[Effects of pulpal inflammation on the activities of periodontal mechanoreceptive afferent fibers].

Response properties of periodontal single afferents were investigated in cats with inflammatory irritant-induced pulpitis. A deep dentin cavity was prepared on the right mandibular canine in order to apply an inflammatory agent and small fiber excitant, allyl-isothiocyanate (mustard oil: MO), and single afferents innervating the canine periodontal mechanoreceptor were dissected from the mandibular nerve bundle by examining impulse responses while applying mechanical stimuli to the tip of the crown. Evoked impulses by mechanical stimuli were increased in number for 15 minutes with MO applicatio

A historical glimpse of toothpick use: etiquette, oral and medical conditions.

This article traces various historical and geographical aspects of multicultural toothpick use, dating back from prehistoric times to the present. This behavior appears to be one of the oldest and best documented of all human habits. Toothpicks (composed of bone, ivory, metal, plastic, quills, wood or other substances) have been used for ceremonial, oral hygiene and religious purposes. Throughout the ages, the act of toothpicking has been both encouraged and discouraged. In the 19-20th centuries, it was generally viewed as a disgusting breach of social etiquette and a significant threat to ora

A comparison of the supra-alveolar pulp size of impeded and unimpeded mandibular rat incisors using micro-computed tomography.

The pulp space is almost totally obliterated in the incisal end of a mandibular rat incisor. Repeated shortening of the incisor has been shown to increase the pulp space below the alveolar bone level; however, little is known about that above the alveolar bone level. This study investigated the changes in the pulp space superior to the bone level after rendering the incisor unimpeded for a period of three weeks. A desktop micro-computed tomography scanning unit, which is non-invasive, non-destructive, accurate, less technique sensitive and less time consuming than conventional methods, was use

Current trends in gingival recession coverage--part I: the tunnel connective tissue graft.

The recession of the gingiva is increasingly becoming a more prominent condition in the oral health of many patients and should be treated at its earliest detection. The multifactorial etiology, decision modality, and current trends followed in the treatment of gingival recession are discussed in this presentation. The correction of Class I and II gingival recessions are presented as a means of minimizing surgical trauma and achieving predictable aesthetic results. Part II of this discussion will present alternative techniques in treating gingival recession.

In vitro effects of a chlorhexidine controlled delivery system.

INTRODUCTION: Small bowel varices are a rare manifestation of portal hypertension, accounting for only 1-5% of variceal gastrointestinal bleeding. Their diagnosis and management remain challenging because of their uncommon occurrence, difficult anatomical accessibility, and lack of standardized treatment strategies. We report a case of refractory small bowel variceal bleeding successfully treated with splenic artery embolization after failure of conventional therapeutic options. CASE PRESENTATION: A 45-year-old man with liver cirrhosis, cholangiocarcinoma with bone metastases, ulcerative coli

Postoperative sensitivity of composites using novel Bacillus subtilis nanofortified adhesives: a triple-blind study.

UNLABELLED: NANOTECHNOLOGY: is the art and science of dealing with nanoscale particles. This has transformed contemporary dental practices through myriad contributions to biomaterial science. Titanium dioxide nanoparticles procured from Bacillus subtilis, an eco-friendly and biogenic source, can significantly magnify the physiochemical attributes of dental materials. However, postoperative sensitivity is a major drawback of composite restorations. The incorporation of these nanoparticles into dental adhesives can greatly benefit clinical dentistry by resolving this issue. This trial aimed to e

Uses of sodium fluoride varnish in dental practice.

Fluoride varnish is developed to prolong the contact time between fluoride and tooth surface, so that the tooth becomes more resistant to caries attack. The active ingredient of fluoride varnish is usually 5% sodium fluoride, (22,600 ppm fluoride). Studies have found that fairly insoluble globules of calcium fluoride-like material formed on the tooth surface after topical fluoride application. These globules act as a reservoir of fluoride in the mouth for a prolonged period of time. Systematic reviews corroborate evidence for the efficacy of fluoride varnish in the prevention of dental caries.

Structure and mechanical properties of Ank/Ank mutant mouse dental tissues--an animal model for studying periodontal regeneration.

Enamel, dentine and cementum are dental tissues with distinct functional properties associated with their unique hierarchical structures. Some potential ways to repair or regenerate lost tooth structures have been revealed in our studies focused on examining teeth obtained from mice with mutations at the mouse progressive ankylosis (ank) locus. Previous studies have shown that mice with such mutations have decreased levels of extracellular inorganic pyrophosphate (PP(i)) at local sites resulting in ectopic calcification in joint areas and in formation of a significantly thicker cementum layer

Molar Incisor Hypomineralisation as a Dental Caries Risk Factor - Is It True?

The development of the human dentition is susceptible to disruption owing to its intricate and delicate nature, encompassing variations in tooth number, anatomical configuration, and the characteristics of enamel, dentine, and cementum. This chapter will specifically address the prevalent defect of molar incisor hypomineralisation (MIH), which can impose a significant treatment burden on individuals. MIH is linked to deleterious alterations in the properties of affected enamel, which can lead to rapid enamel breakdown and carious lesion formation in those at a heightened caries risk. In additi
