Phytochemical characterisation and bioprospection for antibacterial and antioxidant activities of Lippia alba Brown ex Britton & Wilson (Verbenaceae).

Ethanol extract and fractions obtained from fresh and dry aerial parts of Lippia alba were examined in order to determine their phytochemical composition, antioxidant capacity and antibacterial activities. The ethanol extracts and fractions exhibited an antioxidant effect by the DPPH assay, especially samples of fresh plant. HPLC analysis of the ethyl acetate fractions identified the presence of phenolic acids and flavonoids. The ethanol extract and fractions showed activity against reference and multidrug-resistant strains of Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococcus faecalis (MIC range 2000-250

Carbon tetrachloride-induced nephrotoxicity in rats: protective role of Digera muricata.

Digera muricata is used in renal disorders in folk medicine. Generation of reactive radicals has been implicated in carbon tetrachloride-induced nephrotoxicity, which are involved in lipid peroxidation, accumulation of dysfunctional proteins, leading to injuries in kidneys. The present study was aimed to evaluate the efficacy of Digera muricata on the kidney function in CCl(4)-induced injuries. CCl(4) treatment (5 ml/kg body wt., i.p. CCl(4):olive oil; 1:9) significantly increased the level of urine creatinine, protein, nitrite, urobilinogen, red blood cells (RBCs), leucocytes count, and level

Prenylated dihydrostilbenoid derivatives from the aerial parts of Glycyrrhiza uralensis and their potent antibacterial activity against drug-resistant clinical isolates.

A phytochemical investigation of the aerial parts of Glycyrrhiza uralensis led to the isolation of thirteen previously undescribed compounds (1-13), comprising one dihydrophenanthrene, prenyluralensol A, and twelve dihydrostilbenoids, prenyluralensols B-M, together with seven known analogues (14-20). Their structures were established by extensive spectroscopic analyses and electronic circular dichroism calculations. Compound 1 is noteworthy as the first example of a dihydrophenanthrene derivative incorporating three pyran rings. The antimicrobial evaluation showed that seven compounds (3, 7, 8

Antiulcer activity of Cyperus alternifolius in relation to its UPLC-MS metabolite fingerprint: A mechanistic study.

BACKGROUND: Gastric ulcer is one of the main prevalent gastrointestinal multi-etiological disorders with many associated complications and adverse effects. Our aim was to develop safer antiulcer therapies based on methanol or ethyl acetate extracts of tubers and aerial parts from Cyperus alternifolius. METHODS: Gastric ulceration was experimentally generated by administration of single oral doses of indomethacin (30 mg/kg) to fasted rats. The animals received methanol or ethyl acetate extracts of C. alternifolius tuber and methanol or ethyl acetate extracts of aerial parts at two dose levels

Biological Activities and Phytochemical Composition of Arum rupicola var. rupicola: An In Vitro and In Silico Study.

The phytochemical composition and biological activities of extracts obtained from the aerial parts (ARA), fruits (ARF), and rhizomes (ARR) of Arum rupicola var. rupicola (Araceae) were investigated using in vitro and in silico approaches. Phenolic and volatile profiles were characterized by HPLC and GC/MS. Antioxidant (DPPH), antimicrobial (MIC), and cytotoxic (MTT) activities were evaluated. Molecular docking, MM-GBSA, and ADME analyses were performed using Schrödinger Maestro. HPLC revealed that rutin (35,001 µg/mL) and coumaric acid (13,145 µg/mL) were the dominant phenolics in ARA, while q

This study investigated the antioxidant properties and enzyme-inhibitory activities of Cousinia cirsioides extracts and sub-extracts, along with their phytochemical composition. In this study, the aerial parts of C. cirsioides were extracted with 70% methanol and fractionated into n-hexane, ethyl acetate (CSE), n-butanol, and water sub-extracts. Enzyme inhibition activities were tested against α-amylase, α-glucosidase, acetylcholinesterase (AChE), butyrylcholinesterase (BChE), and tyrosinase. Antioxidant capacities were evaluated using DPPH, ABTS, FRAP, and CUPRAC assays. TPC, TFC and LC-HRMS

Chemical composition and anti-osteoarthritis potential of Lolium perenne L. assisted with computational studies.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a serious health issue that lacks a totally effective treatment. In light of the critical need for alternative therapies to halt osteoarthritis and its progress, This study explores the potential of Lolium perenne as a treatment for osteoarthritis for the first time. The research evaluates the plant's protective effects against monosodium iodoacetate (MIA)-induced OA in rats. 24 rats were assigned into 4 groups, group I (sham control), group II (OA), group III (dichloromethane fraction (FrII) + OA), and group IV (ethyl acetate fraction (FrIII) + OA). For 21 days, the sam

PURPOSE: Zhumeria majdae, a unique species of the Zhumeria genus, is an endemic Iranian plant in the Lamiaceae family. Phytochemical investigation and biological activity of this plant are rarely reported. The current study aimed to find new antiprotozoal compounds from the roots of Z. majdae and to determine the absolute configuration of isolated compounds by circular dichroism. METHODS: The extraction process from roots and aerial parts of Z. majdae was carried out by hexane, ethyl acetate and methanol followed by testing their antiprotozoal effects against Leishmania donovani, Trypanosoma

Cardenolide-rich fraction of Pergularia tomentosa as a novel Antiangiogenic agent mainly targeting endothelial cell migration.

PURPOSE: Angiogenesis related abnormalities underlie several life-threatening disorders. Despite approved therapies, scientists have yet to develop highly efficient, low cost approaches with minimal side effects. METHODS: We evaluated the antiangiogenic activity of 50% hydroalcoholic extracts of Pergularia tomentosa L. root and aerial parts along with their EtOAc and water fractions, in vivo and in vitro. Transgenic zebrafish line Tg(fli1:EGFP) was used for in vivo assay and human umbilical vein endothelial cell (HUVEC) migration test along with possibility of tube formation were performed as

Identification of new potent inhibitor of aldose reductase from Ocimum basilicum.

Recent efforts to develop cure for chronic diabetic complications have led to the discovery of potent inhibitors against aldose reductase (AKR1B1, EC 1.1.1.21) whose role in diabetes is well-evident. In the present work, two new natural products were isolated from the ariel part of Ocimum basilicum; 7-(3-hydroxypropyl)-3-methyl-8-β-O-d-glucoside-2H-chromen-2-one (1) and E-4-(6'-hydroxyhex-3'-en-1-yl)phenyl propionate (2) and confirmed their structures with different spectroscopic techniques including NMR spectroscopy etc. The isolated compounds (1, 2) were evaluated for in vitro inhibitory act

Antitumor potential of pacific plant extracts revealed using tumor spheroids and untargeted metabolomics.

BACKGROUND: The discovery of novel antitumor compounds remains a pressing need to address the global burden of cancer, particularly to fight treatment resistance and the lack of specificity of conventional therapies. The terrestrial flora from New Caledonia (NC), a biodiversity hotspot in the South Pacific, represents a rich and largely underexplored source of candidate antitumor natural products (NPs). PURPOSE: This study aimed to identify the most potent antitumor extracts among a selection of plants from the terrestrial flora of NC and to further characterize their pharmacological potentia
