The use of a virtual patient to follow pleural pressure changes associated with therapeutic thoracentesis.

PURPOSE: Influence of therapeutic thoracentesis on the pleural pressure (Pp) has been discussed in many clinical studies, however reasons of Pp changes are not precisely established. The aim of the study was to use a previously elaborated virtual cardiopulmonary patient (VP) in analysis of impact of physiological factors on Pp during the procedure. METHODS: Simulations were performed on VP with default values of parameters for which VP simulated the respiratory system of the average 50-year-old healthy Polish woman according to spirometric examination. Alterations of Pp and the amplitude of P

CCD Camera Detection of HIV Infection.

Rapid and precise quantification of the infectivity of HIV is important for molecular virologic studies, as well as for measuring the activities of antiviral drugs and neutralizing antibodies. An indicator cell line, a CCD camera, and image-analysis software are used to quantify HIV infectivity. The cells of the P4R5 line, which express the receptors for HIV infection as well as β-galactosidase under the control of the HIV-1 long terminal repeat, are infected with HIV and then incubated 2 days later with X-gal to stain the infected cells blue. Digital images of monolayers of the infected cells

Virtual Surgical Planning for Orbital Reconstruction.

The advent of computer-assisted technology has revolutionized planning for complex craniofacial operations, including orbital reconstruction. Orbital reconstruction is ideally suited for virtual planning, as it allows the surgeon to assess the bony anatomy and critical neurovascular structures within the orbit, and plan osteotomies, fracture reductions, and orbital implant placement with efficiency and predictability. In this article, we review the use of virtual surgical planning for orbital decompression, posttraumatic midface reconstruction, reconstruction of a two-wall orbital defect, and

Investigating the muscle activities of performing surgical training tasks using a virtual simulator.

The objective of this study was to determine the muscle activities of upper extremities while performing fundamental surgical training tasks using a virtual simulator. Six subjects performed virtual cutting tasks and their muscle activities of upper extremities were measured. The results demonstrated a significant increase in muscle activities in both proximal and distal upper extremities, which are the common areas of occurrence of injury after prolonged practice. This study suggests that the upper trapezius and the extensor digitorum are essential prime movers to perform surgical training ta

Integration of surgical simulation in plastic surgery residency training.

BioDigital Systems, LLC in collaboration with New York University Langone Medical Center Department of Reconstructive Plastic Surgery has created an interactive, step-based latissimus musculocutaneous flap simulator. Preliminary testing of fourteen residents (PGY1-6) demonstrates that simulator training results in significant improvement in an objective assessment of surgical knowledge (p < 0.0006, pre-training score: 81.0%, post-training score 92.7%). This study is the first in the field of plastic and reconstructive surgery to demonstrate objective improvement in surgical knowledge as a r

Head movements and simulator sickness generated by a virtual environment.

BACKGROUND: For virtual environments (VEs) to be useful in training it is important to understand the negative effects of VE exposure. The purpose of this study was to observe head movements in virtual and real environments and the relation between those movements and simulator sickness. METHOD: There were 48 men who were trained in 4-person teams in either a head-mounted display (HMD)-based VE or in a real world environment. Head position data were collected in both systems and simulator sickness scores were collected in the VE. The relationship of head movements and sickness scores in theVE

[CORBA-based design and packaging of picture archiving and communication system object].

Regionalization has become one of the most important trends in the development of picture archiving and communication systems (PACS) due to the existence of large amounts of information islands. The conventional PACS designed according to the DICOM standard on the basis of the C/S structure fails to meet the demand of regional information system maintenance. A regional PACS system based on common object request broker architecture (CORBA) distributed technology is therefore proposed and implemented. This article describes the design and packaging of the PACS objects. When mounting a series of

Goal selection versus process control in a brain-computer interface based on sensorimotor rhythms.

In a brain-computer interface (BCI) utilizing a process control strategy, the signal from the cortex is used to control the fine motor details normally handled by other parts of the brain. In a BCI utilizing a goal selection strategy, the signal from the cortex is used to determine the overall end goal of the user, and the BCI controls the fine motor details. A BCI based on goal selection may be an easier and more natural system than one based on process control. Although goal selection in theory may surpass process control, the two have never been directly compared, as we are reporting here.

[Behavioral approach to facilitate appropriate use of antibiotics].

Many hospitals have infection control education programs to facilitate the appropriate use of antimicrobial agents. Even with these efforts, however, it is not rare to encounter irregular prescriptions. In order to solve this discrepancy between knowledge and actual behavior, we chose an alternative approach to improve the decision making process. Recent advances in information technology have made it possible to not only instantly integrate various bacterial examination results using a computer, but to simultaneously carry out the statistical analyses at a much lower cost. We employed a clien

Isolated congenital round window absence.

Absence of the round window as a congenital defect is a rare entity that causes a conductive hearing loss. To the best of our knowledge, isolated and nonsyndromal round window absence has only been reported 3 times; the diagnoses were made during surgery. We are reporting on another case that was diagnosed before operation by virtual endoscopy of the middle ear during a high-resolution computed tomography scan. Although this new technique requires further validation, it may be an alternative to surgery as a means of confirming this rare diagnosis.

A study of interactivity in educational patient hypermedia.

This study explores the use of interactive graphics for patients about to undergo Ishiki Type I thyroplasty, a surgery for unilateral vocal cord palsy. Steps include exploration of previous studies, needs assessment, prototype creation, and formative evaluation. Research suggests that interactive graphics should include the opportunity for the patients to practice and engage in a relevant, realistic scenario. Needs assessment results suggest the need for further studies with interactive graphics using larger patient sample sizes.

Expert systems for the prediction of ovulation: comparison of an expert system shell (Expertech Xi Plus) with a program written in a traditional language (BASIC).

The use of an expert system shell (EXPERTECH Xi Plus) in the construction of an expert system for the diagnosis of infertility has been evaluated. A module was devised for predicting ovulation from the medical history alone. Two versions of this system were constructed, one using the expert system shell, and the other using QuickBASIC. The two systems have been compared with respect to: (1) ease of construction; (2) ease of knowledge base update; (3) help and explanation facilities; (4) diagnostic accuracy; (5) acceptability to patients and clinicians; (6) user-friendliness and ease of use; (7

User Needs and Preferences for Multimodal Interaction in Social Robots for Later-Life Support: An Exploratory Survey and Conceptual Five-Layer Architecture.

Social robots hold promise for enhancing later-life support, but user needs and preferences for multimodal interaction modalities remain underexplored. This study explores awareness, willingness, perceived barriers, and modality-function associations across multiple interaction modalities among middle-aged and older adults, and proposes a conceptual five-layer architecture for design guidance. A questionnaire survey with 199 Chinese respondents (aged 45-64: 89.4%, 65+: 10.6%) examined perceptions of voice, visual, gestural, affective, sEMG, and brain-computer interface interactions. Cybersickness Abatement From Repeated Exposure Generalizes Across Experiences.

Cybersickness, or sickness caused by virtual reality (VR), represents a significant threat to the usability of VR applications. Repeated exposure to the same VR stimulus causes a reduction in cybersickness, referred to as Cybersickness Abatement from Repeated Exposure (CARE). This study examined whether the benefits of CARE generalize across distinct VR contexts, which was operationalized as three distinct games (a climbing game, a puzzle game, and a stealth survival game). Participants played a VR game for up to 20 minutes. Those in the Repeated Exposure condition played one VR game (either a

The Impact of Environment Design Bias on Working Memory.

Extended Reality (XR) is a powerful tool for training, education, and gaming. Research suggests that gender differences exist in XR environments including women having a lower sense of subjective presence and being more susceptible to motion sickness. However, the underrepresentation of women both as participants and researchers could lead to potential design biases, impacting the accuracy and inclusivity of XR systems. This work investigates subtle design differences in virtual environments on women's performance on a cognitive test. Non-male participants (n = 40) completed the Stroop Interfe
