Idiopathic Subglottic Stenosis: Improving Diagnosis and Awareness.

Background  Idiopathic subglottic stenosis is a rare condition characterized by a constriction of the airway passage without a known cause. While there may be many contributing factors, no definitive etiology has been established. Due to its rarity, this condition is frequently overlooked by healthcare providers, resulting in an inaccurate and lengthy diagnosis process. This results in detrimental effects for the patient given the symptoms of progressive dyspnea. Our objective was to retrospectively review patients diagnosed with idiopathic subglottic stenosis and analyze key characteristics a

Effect of stroboscopic vision on single leg hop for distance performance in athletes after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction: a case-control study.

OBJECTIVES: Following an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury, athletes may become more reliant on their vision to maintain postural control. Wearing stroboscopic glasses, which intermittently disrupt visual input, can result in decreased vision. However, it remains unclear whether this affects single-leg hopping distance in athletes after ACL reconstruction (ACLR). DESIGN: Case-control study. SETTING: Sports physiotherapy clinics and sports clubs. PARTICIPANTS: Athletes (Tegner-score >5) who were (mean (standard deviation)) 16.9 (4.6) months after ACLR (n = 17, age:24.7 (4.6) years), an

Vocal fold surgery of benign inflammatory lesions of Reinke's space: an outcome study in 47 subjects.

Phonosurgery should lead to a better voice quality and a better quality of life. Only a few studies report outcome of phonosurgery in terms of stroboscopic, perceptual, aerodynamic, acoustic and self-rating data. The protocol as proposed by the European Laryngological Society (ELS; Dejonckere et al. in Arch Otorhinolaryngol 258:77-82, 2001) complies with this condition. A group of 47 patients who underwent phonosurgery was pre- and postoperatively assessed by means of the ELS protocol in order to evaluate postoperative outcome. Analysis of the data showed a significant improvement for all dime

Pitch elevation in trangendered patients: anterior glottic web formation assisted by temporary injection augmentation.

UNLABELLED: Pitch elevation surgery is most often indicated to assist male-to-female transgendered individuals seeking a more feminine voice quality. Behavioral therapy is primary management but if the desired voice quality is not achieved, surgery is offered. Procedures described that raise vocal pitch alter one or more of the main parameters known to physiologically control pitch; vocal fold tension, length, and mass. OBJECTIVE: Web formation with injection augmentation significantly raises vocal pitch in male-to-female transgendered individuals. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. T

Voice production mechanisms following phonosurgical treatment of early glottic cancer.

OBJECTIVES: Although near-normal conversational voices can be achieved with the phonosurgical management of early glottic cancer, there are still acoustic and aerodynamic deficits in vocal function that must be better understood to help further optimize phonosurgical interventions. Stroboscopic assessment is inadequate for this purpose. METHODS: A newly developed color high-speed videoendoscopy (HSV) system that included time-synchronized recordings of the acoustic signal was used to perform a detailed examination of voice production mechanisms in 14 subjects. Functional voice outcomes after thyroidectomy: an assessment of the Dsyphonia Severity Index (DSI) after thyroidectomy.

BACKGROUND: The Dysphonia Severity Index (DSI) is an objective multiparametric acoustic calculation of vocal function; however, its changes after thyroidectomy have not yet been described. METHODS: Patient-reported symptoms, as well as auditory perceptual, acoustic, and videolaryngostroboscopic (VLS) data, were collected prospectively before and after thyroidectomy. Voice outcomes (normal versus negative voice outcome [NVO]) at 6 months after thyroidectomy were based on a combination of voice symptoms and objective findings. The DSI was assessed over the peri-operative course, and differences
