Safety of topical ophthalmic antibiotics in pregnant women with hordeola, chalazia, blepharitis, or bacterial conjunctivitis: propensity score analyses.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association between exposure to topical ophthalmic antibiotics during pregnancy and adverse neonatal outcomes. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, we identified pregnant women with hordeola, chalazia, blepharitis, or bacterial conjunctivitis from 2005 to 2018 using the Japanese Medical Data Centre Claims Database. From the eligible women, we extracted women who were dispensed no topical antibiotics during the first trimester (non-antibiotic group), women who were dispensed topical fluoroquinolones alone at least once (fluoroquinolone alone group), and wo

The relationship between involutional ectropion and inflammatory disorders of the eyelids and ocular surface: insights from a large-scale national study.

This study investigated potential associations between ectropion and various chronic and systemic inflammatory diseases affecting the eyelids and ocular surface. This retrospective case-control study, spanning 2001-2022, used electronic medical records from Clalit Health Services (CHS) in Israel. Patients diagnosed with involutional ectropion served as the case group, while two control groups were used for comparison: one comprising patients diagnosed with senile cataract and the other with various ophthalmic diseases. Matching for the control groups was performed at a 1:3 ratio based on year

Are Periocular and Systemic Allergy Conditions Risk Factors for Pterygium?

PURPOSE: To evaluate risk factors for pterygium and prevalence of periocular and systemic diseases among patients with pterygium. METHODS: A retrospective case-control study was conducted among members of Clalit Health Services (CHS) in Israel, from 2001 to 2022. A total of 13,944 patients diagnosed with pterygium were included. For each case, three controls were matched among all CHS patients according to year of birth, sex, and ethnicity. Mixed models were used to assess differences in demographic characteristics, ocular and systemic diseases between the groups. Generalized estimating equat

Performance of the diagnostic test for Demodex spp. in the context of minimizing the risk of false negative results.

Demodex species are permanent parasites of pilosebaceous units infesting humans worldwide. Of the two species associated with the human host, Demodex folliculorum is much more commonly detected and occurs more abundantly in hair follicles and Zeiss glands. Demodex brevis, on the other hand, is mainly associated with the sebaceous and meibomian glands, all over the body. The infestation is usually chronic, and the troublesome ocular and skin symptoms often make it difficult for patients to function in both a social and professional context. Despite this, diagnostics for Demodex spp. are still n

Atypical herpes zoster ophthalmicus with madarosis of upper eyelid, recurrent iridocyclitis and atrophic multifocal chorioretinopathy.

INTRODUCTION: Ocular involvement due to varicella-zoster virus (VZV) infection includes conjunctivitis, scleritis, keratitis, uveitis, and necrotizing retinitis. Non-necrotizing chorioretinopathy as a late manifestation has been described. CASE REPORT: A 50-year-old immunocompetent man developed herpes zoster ophthalmicus (HZO) in the right V1 dermatome with acute anterior uveitis (AAU) treated with oral valaciclovir and topical steroid and a chalazion in the upper eyelid with associated madarosis. Four months later, he presented recurrence of the AAU and multiple areas of chorioretinal atrop

Nonosseous Periocular Manifestations of Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis: A Case Report and Systematic Review.

PURPOSE: Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is a disorder of dendritic cell proliferation that typically involves bone. It can be diagnostically challenging when LCH presents without bony involvement, leading to delays in diagnosis and treatment. In this study, the periocular manifestations of LCH in cases where the underlying orbital bones are not involved are described through a systematic review. METHODS: A systematic review of the literature was performed to capture all cases of LCH that involved the periocular region but not the underlying orbital bones. These included LCH cases that in

PURPOSE: To assess the efficacy and predictability of a minimal incision posterior approach levator plication technique for correction of involutional ptosis. METHOD: Retrospective chart review of patients with involutional aponeurotic ptosis underwent minimal incision posterior approach levator plication technique between August 2013 and June 2014 by a single surgeon. The upper lid was double everted, and the conjunctiva and Muller's muscle layers were incised vertically until the levator aponeurosis could be identified. [Treatment of benign eyelid conditions with Argon laser].

Eyelid surgery is not always uneventful. Complications (punctal ectropion, retractile scars) can sometimes occur. Argon laser treatment is an interesting alternative technique, particularly in cases with cosmetic indications. The advantages of the procedure, compared to surgery are numerous: magnified view of tissue removal, enhancing complete excision; good hemostasis, avoiding wound sutures and bandage; fast and painless technique; outpatient office procedure with little post-operative care; good acceptance of the technique by most of the patients. The technique and the main indications are

Pyoderma Gangrenosum of the Eyelid: A Challenging Case.

BACKGROUND Pyoderma gangrenosum (PG) involving the eyelid is rare and can closely mimic other differential diagnoses, posing a diagnostic challenge. This case highlights the diagnostic approach and management of pyoderma gangrenosum-related eyelid lesions. CASE REPORT A 29-year-old man with a history of ulcerative colitis developed a persistent ulcerative lesion on his left upper eyelid, which failed to respond to conventional treatment for chalazion. Examination revealed a pinkish-yellow ulcerative lesion with ill-defined borders, causing distortion of the eyelid margin contour. Due to the po

Cutaneous apocrine-derived eyelid lesions: a series.

Eyelid lesions with apocrine differentiation are uncommon. A retrospective review of 1,920 biopsied sweat gland lesions at a tertiary hospital's ocular pathology laboratory from 2006 to 2024 revealed seven unique cutaneous eyelid tumors with sweat gland apocrine differentiation. The distinct clinical presentation and histopathologic features of the selected eyelid tumors are described. The lesions were further differentiated based on immunohistochemical analysis. Seven patients were identified with enlarging unilateral eyelid sweat gland lesions. All lesions underwent excisional biopsy and dem
