BACKGROUND: Many studies in Western countries point to the high prevalence of HIV infection in groups of prostitutes especially among those using intravenous drugs (IVDA). Furthermore, there appears to be a low but increasing number of heterosexually infected prostitutes.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was carried out in a sample of 374 prostitutes selected by collaborating groups in 11 provinces with the aim of studying the prevalence of HIV and its associated risk factors in Spanish prostitutes. Furthermore, the prevalence of other sexually transmitted diseases (HIV-2, HTLV-I/II, hepatiti

This report presents the results of a survey conducted between February and April 1988 to ascertain Ugandans' perception of AIDS as a problem, their knowledge of the disease and how it is spread, the resultant change in their sexual behaviour and their knowledge of, and attitudes towards, condoms. Two hundred and four people (98 women, 106 men) were interviewed from three locations; Kampala (an area with a high incidence of AIDS), Kabale, a town in central Kigezi, and villages in North Kigezi (both relatively low incidence areas). The main points to emerge are: (1) all the respondents were awa

In a statistical sample of 500 unwanted pregnancies surprisingly the share of women whose partners used a condom was not higher than the share of IUP-users (considering the relative frequency of use of both methods). This result was the motivation to investigate once more the use of the condom. After a short description of the history, the production, and the testing methods a discussion follows of the frequency of its use. In many countries the frequency of using the condom lies between that of hormonal oral contraceptives and the IUP. Today the reliability of the condom is higher than descri

OBJECTIVES: To assess the knowledge, attitudes and practices of general practitioners in New South Wales regarding the provision of emergency contraception.
DESIGN: Randomised group comparison of 100 rural and 100 urban general practitioners (GPs) by questionnaire.
RESULTS: Eighty-four rural and 76 urban GPs responded. More rural GPs were knowledgeable about emergency contraception than urban GPs (95% v. 78%), and more women knew about it than men. More urban GPs frequently prescribed emergency contraception than rural GPs (26% v. 6%) and female GPs prescribed it more readily than male GPs (

In a study of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1)-uninfected African prostitutes, 83 (67%) of 124 seroconverted to HIV-1. Oral contraceptive use (odds ratio [OR], 3.1; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.1-8.6; P less than .03), genital ulcers (mean annual episodes, 1.32 +/- 0.55 in seroconverting women vs. 0.48 +/- 0.21 in seronegative women; P less than .02) and Chlamydia trachomatis infections (OR, 3.6; CI, 1.3-11.0; P less than .02) were associated with increased risk of HIV-1 infection. Condom use reduced the risk of HIV-1 infection (OR, 0.11; CI, 0.05-0.27; P less than .0001). Stepwi

In order to assess women's self-perception of their risk of infection by HIV, research was performed among 654 women who had consulted in a family planning centre in the Paris region. Of the 452 (69%) women who took part in this research, 77% considered themselves as 'not at risk of carrying the AIDS virus', 11% as 'at risk' and 12% did not give a specific answer. The most important risk factors noted by the patient and the doctor were found to be the number of partners, the use of syringes and the non- or faulty use of condoms. Estimates of the risk of infection by physicians had a high corre

To determine correlates of condom use in adolescent males, we administered a sexual behavior questionnaire to 105 urban males attending a general adolescent clinic. The mean age was 16.5 +/- 1.6 years, and all reported heterosexual activity during the prior 3 months. Condom use was significantly (p less than 0.05) associated with perceived hassle of use (Spearman's rho = -0.40), perception of girlfriend's attitude toward condoms (rho = -0.36), self-confidence in correct use (rho = 0.26), younger age (rho = 0.25), reported degree of exposure to sexually transmitted disease (STD) education (rho

A survey examined health beliefs and intentions among 690 16-18 year-olds in Dundee. Respondents in the younger cohort (n = 363) were classified according to their educational situation (at school vs left) and self-reports of having received AIDS/HIV-relevant health education. Both remaining in school and receiving AIDS/HIV-relevant health education had independent beneficial effects, but the effects of leaving school also interacted with sex of respondent and with amount of relevant education received prior to leaving. Males' and females' reliance on mass media and other information sources d

A study was conducted with 261 community residents, college students, and intravenous drug users to investigate perceived effectiveness of fear appeals in AIDS education posters. Experimental posters with high-fear pictures portraying severe consequences of AIDS and low-fear posters that were neutral regarding disease severity were evaluated in terms of their perceived effectiveness in motivating people to use condoms. Posters also contained written messages communicating high and low levels of personal vulnerability and response efficacy. High-severity/fear posters were rated as significantly

During 1988 self-report data were elicited from a study of 102 male and 103 female sex workers (prostitutes) in Edinburgh. Respondents were contacted by 'snowballing', mostly in licensed premises. This was reflected by high levels of self-reported alcohol and illicit drug use. Respondents reported that both alcohol and illicit drug use were commonplace in relation to their work and that many of their clients were under alcohol or drug effect at the time of contact. Condom use was unrelated to sex workers' alcohol or drug use, but was significantly associated with sex workers' assessments of th

OBJECTIVE: Higher than expected pregnancy rates have been observed in HIV related clinical trials in Sub-Saharan Africa. We designed a qualitative study to explore the factors contributing to high pregnancy rates among participants in two HIV clinical trials in Sub-Saharan Africa.
METHODS: Female and male participants enrolled in one of two clinical HIV trials in south-west Uganda were approached. The trials were a phase III microbicide efficacy trial among HIV negative women using vaginal gel (MDP); and a trial of primary prevention prophylaxis for invasive cryptococcal disease using flucona

PURPOSE: Several randomized, controlled trials (RCTs) have tested strategies to prevent sexual acquisition of HIV infection, but their quality has been variable. We aimed to identify, describe, and evaluate the quality of RCTs studying biomedical interventions to prevent HIV acquisition by sexual transmission.
METHOD: We conducted a systematic review to identify all RCTs evaluating the efficacy of biomedical HIV prevention interventions. We assessed seven generic and content-specific quality components important in HIV prevention trials, factors influencing study power, co-interventions provi

From June 1981 through December 1991, 34% of all reported cases of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) among women in the United States were attributed to heterosexual transmission, and that proportion has been increasing steadily (1). Factors associated with an increased risk for heterosexual transmission include unprotected sexual intercourse (2), multiple sex partners, and the presence of other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) (1). Women who have been surgically sterilized and who are sexually active and/or use injecting drugs may need the same prevention services for human immuno

Methadone maintenance patients are at risk of contracting or transmitting HIV through intravenous drug use and/or unsafe sexual practices. An outcome evaluation of a voluntary AIDS prevention program for methadone patients in three clinics (two experimental, one control) is reported. The prevention program included three components: didactic AIDS education, HIV antibody counseling/testing, and facilitated peer support groups. Participation in AIDS education was associated with increased knowledge of AIDS risks and with improved attitudes toward condoms. Peer group participation was associated

Given challenges with adherence to existing HIV prevention products, the development of an extended duration vaginal ring could improve adherence while reducing patient and provider burden. Additionally, women have other interlinked sexual health concerns such as unintended pregnancy. We evaluated acceptability of a 90-day ring to prevent HIV and hypothetical preferences for a dual (HIV and contraceptive) indication. This was a secondary analysis of a Phase 1, two-arm, multi-site, placebo-controlled randomized trial evaluating safety and pharmacokinetics of a 90-day vaginal ring containing ten

The retention of a foreign body during a surgical procedure or the inadvertent migration of an implant are rare but potentially harmful complications. Especially in the case of the former, the legal situation is unequivocal. Nevertheless, the uncomplicated removal and limitation of the operative trauma may be in the interest of the surgeon. We report and illustrate 2 patients in whom the use of intra-operative ultrasound resulted in the safe and elective removal of an intracranial drill tip in one patient and a contraceptive implant located in the ulnar nerve sheath in the other.
