INTRODUCTION: The use of adequate assessment tools in health care is crucial for the management of care. The lack of specific tools in Portugal for assessing the performance of children who use cochlear implants motivated the translation and adaptation of the EARS (Evaluation of Auditory Responses to Speech) test battery into European Portuguese. This test battery is today one of the most commonly used by (re)habilitation teams of deaf children who use cochlear implants worldwide. The goal to be achieved with the validation of EARS was to provide (re)habilitation teams an instrument that enabl

OBJECTIVES: Impacted cerumen in the ear canal is a common problem that can cause discomfort or prevent assessment. Cerumen removal can have deleterious side effects if performed improperly. We created an aural irrigation system which is currently not available on the market to provide a continuous flow of water at a regulated pressure and temperature. The purposes of this study were to (1) evaluate the safety and efficacy of this aural irrigation system in children and (2) determine the success rate of cerumen disimpaction when used by an allied health professional.
METHODS: The following wer

BACKGROUND: Indigenous children have the highest reported prevalence and severity of otitis media in the world, but whether their clinical management varies accordingly is unknown.
METHODS: Using a representative Australia-wide cluster survey of consecutive primary healthcare consultations, we compared practitioners' investigation, treatment, and referral practices for otitis media in indigenous and nonindigenous children (0-18 years), after adjusting for clustering.
RESULTS: Over 8 years (1998-2006), 7991 practitioners managed 141,693 problems during 119,503 consultations with children, inc

OBJECTIVE: To explore the clinical and audiological characteristics of sensorineural hearing loss (SHL) with pathological changes both in cochlea and retrocochlear in children and evaluate the relationship between SHL and the lesions in the central nervous system (CNS).
METHODS: Three hundred and ten cases (500 ears) of SHL accepted between 1998 and 2000 were studied. The age of patients was ranged from 1 month to 6 years old. According to the evaluation of function of CNS by pediatric neurologist, all cases were divided into two groups: SHL with CNS disease and SHL without CNS disease. Some

UNLABELLED: Assisted reproductive technologies (ART), including in vitro fertilization-embryo transfer (IVF-ET) and intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), are known to contribute a higher risk of birth defects; however, studies have rarely evaluated the association between IVF-ET and diagnostic hearing loss (HL). This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of and risk factors for HL and to clarify the association between IVF-ET and HL among twinborn infants. We enrolled 1860 live-born twin neonates born at a hospital in China from January 2017 to December 2020. After multi-step hearing scree

BACKGROUND: This study identified and explored how National Health Service (NHS) hearing aid clinics address cultural competence concerning Deaf British Sign Language (BSL) users. This was approached by (i) investigating how organisational processes meet the needs of Deaf signers from a hospital and hearing aid clinic perspective, (ii) analysing policies and guidelines to investigate if they equip practitioners to meet the needs of Deaf signers and (iii) exploring with practitioners who work in hearing aid clinics about their experiences of working with Deaf signers.
METHODS: This study utili

BACKGROUND: The tinnitus susceptibility patterns in relation to different psychological and life stressors are unknown in different cultures.
AIM: To determine the comorbid psychosocial factors and behaviors associated with tinnitus and the predictors for the increase in its severity.
METHODS: Participants were 230 adults (males = 70; females = 160; mean age = 38.6 ± 3.3). They underwent audiograms, speech discrimination and masking testing, and neuropsychiatric evaluation. Measures used for assessment included tinnitus handicap inventory, depression anxiety stress scale 21 (DASS-21), percei

Age-related hearing loss is one of the most prevalent health conditions in older adults. Although hearing aid technology has advanced dramatically, a large percentage of older adults do not use hearing aids. This untreated hearing loss may accelerate declines in cognitive and neural function and dramatically affect the quality of life. Our previous findings have shown that the use of hearing aids improves cortical and cognitive function and offsets subcortical physiological decline. The current study tested the time course of neural adaptation to hearing aids over the course of 6 months and ai

BACKGROUND: Over 90% of the 50,000 deaf children in the UK have hearing parents, many of whom were not expecting a deaf child and may require specialist support. Deaf children can experience poorer long-term outcomes than hearing children across a range of domains. After early detection by the Universal Newborn Hearing Screening Programme, parents in the UK receive support from Qualified Teachers of the Deaf and audiologists but resources are tight and intervention support can vary by locality. There are challenges faced due to a lack of clarity around what specific parenting support intervent

BACKGROUND: The ASHA recommends including electrophysiological measures in an auditory processing disorder (APD) assessment battery, but few audiologists do so, potentially because of limited published evidence for its utility.
PURPOSE: This study compared the auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) of children with APD with age-matched children and adults.
STUDY SAMPLE: This study retrospectively examined the records of 108 children suspected of APD (sAPD) who had click-evoked ABRs recorded as part of their clinical assessment. Twenty adults and 22 typically developing (TD) children were recrui

OBJECTIVE: Fitting cochlear implants, especially the precise determination of electrical hearing thresholds, is a time-consuming and complex task for patients as well as audiologists. Aim of the study was to develop a method that enables cochlear implant (CI) patients to determine their electrical hearing thresholds precisely and independently. Applicability and impact of this method on speech perception in noise at soft speech levels were evaluated.
METHOD: An adaptive psychoacoustic procedure for precise hearing threshold determination (precT) was implemented using MatLab (MathWorks) and a

PURPOSE: Cisplatin is widely used but highly ototoxic. Effects of cumulative cisplatin dose on hearing loss have not been comprehensively evaluated in survivors of adult-onset cancer.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Comprehensive audiological measures were conducted on 488 North American male germ cell tumor (GCT) survivors in relation to cumulative cisplatin dose, including audiograms (0.25 to 12 kHz), tests of middle ear function, and tinnitus. American Speech-Language-Hearing Association criteria defined hearing loss severity. The geometric mean of hearing thresholds (0.25 to 12 kHz) summarized over

BACKGROUND: The most common management strategy for tinnitus provided in the UK audiology clinics is education and advice. This may also be combined with some form of sound therapy (e.g. digital hearing aids). While education and advice is generally provided by all clinics, there is a marked variability in provision of hearing aids that depends very much on clinical decisions. A recent Cochrane review concluded a lack of evidence to support or refute hearing aid use as a routine intervention for people with tinnitus and hearing loss. This lack of evidence is reflected in the inconsistency of t

Standardized, evidence-based guideline for tinnitus management is currently lacking in Korea. This guideline aims to provide evidence-based recommendations for the diagnosis and management of tinnitus in Korean adults, adapted to the Korean healthcare system. A multidisciplinary panel (eight otorhinolaryngologists, one neurologist, one psychiatrist, and one audiologist) conducted systematic literature searches up to 2025 using PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, KoreaMed, and KMBASE. Evidence quality was assessed using the GRADE methodology. Nine key clinical questions (KQs) were developed in PI

BACKGROUND: Human communication is essential for socialising, learning and working. Disabilities and social disadvantage have serious negative consequences on communication which can impact development from early life into adulthood. While speech-language therapists and audiologists (SLT/As) have an important role to play in addressing communication disability and disadvantage, services continue to be inaccessible, unaffordable and unattainable for the majority population. In order to support this large population, it is necessary to reimagine SLT/A practices in line with equity and social inc

PURPOSE: Dietary flavonoids are bioactive compounds that have been widely investigated for their associations with vascular health outcomes. As the development of tinnitus has been linked to vascular pathways, dietary flavonoids may have role in the prevention of tinnitus symptoms. This study reports the associations between the intakes of major classes of dietary flavonoids and 10-year incidence of tinnitus.
METHODS: Of the 1753 participants (aged ≥ 50 years) from the Blue Mountains Hearing Study with complete baseline data on tinnitus symptoms and dietary intakes, 536 (31%) cases of tinnitu

The ability of aural acoustic immittance measures and validated pneumatic otoscopy to identify middle ear effusion (MEE) was determined for a group of children with chronic or recurrent otitis media. The measures were made immediately prior to surgery for placement of tympanostomy tubes, with the validating diagnosis of MEE made by the surgeons. Aural acoustic admittance measures were made by a certified and licensed clinical audiologist using an instrument that meets current standards and otoscopic examinations were made by a nurse practitioner validated for use of otoscopy in the identificat
