Improvement of visual acuity in residual meridional amblyopia by astigmatic axis video games.

PURPOSE: This study was carried out to evaluate the efficacy of developed "astigmatic axis video games" in children and adolescents having meridional amblyopia, with the aim to improve the visual acuity (VA). Till date, no studies are available on the treatment of amblyopic meridian. Meridional amblyopia (MA) results when astigmatism remains untreated for a long period. The aim of the study was to assess the effectiveness of a set of novel video games, the astigmatism axis video games (AAVGs), in improving the visual acuity (VA) in MA. METHODS: We included 50 eyes with residual myopic MA (cyl

Refractive Status and Amblyopia Risk Factors in Chinese Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Amblyopia risk factors in children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are usually hard to detect in early childhood due to poor cooperation and has not been reported in the Chinese population. We screened 168 Chinese children with ASD, aged between 3 and 8 years, and 264 age-matched neurotypical children with Spot photoscreener and basic ophthalmologic examinations. Children with ASD were found to have normal refractive status but significantly higher incidence of strabismus (16.1%), compared with control children (1.5%) (p < 0.01). Most of the cases of strabismus found in children with ASD

[Long-term functional effect of the photo screening in ocular diseases causing amblyopia].

Amblyopia represents the most common cause of insufficient monocular visual acuity in productive age.To begin the treatment in the early childhood is understood as the fundamental anticipation to achieve the optimal result. The research work concerns about the development of screening methods. Our retrospective study was not focused toward the efficacy of the screening itself, but it had to establish, how the participation of the suckling babies in the screening program influences the chance of good vision. The data analyzed in this study were obtained from retrospective review of medical reco

Interocular transfer of orientation-specific fMRI adaptation reveals amblyopia-related deficits in humans.

We devised an experimental strategy for assessing the cortical cross-talk between ocular subsystems. For this purpose we measured the interocular transfer of adaptation (IOTA) at different levels in the human brain, using orientation-selective fMRI adaptation. We tested 10 normally sighted and 10 stereoblind or stereodeficient amblyopic observers by adapting monocularly to phase-reversing, oblique sinusoidal gratings. Following monocular adaptation, cortical activations evoked by the same (monoptic) or the other eye (interocular) were measured for the same and for the orthogonal orientation in

Treatment of anisometropic amblyopia in older children using macular stimulation with telescopic magnification.

BACKGROUND: Brain plasticity exists beyond the critical period in children aged 9-17 years and in adults, and can result in vision restitution following more intense amblyopia treatments. Telescopic magnification provides a clearer image and better visual stimulation and hence promotes brain plasticity. The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of vision therapy with telescopic magnification on brain plasticity when given after the traditional methods of amblyopia treatment currently in use in older children. METHODS: The study was a prospective, nonrandomized, interventional ca

Unilateral congenital ptosis due to plexiform neurofibroma, causing refraction error and secondary amblyopia.

An 8-year-old boy with congenital ptosis of the right upper eyelid due to plexiform neurofibroma was operated on because of a rapidly worsening of his ptosis. Only partial removal of the tumor was possible. A hypermetropic astigmatism of the right eye was caused by the condition of the upper lid, with secondary amblyopia. This finding suggests that in cases of congenital ptosis the presence of a lid tumor must be suspected. Such a tumor causes ptosis and this can lead to refraction error and amblyopia.

Eight cases of congenital achromatopsia with amblyopia in two pedigrees from Northern Sweden.

Two families from northern Sweden with a total of 8 patients with typical symptoms of congenital achromatopsia with amblyopia were studied. In one of the families 4 affected children (3 brothers and 1 sister) also showed pallor of the optic discs and marked astigmatism. The transmission of the disease was consistent with an autosomal recessive inheritance in both families. The study confirmed that complete and incomplete achromatopsia might be different expressions of the same gene. Six out or 13 near relatives of the achromatic patients showed minor colour vision defects, suggesting a tendenc

Baicalin reactivates ocular dominance plasticity to restore vision from amblyopia in adult mice.

Amblyopia is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by reduced visual acuity due to abnormal visual experience during critical periods. In adulthood, the diminished plasticity of the primary visual cortex (V1) presents a major barrier to effective treatment. Here, we investigate whether baicalin, a flavonoid derived from Scutellaria baicalensis, can restore ocular dominance plasticity (ODP) and promote functional recovery in a mouse model of adult amblyopia. Using intrinsic signal optical imaging and electrophysiological recording, we demonstrate that 10 mg/kg baicalin treatment reactivat

Eye-hand coordination during visually-guided reaching in children with monocular deprivation amblyopia.

Monocular deprivation (MD) amblyopia caused by a dense unilateral congenital or infantile cataract leads to both sensory and ocular motor deficits, which can in turn affect motor performance. Previous research shows reduced fine motor skills in children with MD amblyopia on standardized tasks. Here, we evaluate eye-hand coordination during visually-guided reaching in MD amblyopia. A group of 17 children aged 7-15 years with MD amblyopia resulting from a unilateral cataract and a group of 41 age-similar control children were enrolled. During binocular viewing, children's reaching movements (LEA

Harnessing brain plasticity to improve binocular vision in amblyopia: An evidence-based update.

Amblyopia is a developmental visual disorder resulting from atypical binocular experience in early childhood that leads to abnormal visual cortex development and vision impairment. Recovery from amblyopia requires significant visual cortex neuroplasticity, i.e. the ability of the central nervous system and its synaptic connections to adapt their structure and function. There is a high level of neuroplasticity in early development and, historically, neuroplastic responses to changes in visual experience were thought to be restricted to a "critical period" in early life. However, as our review n

Unilateral Myelinated Retinal Nerve Fiber Layer, High Myopia, and Amblyopia: A Case Report.

Straatsma syndrome corresponds to the presence of myelinated retinal nerve fibers with ipsilateral myopia and amblyopia. Strabismus is also a common finding in this entity, and patients with strabismus usually present a poor visual prognosis. We report the case of a two-year-old male diagnosed with Straatsma syndrome with a follow-up period of 2.5 years. Despite the early diagnosis and institution of treatment, there was no significant response to therapy. Early recognition of Straatsma syndrome and aggressive treatment of amblyopia may result in better outcomes.
