Two Case Reports of Isolated Intramuscular Cysticercosis: An Uncommon Pediatric Pseudotumor.

Taenia solium, the pig tapeworm, produces larvae that cause cysticercosis, a common parasitic disease of the human nervous system including the brain. The disease is native to countries like Central and South America, Eastern Europe, Africa, India, and Indonesia. Cysticercosis is endemic in North India, particularly in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Punjab. Asymptomatic cysts may have a history of trauma, while lower extremity involvement is less common. Isolated muscle involvement typically has no lethal consequences. Two cases, both pediatric, were diagnosed with intramuscular cysticercosis witho

Consensus guidelines on the management of musculoskeletal infection affecting children in the UK.

AIMS: The aim of this study was to determine the consensus best practice approach for the investigation and management of children (aged 0 to 15 years) in the UK with musculoskeletal infection (including septic arthritis, osteomyelitis, pyomyositis, tenosynovitis, fasciitis, and discitis). This consensus can then be used to ensure consistent, safe care for children in UK hospitals and those elsewhere with similar healthcare systems. METHODS: A Delphi approach was used to determine consensus in three core aspects of care: 1) assessment, investigation, and diagnosis; 2) treatment; and 3) servic

Streptococcus pneumoniae skin and soft tissue infections: characterization of causative strains and clinical illness.

Streptococcus pneumoniae is an uncommon cause of skin and soft tissue infections, yet the incidence and clinical significance of its isolation in samples of skin or soft tissues in unselected hospital samples is poorly understood. In the present study, a review was conducted of the records of all patients with skin and soft tissue infections due to S. pneumoniae at a university hospital between January 1994 and December 2005. The isolates were identified by standard methods and were serotyped, and susceptibility testing was performed by the broth microdilution method following the guidelines o

Skin and soft tissue infections in injection drug users.

Skin and soft tissue infections are the most common cause for hospital admission of injection drug users. Cutaneous and subcutaneous abscesses are the most frequent type of SSTI and occur most commonly when drug users are no longer able to inject intravenously and resort to injection directly into skin or muscle. Abscesses may be difficult to differentiate from uncomplicated cellulitis or may be confused with pseudoaneurysms, hematoma, phlegmon, or thrombosed vein. Special studies, including ultrasonography; CT scans, and MR imaging; or careful incision and inspection may be necessary to clari

Maggot debridement therapy and complementary wound care: a case series from Nigeria.

OBJECTIVE: Maggot debridement therapy (MDT) is an emerging procedure involving the application of sterile maggots of the Dipteran species (commonly Lucilia sericata) to effect debridement, disinfection and promote healing in wounds not responding to antimicrobial therapy. Data on MDT in sub-Saharan Africa (including Nigeria) are scarce. This study aimed to use medicinal grade maggots as a complementary method to debride hard-to-heal necrotic ulcers and thereby promote wound healing. METHOD: In this descriptive study, we reported on the first group of patients who had MDT at Aminu Kano Teachin

Aspergillus myofasciitis in a chronic granulomatous disease patient: first case report.

Aspergillus myofasciitis is a rare infection of the muscles and their fascial sheaths that has been reported in patients with immune deficiencies of various kinds but, until now, not with chronic granulomatous disease (CGD). Patients affected by CGD are at high risk of invasive aspergillus infections. The case described involves a 14-year-old boy with a severe autosomal recessive CGD who was admitted to hospital with an Aspergillus myofasciitis of the left forearm. He was treated with liposomal amphotericin for 14 days and then with oral voriconazole for three months with an excellent clinical
