Videotape-based decision aid for colon cancer screening. A randomized, controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Rates of colon cancer screening in the United States are low, in part because of poor communication between patients and providers about the availability of effective screening options. OBJECTIVE: To test whether a decision aid consisting of an educational video, targeted brochure, and chart marker increased performance of colon cancer screening in primary care practices. DESIGN: Randomized, controlled trial. SETTING: Three community primary care practices in central North Carolina. PATIENTS: 1657 consecutive adult patients 50 to 75 years of age were contacted. Of these, 651 (3

Using focus group methods to develop multicultural cancer pain education materials.

Methods to treat cancer pain effectively have existed for more than 2 decades. However, the effective treatment of cancer pain continues to elude many patients with cancer who suffer from poor management. Although efforts to address the problem of cancer pain in the United States have acknowledged the importance of patient education and advocacy, few endeavors, to date, have attended to the special needs of inner-city, low-literacy, or socioeconomically disadvantaged patients from minority cultural groups. From 1992 to 1995, the Boston Cancer Pain Education Program, funded by the National Canc

Implementing a Parental Anxiety Reduction Protocol (PARP) in the Perioperative Period.

PURPOSE: Parents and children often experience anxiety when a child undergoes a surgical procedure. Parental anxiety may influence the child's perioperative experience and has been associated with increased child anxiety, which is linked to adverse postoperative outcomes, including an increased incidence of postoperative delirium, higher pain scores, and a greater need for intraoperative analgesia. The effects of untreated preoperative anxiety may extend beyond the immediate perioperative period and contribute to maladaptive behaviors at home. The purpose of this project was to implement and e

Applying Regulatory Focus Theory to Encourage Weight Loss in a Self-directed Intervention.

BACKGROUND: Regulatory focus theory proposes two self-regulatory systems: promotion focus-related to fulfilling aspirations and maximizing positive outcomes-and prevention focus-related to fulfilling responsibilities and avoiding negative outcomes. Building on research demonstrating associations between regulatory focus and weight outcomes, a proof-of-concept weight control intervention framed intervention procedures in terms of promotion or prevention focus and descriptively examined whether the impact of the intervention conditions depended on dispositional regulatory focus. METHODS: After

Nurse‑led horticultural activities as an early intervention for mild‑to‑moderate depressive symptoms among youth in Hong Kong: an exploratory randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Studies have revealed an increasing prevalence of depressive symptoms among youth globally, including in Hong Kong, posing a serious threat to their mental health and quality of life. While it has been shown that horticultural activities are promising for reducing depressive symptoms in adults and older populations, their effectiveness among youth—particularly in Chinese communities—remains underexplored. This study examined the feasibility, applicability and effectiveness of horticultural activities in reducing depressive symptoms among Hong Kong youth, as well as reducing anxiety

The Effects of Stepping Exercise on Blood Pressure, Physical Performance, and Quality of Life in Female Older Adults with Stage 1 Hypertension: a Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Hypertension is a common disease, particularly in older adults. In a previous study, we found that an eight-week course of stepping exercise improved physical performance in healthy older adults as measured using the six-minute walk test (468 vs. 426 m in controls; p = .01). This study aims to further evaluate the effects of stepping exercise on blood pressure, physical performance, and quality of life in older adults with stage 1 hypertension. METHODS: This was a randomized, controlled trial comparing older adults with stage 1 hypertension who performed stepping exercise with con

Evaluation of a health promotion intervention for skin cancer prevention in Spain: the SolSano program.

The incidence of skin cancer is increasing worldwide, and Spain is no exception. SolSano is the first Spanish health education program for sun safety directed at elementary school children. The objective was to evaluate SolSano's effects on students' knowledge, attitudes and practices about sun safety. A non-randomized, before/after, community intervention without control group, with schools as the unit of intervention, was used for the study. Five thousand eight hundred and forty-five children from 215 Aragonese Primary Schools (Grades 1-2) participated in the program in their classes during

Combining CRP testing and patient information leaflets to safely reduce antibiotic use for acute respiratory tract infections in adults: Protocol for the 2CARE randomised controlled trial in Kyrgyz primary care.

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a major health challenge in Kyrgyzstan, where acute respiratory tract infections (ARTIs) are common and frequently treated with antibiotics. Although C-reactive protein (CRP) point-of-care testing can support rational prescribing, there is no consensus on safe CRP thresholds for adults. Patient information leaflets (PILs) may further reduce inappropriate antibiotic use by improving understanding of ARTIs and addressing expectations for antibiotics. The 2CARE trial evaluates whether combining PILs with CRP testing can safely reduce antibiotic use am

Communicating 5-Year Risk of Alzheimer's Disease Dementia: Development and Evaluation of Materials that Incorporate Multiple Genetic and Biomarker Research Results.

BACKGROUND: Cognitively normal (CN) older adults participating in Alzheimer's disease (AD) research increasingly ask for their research results-including genetic and neuroimaging findings-to understand their risk of developing AD dementia. AD research results are typically not returned for multiple reasons, including possible psychosocial harms of knowing one is at risk of a highly feared and untreatable disease. OBJECTIVE: We developed materials that convey information about 5-year absolute risk of developing AD dementia based on research results. METHODS: 20 CN older adults who received a

Comparing the effect of a leaflet and a movie in preventing tick bites and Lyme disease in The Netherlands.

BACKGROUND: Lyme disease (LD) has become the most common vector borne illness in the Northern hemisphere. Prevention relies predominantly on fostering protective behaviors (e.g., avoiding tick areas, using protective clothing and repellent, and doing routine tick checks post-exposure). The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness (in terms of knowledge, perceived severity and susceptibility, self-efficacy, response efficacy, intention, and behavior over time) and appreciation of a leaflet and a movie as tools for informing the public in the Netherlands about ticks and LD prote

Education on tick bite and Lyme borreliosis prevention, aimed at schoolchildren in the Netherlands: comparing the effects of an online educational video game versus a leaflet or no intervention.

BACKGROUND: Lyme disease or Lyme borreliosis (LB) is the most common tick-borne disease both in the United States and Europe. Children, in particular, are at high risk of contracting LB. Since child-specific educational tools on ticks, tick bites and LB are lacking, we developed an online educational video game. In this study, we compared the effectiveness of an online educational video game versus a newly developed leaflet aimed to improve prevention of tick bites and LB among Dutch schoolchildren. METHODS: A total of 887 children, aged 9-13 years and attending the two final years of primary

Enhancing self-care implementation and reducing marker detachment rates in cancer radiotherapy patients through diverse nursing care strategies.

OBJECTIVES: During radiation therapy, clear and stable body-surface markers are essential for accurate patient positioning. Peer benchmarking across four Taiwanese tertiary centers (January 2023-Mar 2024) revealed marker detachment rates of 0.8%-10.7%, whereas our in-house audit documented 15%, underscoring a significant quality gap (unpublished institutional quality assurance data). Marker detachment or fading commonly occurs due to daily activities, hygiene routines, and patient-specific factors, adversely affecting treatment accuracy, prolonging treatment duration, and increasing patient an
