Lack of "ventricular interdependence" in constrictive pericarditis and atrial septal defect.

Ventricular interdependence, i.e., reciprocal variations in the left and right ventricle pressures with respiration, is a hallmark of the hemodynamic diagnosis of constrictive pericarditis (CP). Similarly, respiratory variations in the mitral and tricuspid valve Doppler inflow velocities on echocardiogram are very helpful in the diagnosis of CP. We document the absence of such variations in a patient with CP and associated atrial septal defect. It is important to be mindful of this intuitively obvious fact; otherwise, the diagnosis of CP might be missed.

Robotic-assisted, ultrasound-guided abdominal cerclage during pregnancy: overcoming minimally invasive surgery limitations?

Herein, we report robotic abdominal cerclage placement under ultrasound guidance. The da Vinci Si system (Intuitive Surgical, Sunnyvale, CA) allows a simultaneous display of the operative field and transvaginal ultrasound images. Additionally, the vaginal ultrasound probe assisted in the manipulation of the uterus to improve visualization without placing excessive pressure on the gravid uterus. Ultrasound guidance improves needle placement accuracy and reduces potential for injuries.

Comorbidity of pain and anxiety disorders.

The comorbidity of anxiety disorders with pain has received little research attention even though recent studies show that these disorders are as likely to co-occur with chronic pain conditions as depressive disorder. Comorbid anxiety has implications for the impact and outcome of pain conditions. Even though it may be intuitively plausible to suppose that the anxiety occurs in the context of a preexisting pain condition, there is evidence for a reverse causal link and shared risk factors, including distal events occurring in childhood.

All that glitters is not gold: The false-symbol problem in archaeology.

Stibbard-Hawkes forcefully alerts us to the pitfall of false-negative reasoning in symbolic archaeology. We highlight the twin problem of false-positive reasoning in what we call the "false-symbol problem." False symbols are intuitively special entities that, owing to their non-utilitarian nature, invite symbolic interpretation. But they are not symbolic. We link the false-symbol problem to work in comparative primate cognition, taking "primate art" as our main example.

Robotically enhanced mediastinal teratoma resection: a case report and review of the literature.

Mediastinal teratomata are rare, extragonadal germ cell tumors, which can occur at any age and are often asymptomatic. We present the case of a 57-year-old female with chronic cough diagnosed with a mass in the anterior mediastinum. The mass was successfully resected using the Intuitive Da Vinci® robotic system. The patient had an uneventful recovery. Review of the literature demonstrates that robotic surgery of the mediastinum is a safe and feasible alternative in selected cases.

Applications of Single-Atom Alloys in Thermal, Electro, and Photo Catalysis.

Single-atom alloys (SAAs) are an emerging class of heterogeneous catalysts that maximize atom efficiency by embedding isolated reactive metal atoms within a host metal surface, creating well-defined active sites. Atomic isolation imparts unique catalytic properties, including high selectivity, resistance to poisoning, coking, and sintering, and in some cases the ability to circumvent conventional scaling relationships that limit traditional catalysts. This article focuses on progress in the SAA field since our 2020 review (Chem. Rev.2020, 120, 12044-12088.), while incorporating earlier foundat

iDCF: Interpretable deconvolution of cell fractions via biologically-informed deep learning using scRNA-seq data.

Precise resolution of cellular heterogeneity within complex tissues is fundamental to deciphering disease etiologies from bulk transcriptomic profiles. While computational deconvolution offers a scalable alternative, current deep learning methods predominantly operate as "black boxes," neglecting the structural constraints of biological laws. This reliance on purely data-driven feature extraction often yields biologically incoherent predictions and limited mechanistic interpretability. iDCF (Interpretable Deconvolution of Cell Fractions) is a novel framework that enforces biological topology o

Psychotherapists' Discursive Constructions of Culture and Cultural Conversations in Therapy.

Disparities in the quality of mental healthcare services for majoritized versus minoritized clients are pronounced, while therapists draw on intuition and wider societal ideologies rather than professional training to confront the question of how to address clients' cultural identities and backgrounds in psychotherapy. This signals a gap between theoretical calls for cultural sensitivity and the practical implementation of culturally responsive care. The current study explores how psychotherapists deal with the dilemma of how to conceptualize, address, and discuss 'culture' in their practice.

Artificial Intelligence in Organic Synthesis.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly reshaping organic synthesis; nevertheless, currently most laboratory practice still remains driven by human intuition, trial-and-error optimization, and manual interpretation of analytical data. Here, we synthesize recent advances that move AI from isolated demonstrations to a practical toolkit spanning the full experimental cycle: molecular design and prioritization, computer-assisted synthesis planning and route selection, catalyst and condition optimization, and AI-enabled product identification and verification using chromatographic and spectroscopic

SPACESHIP: Autonomous Mapping of Hardware-Dependent Synthesizable Space in Solution-Phase Gold Nanomaterials.

Autonomous laboratories hold great promise for accelerating materials discovery but often inherit hidden limits because experimental boundaries have been predefined by human intuition or literature precedents. Such a priori constraints risk excluding feasible regions, particularly since synthesizable conditions can shift with hardware or environmental factors. We present SPACESHIP, an AI framework integrated with automated experimental hardware for adaptive exploration of chemical spaces free from literature- or expert-derived feasibility constraints. Through an AI-based prediction, robotic sy

Token-based fidelity scoring for trustworthy vision transformer interpretations in medical imaging.

PURPOSE: This work addresses the problem that interpretability methods for medical imaging models are still mostly evaluated by agreement with human annotations, even though such agreement does not necessarily indicate that an explanation is faithful to the model's actual decision-making. The goal is to quantify fidelity, defined here as the extent to which an explanation reflects the evidence that truly drives model predictions, independent of human intuition, bias, or incomplete annotation. METHODS: We propose a prediction confidence-based approach to estimate token importance in vision tra

TradePool: A Novel Interpretable Framework for Quantifying Atomic Attribution Values in Molecular Property Prediction.

The interpretability of GNNs (Graph Neural Network Models) has always been a focal point in the field of compound property prediction. GNNs perform well in modeling small-sample compound data sets, but current interpretable methods struggle to accurately interpret atomic attribution values, quantitative measures of individual atom attribution to model predictions. This makes the optimization of lead compounds reliant on the experience of senior chemists, slowing the drug development process. The rapid expansion of the AI-generated chemical space necessitates efficient interpretation of AI (XAI

Influence of Opponent Knowledge and Competitive Level on the Cognitive Processes of Decision-Making in High School Kendo Athletes: An Exploratory Study.

In competitive sports, players must make decisions rapidly and accurately. However, the cognitive process underlying decision-making while integrating opponent knowledge and relative competitive level remains unclear. This study explored whether these conditions influenced the cognitive process underlying decision-making in kendo athletes. Thirty high-school kendo experts (higher- and lower-skilled groups) observed temporally occluded videos of "kote" (wrist) and "men" (head) actions performed by a familiar high-level model and an unfamiliar intermediate-level model. They anticipated the strik

Imaging biomarkers in functional neurological disorders.

Recent advances in neuroimaging have significantly reshaped our understanding of functional neurological disorder (FND), shifting the focus from structural damage to dysfunctional brain networks. Building on Charcot's early intuition of a 'functional lesion', this review traces the evolution of neuroimaging research in FND, from its historical roots to current developments. We synthesize findings from structural and functional imaging studies, highlighting alterations in brain regions involved in motor control, self-agency and emotion regulation. Task-based fMRI studies have shown atypical act

Highly Efficient Discovery of 3D Mechanical Metamaterials via Monte Carlo Tree Search.

Machine learning (ML) has surpassed traditional intuition-driven trial-and-error approaches in metamaterial design by employing efficient inverse pipelines based on structure-property mapping. However, three critical challenges impede the applications of ML when extending the geometry from 2D to 3D: exponentially increasing design space dimensionality, scarce high-quality training data, and excessive computational demands. To address these problems, Monte Carlo Tree Search-Active Learning (MCTS-AL), an active learning framework integrating Monte Carlo Tree Search (MCTS), convolutional neural n

Decoding face identity: A reverse-correlation approach using deep learning.

Face recognition is crucial for social interactions. Traditional approaches primarily rely on subjective judgment, utilizing a pre-selected set of facial features based on literature or intuition to identify critical facial features for face recognition. In this study, we adopted a reverse-correlation approach, aligning responses of a deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) with its internal representations to objectively identify facial features pivotal for face recognition. Specifically, we trained a DCNN, namely VGG-FD, to possess human-like capability in discriminating facial identities.

A scoping review of the application of motor learning principles to optimize myoelectric prosthetic hand control.

Although prosthetic hand rejection rates remain high, evidence suggests that effective training plays a major role in device acceptance. Receiving training early in the rehabilitation process also enhances functional prosthetic use, decreases the likelihood of developing an overreliance on the intact limb, and reduces amputation-related pain. Despite these obvious benefits, there is a current lack of evidence regarding the most effective training techniques to facilitate myoelectric prosthetic hand control, and it remains unknown whether training is effective in facilitating the acquisition an

[Scientific medicine and care relationship: From the therapeutic alliance to the therapeutic effect of the alliance].

The new paradigm of precision medicine in oncology questions today the respective place of evidence-based medicine and doctor-patient relationship. Based on the results of a randomized study comparing the efficacy of a homeopathic molecule in the prevention of nausea and vomiting induced by chemotherapy in non-metastatic breast cancer, this article extends and develops the discussion of maintaining an unresolved tension between medical art and medical science, between care and cure. This tension sets a base for the authors of the therapeutic alliance in medicine, defined as a dialectic constan
