Environmental signaling: what embryos and evolution teach us about endocrine disrupting chemicals.

The term "endocrine disrupting chemicals" is commonly used to describe environmental agents that alter the endocrine system. Laboratories working in this emerging field-environmental endocrine research-have looked at chemicals that mimic or block endogenous vertebrate steroid hormones by interacting with the hormone's receptor. Environmental chemicals known to do this do so most often with receptors derived from the steroid/thyroid/retinoid gene family. They include ubiquitous and persistent organochlorines, as well as plasticizers, pharmaceuticals, and natural hormones. These chemicals functi

[Immunological aspects of the clinical pathogenesis of the inflammatory processes of the adnexa uteri].

Immunological aspects are highlighted of origination and course of chronic inflammatory process. The presented data show that a chronic inflammatory process originates and is maintained at the expense of disturbances in one or several components of the immune system realizing defence of the body against infections, and if these failures are not detected this can be due to inadequate methodological approaches or because of impossibility of identifying the existing inadequacy at the present stage of development of science. The existing congenital failures of immunity compensated by activation of

Bridging Respiratory Exposures, Asthma, and Environmental Health in Corpus Christi (BREATHE-CC): a prospective cohort study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Childhood asthma disproportionately affects Hispanic children in the United States. Nevertheless, few longitudinal cohorts exist in Gulf Coast communities where environmental exposures may compound sociodemographic vulnerabilities. Corpus Christi, a majority-Hispanic city with high levels of petrochemical industrial operations, reports higher asthma prevalence than state and national averages. BREATHE-CC (Bridging Respiratory Exposures, Asthma, and Environmental Health in Corpus Christi) is a prospective cohort designed to investigate the role of air pollutants, household condition

Environmental causes of breast cancer and radiation from medical imaging: findings from the Institute of Medicine report.

Susan G. Komen for the Cure asked the Institute of Medicine (IOM) to perform a comprehensive review of environmental causes and risk factors for breast cancer. Interestingly, none of the consumer products (ie, bisphenol A, phthalates), industrial chemicals (ie, benzene, ethylene oxide), or pesticides (ie, DDT/DDE) considered could be conclusively linked to an increased risk of breast cancer, although the IOM acknowledged that the available evidence was insufficient to draw firm conclusions for many of these exposures, calling for more research in these areas. The IOM found sufficient evidence

Gout: one year in review 2025.

The incidence of gout has increased steadily over the last decades and its management is still unsatisfactory. Growing evidence highlights the multifactorial etiology of this disease encompassing genetic predisposition, environmental stimuli and gut dysbiosis. Recent advances in biomolecular and computer sciences allowed to gain more and more genetic, epigenetic, transcriptomic, proteomics and metabolomics insights into hyperuricaemia and gout-related molecular mechanisms. Moreover, the interplay between gout and cardiovascular, metabolic and renal diseases may potentially offer novel targets

Photochemical Benzylation of White Phosphorus.

Organophosphorus compounds (OPCs) have wide application in organic synthesis, material sciences, and drug discovery. Generally, the vast majority of phosphorus atoms in OPCs are derived from white phosphorus (P4). However, the large-scale preparation of OPCs mainly proceeds through the multistep and environmentally toxic chlorine route from P4. Herein, we report the direct benzylation of P4 promoted by visible light. The cheap and readily available benzyl bromide was used as a benzylation reagent, and tetrabenzylphosphonium bromide was directly synthesized from P4. In addition, the metallaphot

Microplastics across marine food webs: bioaccumulation, exposome interactions, and emerging oncogenic risks.

Microplastic pollution is a major environmental problem affecting ecosystems, wildlife and people worldwide. Microplastics are solid synthetic polymer particles > 5 mm, insoluble in water and potentially containing functional additives and adsorbed chemical contaminants. They originate from bulk industrial products and from the degradation of large plastic debris (EFSA CONTAM Panel, in EFSA Journal 14, 2016). The extent of the contamination is critical, with global plastic production projected to exceed 1.2 billion metric tons per year by 2060 and an estimated 170 trillion plastic particles in

Advancing application of satellite remote sensing technologies for linking atmospheric and built environment to health.

BACKGROUND: The intricate interplay between human well-being and the surrounding environment underscores contemporary discourse. Within this paradigm, comprehensive environmental monitoring holds the key to unraveling the intricate connections linking population health to environmental exposures. The advent of satellite remote sensing monitoring (SRSM) has revolutionized traditional monitoring constraints, particularly limited spatial coverage and resolution. This innovation finds profound utility in quantifying land covers and air pollution data, casting new light on epidemiological and geogr

Rational decisions or moral obligations? A systematic review of TPB-NAM integration in understanding low-carbon behavior.

OBJECTIVE: Understanding low-carbon behavior remains a significant challenge due to the complexity of environmental decision-making and the persistent intention-behavior gap. While the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) and the Norm Activation Model (NAM) are among the most widely applied frameworks for explaining environmental behavior, studies increasingly integrate these theories to capture both rational and moral dimensions of decision-making. This study systematically reviews TPB-NAM integration research to identify major research trends, theoretical integration approaches, and implications

Climate Change and Its Impact on Ocular Health: A Systematic Review.

Climate change has emerged as a pressing public health concern, with growing evidence that its environmental impacts extend to ocular health. Rising ultraviolet (UV) radiation, deteriorating air quality, and extreme weather events contribute to both acute and chronic eye diseases. This systematic review examines existing literature linking climate-related environmental exposures to ocular disorders, focusing on cataract formation, dry eye disease (DED), and meteorologically induced ocular surface instability. It also identifies at-risk populations and research gaps to inform clinical and polic
