Comparative evaluation of vestibular incision subperiosteal tunnel access and coronally advanced flap in adjunction with platelet-rich fibrin for maxillary gingival recession - A randomized controlled study.

BACKGROUND: Gingival recession requires root coverage to address esthetics and dentinal hypersensitivity, prevent root caries and abrasion, and improve plaque control. The coronally advanced flap (CAF) with subepithelial connective tissue graft (SCTG) is a widely accepted gold standard but is technique sensitive and less predictable. The vestibular incision subperiosteal tunnel access (VISTA) technique is a minimally invasive alternative that yields more predictable results and better patient compliance. Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) as a membrane for covering defects is less technique sensitive

A retrospective study of dental conditions of captive brown bears (Ursus arctos spp.) compared with free-ranging Alaskan grizzlies (Ursus arctos horribilis).

The teeth of 63 skulls of brown bears (Ursus arctos spp.) that had lived in the Bernese bear pit between 1850 and 1995 were examined and radiographed for occlusion, loss of teeth, calcified dental plaque and calculus, attrition, and caries. Dental pathology and periodontal status were evaluated with respect to age and location in the dentition. Further techniques such as computed tomography, microhardness testing, histologic sectioning, and scanning electron microscopy were used in selected cases to verify the macroscopic and radiographic diagnoses. Fourteen skulls originating from free-rangin

A dual-matrix technique for direct composite veneers using liquid dam and pull-through contouring: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Direct composite veneers for multiple anterior diastemas still present a challenge for a predictable palatal contour and controlled interproximal emergence profiles for interproximal emergence. Conventional matrices are not positionally stable and do not allow for morphological control, thereby leading to a technique-dependent procedure with the risk of inter-tooth asymmetry. PURPOSE: To present a dual matrix technique using liquid dam stabilization and a pull-through interproximal contouring while placing direct composite veneers in multiple anterior diastemas. TECHNIQUE AND CAS

Preclinical effectiveness of a novel pulp capping material.

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the direct pulp capping response to a novel resin-based calcium phosphate cement (RCPC). METHODS: The RCPC was placed in contact with the exposed healthy pulps of dog teeth and in a follow-up study on the healthy or inflamed pulps of ferret teeth. The inflamed ferret teeth had reversible pulpitis induced with Salmonella typhimurium lipopolysaccharides. After direct pulp capping with RCPC or visible light-curing resin-modified calcium hydroxide material (VLCCH) as a control, the restorations were bonded using a composite resin. The pulp r

Response of human dental pulp capped with MTA and calcium hydroxide powder.

OBJECTIVES: To compare the response of human dental pulp capped with a mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) and Ca(OH)2 powder. METHODS AND MATERIAL: Pulp exposures were performed on the occlusal floor of 40 permanent premolars. The pulp was then capped with either Ca(OH)2 powder (CH) or MTA and restored with resin composite. After 30 days (groups CH30 and MTA30) and 60 days (groups CH60 and MTA60), the teeth were extracted and processed for HE and categorized in a histological score system. The data were subjected to Kruskal-Wallis and Conover tests (alpha = 0.05). RESULTS: In regard to dentin

Equivalency study of histological responses to complete or partial pulpotomies in inflamed baboon immature first permanent molars.

UNLABELLED: Partial pulpotomy is an accepted treatment for traumatised incisor teeth with exposed pulps. Clinical studies in humans suggest that this may also be an acceptable technique for carious exposed pulps in molar teeth, but objective histological evidence to support this perception is lacking. OBJECTIVE: To compare histological responses to complete or partial pulpotomies of inflamed pulps in immature baboon first permanent molar teeth. METHODS: An experimental study in the baboon (Papio ursinus). Pulpitis was induced with fresh Streptococcus mutans placed into occlusal cavities with

Conventional endodontics and the operating microscope.

Patients are increasingly wishing to undergo conventional endodontic treatment rather than to risk the loss of a tooth. Endodontic treatment in teeth that have been previously restored with extensive intracoronal or extracoronal restorations are often difficult to treat. The orientation of the root canals to the crown of the tooth may be lost, and this may often be compounded by the deposition of reparative dentin in the pulp chamber. The operating microscope allows better visualization of the working field, ensuring that the anatomy of the tooth is more readily inspected. This greatly enhance

The effectiveness of using different pulp-capping agents on the healing response of the pulp.

BACKGROUND: Some of the disadvantages of calcium hydroxide Ca(OH) 2 as pulp-capping material are related to the inflammatory response, and its poor sealing ability. Cyanoacrylate glue was proposed in this study as pulp-capping agent because of its sealing ability, and diprogenta, on the other hand, was proposed because of its anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory effects. The aim of this study is to evaluate and compare the histopathological response of the pulp toward cyanoacrylate and diprogenta in direct pulp capping (DPC). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Cyanoacrylate, diprogenta, and calcium hydro

Analysis of pulpal reactions to restorative procedures, materials, pulp capping, and future therapies.

Every year, despite the effectiveness of preventive dentistry and dental health care, 290 million fillings are placed each year in the United States; two-thirds of these involve the replacement of failed restorations. Improvements in the success of restorative treatments may be possible if caries management strategies, selection of restorative materials, and their proper use to avoid post-operative complications were investigated from a biological perspective. Consequently, this review will examine pulp injury and healing reactions to different restorative variables. The application of tissue

Dental age assessment by the pulp/tooth area proportion in cone beam computed tomography: is medico-legal application for age estimation reliable?

INTRODUCTION: Forensic dentistry has, as one of its main goals, the identification of living and/or deceased individuals, based on the individual features of the teeth. One of the identification criteria to be established is the chronological age. Several authors, including Kvaal, have developed age estimation methods based on secondary dentine deposition. Nowadays, three-dimensional imaging tests, such as Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT), are used in age estimation. OBJECTIVE: The aims of this research project were to validate Kvaal's method and its variables in age estimation and to cre

Chronic fluoride toxicity: dental fluorosis.

Dental fluorosis occurs as a result of excess fluoride ingestion during tooth formation. Enamel fluorosis and primary dentin fluorosis can only occur when teeth are forming, and therefore fluoride exposure (as it relates to dental fluorosis) occurs during childhood. In the permanent dentition, this would begin with the lower incisors, which complete mineralization at approximately 2-3 years of age, and end after mineralization of the third molars. The white opaque appearance of fluorosed enamel is caused by a hypomineralized enamel subsurface. With more severe dental fluorosis, pitting and a l

Effect of white mineral trioxide aggregate compared with biomimetic carbonated apatite on dentine bridge formation and inflammatory response in a dental pulp model.

AIM: To evaluate the effects of apatite precipitation on the biocompatibility and hard tissue induction properties of white mineral trioxide aggregate (WMTA) in a dental pulp model. METHODOLOGY: Pulp exposures were created on the axial walls of 32 sound canine teeth of eight dogs. Four additional sound teeth served as controls. The pulps were capped either with WMTA or apatite derivatives [biomimetic carbonated apatite (BCAp)] in the interaction of WMTA with a synthetic tissue fluid and restored with zinc oxide-eugenol cement. After 7 and 70 days, the animals were killed, and the histological

Characterization of alpha-smooth muscle actin positive cells in mineralized human dental pulp cultures.

In response to injury, pulp precursor cells can differentiate into odontoblast-like cells that produce reparative dentine. In culture, pulp cells form mineralizing nodules, but the characteristics of the cells involved in this process are still not fully known. Human pulp cells for culture were obtained from coronal pulp isolated from non-erupted molars, and were maintained in RPMI 1640 medium supplemented with fetal calf serum. Nodules were forming in all human pulp primary cultures (HPPc) and human pulp subcultures observed until their fifth passage (HPSc<5). Mineralization of the nodules wa

Four-Year Outcomes of Anterior Pressed Lithium Disilicate Veneers Fabricated from 3D-Printed Burn-Out Patterns: A Clinical Case Report.

Background/Objectives: Lithium disilicate (LD) veneers are widely used for minimally invasive anterior rehabilitation because of their favorable optical and mechanical properties. Fully digital workflows have been proposed as alternatives to conventional milling. These approaches combine computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM) with 3D-printed burn-out patterns and subsequent heat pressing of LD ingots. However, clinical documentation of multi-unit anterior cases fabricated exclusively through this additive-plus-pressing route remains scarce. This case report aims to describe a fully

Comparative Long-Term Clinical Performance of Atraumatic Restorative Treatment Versus Conventional Composite Restorations in Carious Primary Molars: A Prospective Observational Cohort Study.

INTRODUCTION: Dental caries are highly prevalent in children, and restoring carious primary molars presents challenges due to limited cooperation and resource constraints in this age group. Atraumatic restorative treatment (ART) may offer a minimally invasive alternative to conventional restorative techniques; however, long-term comparative evidence in primary dentition remains limited. This study aimed to evaluate and compare the success rates and clinical performance of ART using high-viscosity glass ionomer cement with conventional composite restorations in carious primary molars over 24 mo
