersonal Social Rhythm Therapy (IPSRT) for perinatal bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: The perinatal period, pregnancy through postpartum, is destabilizing for people with bipolar disorder (BD). Few studies have examined adjunctive psychotherapy for perinatal BD despite its potential benefits for managing symptoms, psychosocial stress, sleep disturbance, and medication adherence. The goal of this pilot study was to develop an adaptation of Interpersonal and Social Rhythm Therapy (IPSRT) as an intervention for perinatal BD and test feasibility and acceptability (primary) and mood symptom change (secondary) outcomes in an open trial design. METHODS: Modifications to t

What Emerging Treatments Teach us About Psychotherapy for Adolescent Personality Disorder and the Road Ahead.

This commentary, written for Journal of Clinical Psychology: In Session, synthesizes five case-based contributions on psychotherapy for adolescents with personality disorders (PDs). Although PDs often emerge in adolescence, age-adapted treatments remain scarce. Randomized clinical trials are still limited, making carefully constructed case studies important for identifying promising treatments. Three of the featured cases draw on mentalization-based therapy for adolescents, implemented in combined group-individual formats, adapted toward dimensional models of PD, or extended socioecologically

The influence of vocal synchrony on outcome and attachment anxiety/avoidance in treatments of social anxiety disorder.

Research indicates an effect of nonverbal synchrony on the therapeutic relationship and patients' symptom severity within psychotherapy. However, vocal synchrony research is still rare and inconsistent. This study investigates the relationship between vocal synchrony and outcome/attachment dimensions, controlling for therapeutic alliance and movement synchrony. Our sample consisted of 64 patients with social anxiety disorder. Symptom severity was assessed with the Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale and the Inventory of Interpersonal Problems, whereas attachment was assessed with the Experiences in

Preliminary investigation of objective and subjective experiences of relatives of individuals with hoarding behaviors.

OBJECTIVE: Families of individuals with hoarding symptoms report substantial burden; however, there has been no investigation of potential positive experiences. The objective of this study was to examine the experiences reported by individuals with a relative with elevated hoarding symptoms using a cross-sectional design. The current investigation expands on the literature in this area by incorporating a detailed interview of experiences in conjunction with validated measures of hoarding symptomology. METHODS: Twenty-nine adults with relatives with elevated hoarding symptoms completed self-re

Is "Self-Experience" Really a Transdiagnostic Concept? Preliminary Evidence in Favor of the Transdiagnostic Conception of Functional Analytic Psychotherapy.

Functional Analytic Psychotherapy (FAP) offers a radically behavioral and transdiagnostic conception of the formation of the "self" and the appearance of a diversity of psychological problems. This study examined the extent to which a wide variety of psychological disorders (somatization, obsessive-compulsive, interpersonal sensitivity, depression, anxiety, hostility/aggressiveness, phobic anxiety, paranoid ideation, and psychoticism) and a global index of psychopathological severity may in fact be linked to problems of the "self" according to the FAP conception. Two questionnaires, one relate
