Programmatically Localizing Diabetic Retinopathy Features in 45-Degree Retinal Photographs Using Anatomical Colocation.

Background: The aim in this study was to investigate the localization of diabetic retinopathy features at the posterior pole. Methods: This study extracted diabetic retinopathy feature locations from 757 macula-centered 45-degree fundus photographs in the publicly available DDR dataset. Arteriole and venule locations were also extracted from the RITE (n = 35) and IOSTAR (n = 29) datasets. Images were normalized to collocate optic disc and macula positions, and feature positions were collated to generate a frequency distribution matrix. Sørensen-Dice coefficients were calculated to compare the

Pathological axonal enlargement in connection with amyloidosis, lysosome destabilization, and bleeding is a major defect in Alzheimer's disease.

JOURNAL/nrgr/04.03/01300535-202602000-00047/figure1/v/2025-05-05T160104Z/r/image-tiff Alzheimer's disease is a multi-amyloidosis disease characterized by amyloid-β deposits in brain blood vessels, microaneurysms, and senile plaques. How amyloid-β deposition affects axon pathology has not been examined extensively. We used immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence staining to analyze the forebrain tissue slices of Alzheimer's disease patients. Widespread axonal amyloidosis with distinctive axonal enlargement was observed in patients with Alzheimer's disease. On average, amyloid-β-positive axo

Characteristic morphological changes in anti-VEGF therapy-induced glomerular microangiopathy.

AIMS: Agents targeting vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) have increasingly been used for the treatment of advanced malignancies, and have been found to induce renal thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA) and proteinuria. However, histomorphological changes in human biopsies in this setting and the underlying mechanism are not yet fully understood. Therefore, we collected renal biopsy cases with a history of aVEGF therapy to review and compare morphological kidney changes in this context. METHODS AND RESULTS: Renal biopsies of 15 patients who had received anti-VEGF (aVEGF) therapy evaluated

Microvascular disease: what does the UKPDS tell us about diabetic retinopathy?

Background The UK Prospective Diabetes Study (UKPDS) was a randomised controlled clinical study which looked at the effect of improved blood glucose and blood pressure control on macro- and microvascular complications in Type 2 diabetes. Retinopathy was the commonest microvascular outcome and this paper looks at this complication. Methods Newly diagnosed diabetic patients were randomised to intensive or conventional glycaemic control and a subset of hypertensive patients to tight or less tight blood pressure control. Patients were seen every 3 months in study clinics and retinopathy was assess

Retinopathy in sickle cell trait: does it exist?

BACKGROUND: Patients with sickle cell trait and concomitant systemic disease are known to be at risk for proliferative retinopathy. However, there are reports of retinopathy in patients with sickle cell trait without systemic disease. There are no population-based studies addressing the risk of sickle cell retinopathy in this group. We performed a study to clarify the relation between sickle cell trait and retinopathy in healthy subjects. METHODS: We reviewed the medical records of 100 children with sickle cell disease who attended the Sickle Cell Clinic at the Hospital for Sick Children, Tor

Post-infantile giant cell hepatitis associated with autoimmune hepatitis and polyarteritis nodosa.

We report the case of a patient with corticosteroid-responsive giant cell hepatitis associated with typical manifestations and changes of polyarteritis nodosa from the kidney and central nervous system. Initially, the patient presented with transient right hemiparesis, followed by spontaneous remission without any abnormalities on computed tomography scan, magnetic resonance imaging and cerebrospinal fluid examination. A few months later he was admitted to our clinic because of icterus, peripheral oedema and abdominal distension. He was found to have clinical signs of active cirrhosis. Serolog

Effect of renovascular hypertension on experimental glomerulonephritis in rats.

Systemic hypertension is a major risk factor that determines the rate of progression of kidney disease. The underlying mechanisms, however, are incompletely understood. To gain insight into these mechanisms, the present study was undertaken to characterize the effects of renovascular hypertension on the course of anti-thymocyte antibody-induced glomerulonephritis. Glomerulonephritis was induced in rats 6 weeks after the initiation of two-kidney, one-clip hypertension, when blood pressure was already increased. Structure and function of the clipped and the nonclipped kidney were examined 5 days

Treatment of experimental mesangioproliferative glomerulonephritis with non-anticoagulant heparin: therapeutic efficacy and safety.

Treatment with conventional heparin is effective in experimental mesangioproliferative glomerulonephritis. However, the long-term effects and safety of this therapy, in particular in the presence of mesangiolysis, have not been assessed. In addition, this therapy has been hampered by bleeding complications. In the present study, therefore, we investigated the long-term effects of a short course of non-anticoagulant (NA) heparin treatment in the anti-Thy 1.1 mesangioproliferative glomerulonephritis, in which early immune-mediated mesangiolysis subsequently leads to mesangial hyperproliferation.

Adipose-derived mesenchymal stromal cells reverse high glucose-induced reduction of angiogenesis in human retinal microvascular endothelial cells.

BACKGROUND AIMS: Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is characterized by a progressive alteration of the retinal microvasculature, arising from microaneurysms to leaky vessels and finally abnormal neovascularization. The hyperglycemia-mediated loss of pericytes is a key event in vessel degeneration causing vascular destabilization. To overcome this, mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) have been tested as pericyte replacement in several animal models showing repair and regeneration of DR-damaged vasculature. METHODS: We hypothesized that adipose-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (ASCs) resist high glucose-

Diabetic brain or retina? Visual psychophysical performance in diabetic patients in relation to GABA levels in occipital cortex.

Visual impairment is one of the most feared complications of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. Here, we aimed to investigate the role of occipital cortex γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) as a predictor of visual performance in type 2 diabetes. 18 type 2 diabetes patients were included in a longitudinal prospective one-year study, as well as 22 healthy age-matched controls. We collected demographic data, HbA1C and used a novel set of visual psychophysical tests addressing color, achromatic luminance and speed discrimination in both groups. Psychophysical tests underwent dimension reduction with principle com

N-Terminal Pro-B-Type Natriuretic Peptide Is Related to Retinal Microvascular Damage: The Rotterdam Study.

OBJECTIVE: N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) is a marker of cardiac dysfunction and has been linked to various indices of large vessel disease. However, it remains unclear whether NT-proBNP also relates to microvascular damage. In a community-dwelling population, we studied the association between NT-proBNP and retinal microvascular damage. APPROACH AND RESULTS: From the population-based Rotterdam Study, we included 8437 participants (mean age 64.1 years and 59% women) without a history of cardiovascular disease, with NT-proBNP data and gradable retinal images.
