Comparison of the Utility of Amplitude-Spectral and Coherence Features of Psychotropic Drugs' Action on ECoG Signal for Pharmaco-EEG Based Drug Screening in Rats.

A naive Bayesian classifier (NBC) combined with principal component analysis (PCA) effectively differentiates the dose-dependent effects of certain groups of psychoactive drugs based on their impact on the amplitude-spectral characteristics of electrocorticograms (ECoG) in rats. This approach has been shown to be useful for pharmacological screening of agents with unknown or poorly understood activity. Despite previously obtained optimistic results, classification determination for some drugs was inaccurate, necessitating the search for possible ways to improve the predictive effectiveness of

The Future of Oncology in Psychiatric Medications.

Recent years have provided numerous reports on the mechanisms of action of psychiatric medications (antidepressants, antipsychotics, mood stabilizers, and antidementia drugs) that directly inhibit the growth of cancer cells, as well as on their indirect effects on the psyche and immune system, and their supportive effects on chemotherapeutic agents. The mechanisms of the anticancer activity of psychiatric drugs include inhibition of dopamine and N-methyl-D-aspartate receptors that work via signaling pathways (PI3K/AKT/mTOR/NF-κB, ERK, Wnt/ß-catenin, and bcl2), metabolic pathways (ornithine dec

Considerations and Current Trends in the Management of the Geriatric Patient on a Consultation-Liaison Service.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To provide consultation-liaison psychiatrists with an updated resource that can assist in the treatment and management of geriatric patients. RECENT FINDINGS: The current available literature has not shown any differences in efficacy between haloperidol and second-generation antipsychotics in patients with delirium. When considering relative advantages of forms of antipsychotic administration, there is no support for a superior safety profile of oral compared to intramuscular or intravenous administration. A recent meta-analysis of four randomized controlled trials conclude

Interventions for preventing delirium in hospitalised non-ICU patients.

BACKGROUND: Delirium is a common mental disorder, which is distressing and has serious adverse outcomes in hospitalised patients. Prevention of delirium is desirable from the perspective of patients and carers, and healthcare providers. It is currently unclear, however, whether interventions for preventing delirium are effective. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effectiveness of interventions for preventing delirium in hospitalised non-Intensive Care Unit (ICU) patients. SEARCH METHODS: We searched ALOIS - the Cochrane Dementia and Cognitive Improvement Group's Specialized Register on 4 December 20

Manic and hypomanic states in cancer patients: A systematic review.

OBJECTIVES: While there have been reports on the relationship between cancer and depression, reports on the association between cancer and manic states, a reciprocal state of depression, have been relatively few. Therefore, we conducted a systematic review on the relationships between cancer and manic states, focusing on their etiology, clinical course, and impact on cancer treatments. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted using four electronic databases, following the PRISMA guidelines. The scope of the study included research on manic or hypomanic states associated with cancer in patie

Ontology-based collection, representation and analysis of drug-associated neuropathy adverse events.

BackgroundNeuropathy often occurs following drug treatment such as chemotherapy. Severe instances of neuropathy can result in cessation of life-saving chemotherapy treatment.ResultsTo support data representation and analysis of drug-associated neuropathy adverse events (AEs), we developed the Ontology of Drug Neuropathy Adverse Events (ODNAE). ODNAE extends the Ontology of Adverse Events (OAE). Our combinatorial approach identified 215 US FDA-licensed small molecule drugs that induce signs and symptoms of various types of neuropathy. ODNAE imports related drugs from the Drug Ontology (DrON) wi

Comparative efficacy, tolerability, and acceptability of pharmacological interventions for the treatment of children, adolescents, and young adults with Tourette's syndrome: a systematic review and network meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: In clinical practice guidelines there is no consensus about the medications that should be initially offered to children and young people with Tourette's syndrome. To provide a rigorous evidence base that could help guide decision making and guideline development, we aimed to compare the efficacy, tolerability, and acceptability of pharmacological interventions for Tourette's syndrome. METHODS: For this systematic review and network meta-analysis, we searched the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Embase, PsycINFO, PubMed, Web of Science, the WHO International Clinica

Systematic review of interventions for treating or preventing antipsychotic-induced tardive dyskinesia.

BACKGROUND: Antipsychotic medication can cause tardive dyskinesia (TD) - late-onset, involuntary, repetitive movements, often involving the face and tongue. TD occurs in > 20% of adults taking antipsychotic medication (first-generation antipsychotics for > 3 months), with this proportion increasing by 5% per year among those who continue to use these drugs. The incidence of TD among those taking newer antipsychotics is not different from the rate in people who have used older-generation drugs in moderate doses. Studies of TD have previously been found to be limited, with no treatment approach

Cancer Pain Is Not One-Size-Fits-All: Evolving from Tradition to Precision.

Cancer pain remains a significant challenge in oncology, profoundly affecting patients' quality of life, function, and prognosis. Historically under-recognized and managed with a uniform, opioid-centric approach, cancer pain was often inadequately treated. Advances in pain assessment, multimodal analgesia, and supportive care have improved outcomes, yet traditional algorithms frequently fail to address the complex, heterogeneous nature of cancer pain. Contemporary management is shifting toward precision and personalized medicine, integrating genetic, molecular, and biomarker data with individu

Acute Generalized Exanthematous Pustulosis: Clinical Features, Differential Diagnosis, and Management.

Acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis (AGEP) is a rare, acute, severe cutaneous adverse reaction mainly attributed to drugs, although other triggers, including infections, vaccinations, ingestion of various substances, and spider bites, have also been described. AGEP is characterized by the development of edema and erythema followed by the eruption of multiple punctate, non-follicular, sterile pustules and subsequent desquamation. AGEP typically has a rapid onset and prompt resolution within a few weeks. The differential diagnoses for AGEP are broad and include infectious, inflammatory, a

[Atypical antipsychotics and sexual dysfunction: five case-reports associated with risperidone].

LITERATURE FINDINGS: Sexual and reproductive function side effects of atypical antipsychotics are frequent, often underestimated and badly tolerated. They contribute to the 50% rate of non-compliance reported for treated patients. Prevalence of sexual dysfunction associated with atypical antipsychotic treatment is high, varying from 18 to 96%. Atypical antipsychotics aren't, as a group, much better than typical antipsychotics, and among them, risperidone seems to induce more and quetiapine less sexual dysfunction. Most atypicals are non-selective, and have actions on multiple central and perip

[A rare and not very studied disorder: childhood-onset schizophrenia. A case report].

UNLABELLED: Childhood-onset schizophrenia is rare: its prevalence is about 50 times lower than the one observed in adulthood. It is also frequently unrecognized, notably because its clinical aspect varies with age. The authors report the case of a prepubertal girl who developed a typical clinical picture of schizophrenia (paranoid subtype) by age 9. CASE REPORT: The patient was 10 years old when she was hospitalized for a relapse of a suspected childhood-onset schizophrenia. Several significant mental disorders were found in her family history: her mother was treated for mood disorders (inclu

[Review of psychopharmacological treatments in adolescents and adults with autistic disorders].

Autism is an early developmental disorder. It leads to severe and durable disturbances. Given this problem, no treatment can be excluded a priori. Thus, many approaches are used to deal with autistic disorders. In France, pharmacological treatments are, for instance, largely and mostly used in adults. In the USA, these treatments concern 50% of persons with autism of any age. Nevertheless, they are rarely based on controlled studies. At the present, however, prescriptions and expected effects appear to be hard to localize. Furthermore, only few controlled studies validate their use. Aim - We o

Integrated safety profile of selinexor in multiple myeloma: experience from 437 patients enrolled in clinical trials.

Selinexor is an oral, small molecule inhibitor of the nuclear export protein exportin 1 with demonstrated activity in hematologic and solid malignancies. Side effects associated with selinexor include nausea, vomiting, fatigue, diarrhea, decreased appetite, weight loss, thrombocytopenia, neutropenia, and hyponatremia. We reviewed 437 patients with multiple myeloma treated with selinexor and assessed the kinetics of adverse events and impact of supportive care measures. Selinexor reduced both platelets and neutrophils over the first cycle of treatment and reached a nadir between 28 and 42 days.

Bridging the gap: ferroptosis of immune cells in the tumor microenvironment.

Ferroptosis, an iron-dependent form of regulated cell death driven by lipid peroxidation, is increasingly recognized as a pivotal immunomodulatory mechanism within the tumor microenvironment (TME). Beyond its well-established role in tumor cell elimination, emerging evidence reveals that immune cell subsets exhibit distinct susceptibility to ferroptosis, with profound consequences for antitumor immunity. This review systematically delineates the dual and cell-type-specific roles of ferroptosis across innate and adaptive immune populations: while ferroptosis-mediated depletion of immunosuppress
