Respiratory syncytial virus infection among children younger than 2 years admitted to a paediatric intensive care unit with extended severe acute respiratory infection in ten Gavi-eligible countries: the RSV GOLD-ICU Network study.

BACKGROUND: Patient-level data on life-threatening respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection in children in low-income and lower-middle-income countries (LMICs) are scarce, and this scarcity might limit demand for RSV interventions in LMICs who rely on support from Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance. We aimed to describe the characteristics of RSV-positive children younger than 2 years who were admitted to paediatric intensive care units (PICUs) with extended severe acute respiratory infection (eSARI) in Gavi-eligible countries. METHODS: The RSV GOLD-ICU Network study is a 2-year prospective, multi

The elimination of human African trypanosomiasis: Monitoring progress towards the 2021-2030 WHO road map targets.

BACKGROUND: Human African trypanosomiasis (HAT) is a neglected tropical disease that usually occurs in rural areas in sub-Saharan Africa. It caused devastating epidemics during the 20th century. Sustained, coordinated efforts by different stakeholders working with national sleeping sickness control programmes (NSSCPs) succeeded in controlling the disease and reducing the number of cases to historically low levels. In 2012, WHO targeted the elimination of the disease as a public health problem by 2020. This goal has been reached and a new ambitious target was stated in the WHO road map for NTDs

Dry eye symptom questionnaires show adequate measurement precision and psychometric validity for clinical assessment of vision-related quality of life in glaucoma patients.

PURPOSE: To ascertain the presence of Dry Eye Syndrome (DES) in patients being treated for glaucoma, using subjective and objective methods and to examine DES impact on their quality of life (QOL). METHOD: A cross-sectional study was conducted by employing 156 glaucoma patients recruited from treatment centers in the Cape Coast Metropolis in Ghana. All the participants underwent dry eye examination and completed the 25-item National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire (NEI-VFQ), the Dry Eye-related Quality of Life Score (DEQS) and the Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI). Comparisons o

Second Trimester Anaemia in Pregnant Ghanaians.

BACKGROUND: Anaemia is considered a severe public health problem by WHO and is seen as such in Ghana. Its prevalence in pregnancy has remained high despite improved antenatal care. The main purpose of this study was to determine the current anaemia prevalence and aetiology other than iron deficiency. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study. A total of 214 pregnant women were studied. Women were administered a questionnaire related with the subject and blood samples were drawn. Full blood count was performed within four hours and serum iron, folate and vitamin B12 were studied. Other tests d

Benign acute viral myositis in African migrants: A clinical, serological, and pathological study.

BACKGROUND: Several viruses have been described as causes of acquired inflammatory myopathies; however, the mechanisms by which they cause muscle disease are still unclear. The aim of this study was to describe the laboratory features of benign acute myositis in a small case series. METHODS: A detailed pathological and serological analysis was performed in five African migrants who developed an acute viral myositis complicated by rhabdomyolysis. RESULTS: Muscle biopsies clearly documented an inflammatory myopathy with histological features similar to polymyositis including CD8+ T cells surro

Cerebrospinal fluid and serum biomarkers of cerebral malaria mortality in Ghanaian children.

BACKGROUND: Plasmodium falciparum can cause a diffuse encephalopathy known as cerebral malaria (CM), a major contributor to malaria associated mortality. Despite treatment, mortality due to CM can be as high as 30% while 10% of survivors of the disease may experience short- and long-term neurological complications. The pathogenesis of CM and other forms of severe malaria is multi-factorial and appear to involve cytokine and chemokine homeostasis, inflammation and vascular injury/repair. Identification of prognostic markers that can predict CM severity will enable development of better interven

Caesarean section and birth weight at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital--preliminary report.

OBJECTIVE: This preliminary retrospective survey was done to find out whether the indications for Caesarean Section had any bearing on the birth weight. METHOD: The foetal outcome for 673 parturients who delivered at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital between September 1, 1998 and December 31, 1998 was analysed. RESULT: Caesarean section done for cephalopelvic disproportion and for 2 or more previous sections yielded the highest mean birth weight (3.43 kg +/- 0.02 kg) and the best foetal outcome. Hypertensive disorders yielded the lowest mean birth weight (1.8 kg +/- 0.3 kg) and poorest foetal o

Barriers to the Provision and Utilization of Palliative Care in Africa: A Rapid Scoping Review.

Palliative care (PC) has continued to be less available, underutilized, and unintegrated in many of the healthcare systems, especially in Africa. This scoping review synthesized existing published papers on adult PC in Africa, to report the barriers to PC and to assess the methodologies used in these studies. Eight electronic databases and Google Scholar were searched to identify relevant studies published between 2005 and 2018. Overall, 42 publications (34 empirical studies and 9 reviews) that reported issues related to barriers to adult PC were selected. Three themes identified were individu

Physical and mental health impact of perimenopause, menopause and post menopause in a diverse global population (MARIE Project- Global Chapter WP 2a): cross-sectional quantitative data from a mixed-methods study.

BACKGROUND: Menopause is a major global health issue affecting cisgender women, transgender people, and gender-diverse populations, yet it remains under-recognised in research and policy, particularly in low-income and middle-income countries. Rising life expectancy means that an increasing proportion of the world's population spends many years in peri-, menopausal or post-menopausal stages, often with significant physical and psychological symptoms. Despite this burden, evidence from diverse global settings is limited. METHODS: The MARIE WP2a project is a mixed-methods study that aimed to ex

Global high-risk clones and multidrug-resistant serotype strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa from surgical site infections in low-resource settings.

Surgical site infections (SSIs) caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa pose significant challenges in healthcare, particularly in low and middle-income countries (LMICs). Understanding the genomic characteristics and antimicrobial resistance profiles of P. aeruginosa isolates is crucial for informing appropriate treatment and guiding infection prevention and control strategies. P. aeruginosa isolates recovered from SSIs were analyzed using whole-genome sequencing and antimicrobial susceptibility testing. The isolates were identified using matrix assisted laser desorption ionization time of flight ma

A randomized, open-label study of the tolerability and efficacy of one or three daily doses of ivermectin plus diethylcarbamazine and albendazole (IDA) versus one dose of ivermectin plus albendazole (IA) for treatment of onchocerciasis.

BACKGROUND: Onchocerciasis ("river blindness") has been targeted for elimination. New treatments that kill or permanently sterilize female worms could accelerate this process. Prior studies have shown that triple drug treatment with ivermectin plus diethylcarbamazine and albendazole (IDA) leads to prolonged clearance of microfilaremia in persons with lymphatic filariasis. We now report results from a randomized clinical trial that compared the tolerability and efficacy of IDA vs. a comparator treatment (ivermectin plus albendazole, IA) in persons with onchocerciasis. METHODS AND FINDINGS: The

Cost and Cost-Effectiveness of mHealth Interventions to Promote Uptake of Antenatal Care (ANC) in Low- and Middle-Income Countries: A Scoping Review.

Mobile health (mHealth) innovations are increasingly being considered to improve antenatal care (ANC) uptake in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). However, there is limited evidence of their value for money, which limits policymakers' ability to make decisions about sustainability and scale. This scoping review synthesizes available evidence on the cost and cost-effectiveness of mHealth interventions aimed at promoting ANC uptake in LMICs. Following the Arksey and O'Malley framework and Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews (PRI

Outcomes of hyperglycaemia in pregnancy in Africa: Systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: The global prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus has significantly risen in recent decades, leading to a corresponding increase in the incidence of diabetes-complicated pregnancies. Hyperglycaemia in pregnancy (HIP), the most common metabolic complication encountered during pregnancy, is associated with a range of adverse maternal and foetal outcomes. This systematic review comprehensively examined the maternal, foetal, neonatal, childhood, and long-term maternal outcomes of HIP in Africa. METHODS: A systematic review of all studies investigating HIP outcomes in Africa from Januar
