To analyze changes in mandibular form associated with an inverted-L osteotomy and autogenous bone graft, preoperative, early postoperative (EPO), and late postoperative (LPO) lateral cephalographs of 14 children (mean age approximately 9 years) with unilateral craniofacial microsomia (CFM) were scanned and nine mandibular landmarks digitized. Average mandibular geometries, scaled to an equivalent size, were generated using Procrustes superimposition. Cephalometry, Euclidean distance matrix analysis (EDMA), and thin-plate spline (TPS) analyses were carried out on mean mandibular configurations.

Dental management of persons with epidermolysis bullosa remains challenging because of the severe hard and soft tissue manifestations of these diseases. This study reviews the dental treatment of 14 cases requiring 24 general anesthetics. Twenty-three of the cases were managed with oral tracheal intubation to accomplish full-mouth dental rehabilitation. Dental therapy consisted of preventive, restorative, and surgical procedures, with extractions and stainless steel crowns being the most common treatment modalities. There were no serious postoperative complications, and no airway problems were

The purpose of this project was to study the effect of calcium sulfate pellets on early bony consolidation in distraction osteogenesis. A total of 13 patients (control group: five patients; calcium sulfate group: eight patients) were operated on between April 2001 and December 2004. The age of the patients ranged from 18 to 25 years. In the calcium sulfate group, after completing a mandibular osteotomy, a total of 4 mm was distracted initially. Nine to 10 calcium sulfate (Osteoset) pellets were implanted into the 4-mm distracted gap of mandible. In the control group, a mandibular osteotomy alo

Scleroderma poses many difficulties and challenges for the treating dentist. Until now, dental implant treatment for patients with scleroderma was limited to either complete overdentures or short-span fixed partial dentures. This clinical report describes the use of modified techniques to fabricate a long-span fixed prosthesis delivered after serial extractions and implant placement.

This clinical report highlights some of the problems in providing a suitable prosthesis for a patient who suffers from systemic sclerosis. A conventional removable partial denture may not have been suitable because of the lack of denture bearing area, changing peripheral seal, and insufficient teeth to support and retain the denture. An implant-retained FPD overcame these difficulties. One would hope that, with regular maintenance and monitoring, quoted prosthesis success of 15 years can be achieved.

Background: The lip has functional and aesthetic importance. Lip defects occur due to the variety of etiology and the choice of their reconstruction has profound effect on functions and cosmesis. There are multiple options available for reconstruction according to defect size, but superiority of one method over another is still debated and hence the methods and their outcome were analyzed prospectively. Material and method: Twenty-one patients with all sizes and locations of defects in upper and lower lip with acquired etiology were included in the evaluation. Reconstruction was performed acco

Orofacial involvement is common and often understated in the treatment clinical guidelines of systemic sclerosis. It impairs daily life by having repercussions on comfort, nutrition, aesthetics and self-confidence. This review aimed at describing exhaustively the different orofacial consequences of systemic sclerosis. A systematic search was conducted using four databases (PubMed, Cochrane Library, Dentistry & Oral Sciences Source and SCOPUS) up to December 2016 according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses. Grey literature and hand search were also includ

BACKGROUND: The repair of extensive lower lip defects is difficult due to the presence of both functional and esthetic requirements. This report describes functional lip repair using the partial latissimus dorsi free flap without nerve coaptation.
METHODS: Reconstruction of the lower lip due to subtotal and total tissue defects was performed using latissimus dorsi free flap on twelve patients, between 2013 and 2017. The etiology was squamous cell carcinoma in six patients, malignant melanoma in one, firearm injury in three and microstomia in two. Following exposure of the lip defect, the part

UNLABELLED: One of the methods for correction of "whistle" deformity following a primary bilateral cleft lip repair is a Skoog procedure. It consists of orbicularis oris muscle mobilization and suture following vermilion closure in a V-Y manner. The aim of the study was to evaluate late results of Skoog procedure in "whistle" deformity correction.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Between 2000 and 2009 12 patients with whistle deformity underwent Skoog procedure. All of them were operated by the same surgeon. Aesthetic outcome in terms of lip fullness, symmetry and overall appearance was evaluated by pat

BACKGROUND: Although escharectomy and full-thickness skin autografting have been widely used to treat deep facial burns, the clinical outcomes remain unacceptable. Composite razor-thin skin grafting over acellular dermal matrix scaffold has been used successfully in repairing burns of the trunk and limbs, but its use in covering deep facial burns has rarely been reported. In this study, the authors investigated the clinical outcomes of early escharectomy and concurrent composite razor-thin skin autografting and acellular dermal matrix scaffold for treating deep facial burns.
METHODS: Patients

Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a multisystem connective tissue disease of unknown etiology. The hallmark of SSc is scleroderma, referring to the presence of thickened, hardened skin. Oral and maxillofacial manifestations of the disease are numerous including masklike appearance, trismus, muscular atrophy, thin atrophied lips, secondary microstomia, xerostomia, rigidity of tongue and lips, widening of the periodontal ligament space, trigeminal neuralgia, and resorption of the mandible. A 35-year-old woman with limited cutaneous SSc presented with bilateral mandibular condylysis, severe class II ma

BACKGROUND: Microvascular free flap transplantation is the current most common choice for reconstruction of difficult through-and-through buccal defect after cancer extirpation. The chimeric anterolateral thigh (ALT) flap is an ideal flap to cover this full thickness defect, but variation in the location of perforators is a major concern. Herein, we introduce computed tomographic angiography (CTA)-guided mathematical perforators mapping for chimeric ALT flap design and harvest.
METHODS: Between September 2008 and March 2009, nine patients with head and neck tumour underwent preoperative CTA p

The latent transforming growth factor-beta-binding protein 3 (LTBP3), encoding extracellular matrix proteins, plays a role in skeletal formation. Mutations in LTBP3 have been associated with various types of skeletal dysplasia. We aimed to characterize clinical and molecular features of more patients with mutations in the gene, which may help suggest genotype-phenotype correlation. The first two East Asian patients with short stature, heart defects, and orodental anomalies having LTBP3 mutations were identified. Whole exome and Sanger sequencing revealed that the one with a novel heterozygous

Trisomy 18 is a disorder characterized by psychomotor disabilities, dysmorphic features and organ malformations, including mental disabilities, growth deficiency, poor motor ability, micrognathia, microcephaly, low-set and malformed ears, distinctively clenched fists with overlapping fingers, and congenital heart defects. The prognosis is poor: 90% of infants with trisomy 18 do not survive beyond the first year of life and 99% die before the age of 10. This paper reports on a 13-year-old child diagnosed with trisomy 18. The major clinical features are cleft lip/palate, high-arched narrow palat
