The reliability of frequency-doubling technology (FDT) perimetry in a pediatric population.

PURPOSE: Frequency-doubling Technology IFDT) Perimetry was introduced as a rapid, easy method for detection of visual-field defects in adults. Its reliability, howev, has never been tested among pediatric patients. The purpose of this study was to determine if children could complete a screening program of FDT Perimetry reliably and to define the age range over which it might be most applicable. METHODS: Two hundred fifty-nine normal children (mean age, 10.7 years; range, 4 to 17 years) were asked to complete the FDT C-20-1 screening test as part of their general eye examination. The visual-f

Artificial intelligence-based prediction of esophageal adenocarcinoma risk in Barrett's esophagus patients: a literature review.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Barrett's esophagus (BE) is the principal precursor lesion for esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC), a malignancy with rising incidence and poor survival when diagnosed at advanced stages. Current screening and surveillance strategies rely on endoscopy and random biopsies, which are invasive, resource-intensive, and prone to sampling error. Artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as a promising tool to enhance early detection, risk stratification, and surveillance efficiency in BE. This narrative review summarizes contemporary AI applications in BE management, evaluates t

[Daltonism and the genetics of aging].

In order to test whether mutations giving rise to color vision deficiencies are more frequently inherited from older fathers, an exhaustive screening of births in the Namur region has allowed to isolate a sample of 225 descending sons of maternal grandfathers who were older than 45 years at their daughter's birth. The incidence of color vision defects was compared between this set of cases and three control groups totalling 959 boys from independent families. While these comparisons were not conclusive, we propose new hypotheses concerning the population dynamics of color vision deficiencies.

Red reflex examination for early detection of pediatric cataract using a novel red-reflex screening device.

BACKGROUND: Early detection of pediatric cataracts is essential to prevent irreversible visual impairment; however, effective screening remains limited in many settings. This study evaluated the diagnostic performance of the CatScreener, a self-designed handheld red-reflex screening device, when operated by non-expert examiners. METHODS: A total of 250 eyes from 250 infants and young children (≤8 years) underwent CatScreener screening and slit-lamp examination. Images were independently interpreted by two medical students and two junior ophthalmologists. Diagnostic outcomes were compared with

Instrument-based screening for amblyopia risk factors in a primary care setting in children aged 18 to 30 months.

Amblyopia is the leading cause of vision impairment in children, and its early detection can avoid irreversible consequences for a child's visual ability. In this prospective study, to detect amblyopia risk factors, we examined patients aged 18 to 30 months in primary care settings. Patients were referred to an ophthalmologist for confirmation. The main aims were to detect amblyogenic risk factors and to assess the usefulness of a photoscreener in such settings. Out of 453 patients, 42 (9.3%) presented visual alterations according to the photoscreener, with astigmatism being the most common. T

Glaucoma in Adults-Screening, Diagnosis, and Management: A Review.

IMPORTANCE: Glaucoma is the most common cause of irreversible blindness worldwide. Many patients with glaucoma are asymptomatic early in the disease course. Primary care clinicians should know which patients to refer to an eye care professional for a complete eye examination to check for signs of glaucoma and to determine what systemic conditions or medications can increase a patient's risk of glaucoma. Open-angle and narrow-angle forms of glaucoma are reviewed, including a description of the pathophysiology, risk factors, screening, disease monitoring, and treatment options. OBSERVATIONS: Gl

Curious case of retrolental mass: An unusual tele-screening artifact.

We are presenting a case of premature baby born at 32 weeks of gestation who was under regular follow-up with our retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) tele-screening team. During final follow-up at 41 weeks of postconceptional age, anterior segment image captured with RetCam showed a retrolental mass lesion in right eye resembling retinoblastoma or medulloepithelioma. The baby was referred to our base hospital for further evaluation, where a detailed examination showed no retrolental lesion or intraocular mass. This is the first case where imaging artifact, despite use of high-quality imaging syst

The infrared reflex: a potential new method for congenital cataract screening.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the accuracy of infrared (IR)-reflex assessment using a prototype imaging device to standard non-mydriatic red-reflex screening with direct ophthalmoscope (DO) in the diagnosis of neonatal and childhood cataract. METHODS: The comparison of the techniques was made in two distinct cohorts: in the first, newborns underwent IR and red-reflex testing by a medical student, with results compared to a reference red-reflex examination by an experienced midwife. In the second, an enriched cohort of children attending a specialist paediatric ophthalmology clinic had IR and red-refl

How the diabetic eye loses vision.

The objective is to review the most common causes of vision loss in patients with diabetes with the goal of better managing patients with diabetic eye disease. In this review, the causes of vision loss, and the clinical evaluation and management of diabetic retinopathy (DR) and diabetic macular edema (DME) are outlined. Patients with diabetes mellitus have an increased risk of vision loss and blindness. In patients with diabetes, the primary mechanism responsible for vision loss is centrally involved DME or clinically significant macular edema (CSME), defined as vascular leakage resulting in f

MammoViT: A Custom Vision Transformer Architecture for Accurate BIRADS Classification in Mammogram Analysis.

Background: Breast cancer screening through mammography interpretation is crucial for early detection and improved patient outcomes. However, the manual classification of mammograms using the BIRADS (Breast Imaging-Reporting and Data System) remains challenging due to subtle imaging features, inter-reader variability, and increasing radiologist workload. Traditional computer-aided detection systems often struggle with complex feature extraction and contextual understanding of mammographic abnormalities. To address these limitations, this study proposes MammoViT, a novel hybrid deep learning fr

Prevalence of color vision deficiency among Saudi dentists and its effect on shade selection: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Accurate shade selection is essential for aesthetic dental restorations and relies on the clinician's color perception. Color vision deficiency (CVD) may impair this ability, yet data on its prevalence and clinical impact among dentists in Saudi Arabia are limited. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of CVD and its association with shade-matching accuracy. METHODOLOGY: This cross-sectional study included 150 dental students, interns, general dentists, and specialists. Color vision was assessed using the Ishihara test and categorized as normal, borderline, or red-green CVD

[Problematic issues related to screening for diabetic retinopathy].

The aim of this paper is to highlight the importance of screening for diabetic retinopathy and the education of diabetic patients. The key prerequisite of an effective screening is close collaboration between health care professionals. Successful screening detects DR at early stages and helps to prevent severe visual loss. Two cases of proliferative DR exhibiting the most serious complications (vitreous haemorrhage, traction retinal detachment and combined traction and rhegmatogenous retinal detachment, neovascular glaucoma) are reported. The first comorbid patient lost her vision despite the

Bilateral vision loss responsive to corticosteroids.

A 48-year-old woman presented with painless bilateral vision loss that began in the left eye and responded to steroids, followed by vision loss in the right eye one day after completing her steroid taper. Diagnosis was complicated by a positive screening test for Leber hereditary optic neuropathy and a negative workup for demyelinating disease. Steroid-dependent optic neuropathies such as autoimmune optic neuropathy and chronic relapsing inflammatory optic neuropathy were considered in the differential. Seven months after initial presentation, the patient developed a new periventricular white
