OBJECTIVES: Temporary or permanent vocal paralysis can occur after head and neck surgery for thyroid cancer, esophageal resection, a chest operation that includes lung parenchymal resection due to a vagus or recurrent laryngeal nerve injury, and so forth. These days, the main treatment for vocal fold paralysis is the injection laryngoplasty through the cricothyroid (CT) approach. However, the CT approach is difficult in that an operator cannot see from the tip of the needle to the vocal fold. The aim of this study was to determine the efficacy of the thyrohyoid (TH) approach compared with the

To evaluate the effectiveness of hyperfractionation for T2 glottic cancer from a viewpoint of laryngeal preservation, we analyzed 21 patients (twice-a-day group) who were treated with hyperfractionation between 1992 and 1998 and compared the results with those of 27 patients (once-a-day group) treated with conventional once-a-day radiation between 1987 and 1992. In the twice-a-day group, radiation was performed with two fractions of 1.2 Gy/day up to a total dose of 72-74.4 Gy. In the once-a-day group, radiation was performed with a fraction of 2 Gy/day up to a total dose of 66 Gy. If radiation

INTRODUCTION: For the evaluation of voice disorders, direct observation of vocal cord vibration is important. Among the various methods, laryngeal videostroboscopy (LVS) is widely used, but it was not a true image because it collects images from different cycles. In contrast, high-speed videoendoscopy and videokymography have much higher frame rates and can assess functional and mobility disorders.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the study is to describe real-time, simultaneous digital kymography (DKG), two-dimensional scanning (2D) DKG, and multi-frame (MF) LVS system using a high-speed digital ca

A paucity of data exists concerning the presentation, natural course and outcome of extramedullary plasmcytoma (EMP). It is difficult to determine the optimal treatment strategy and prognostic factors for EMP. We present an additional case of laryngeal EMP and systemic review relevant reports in the English and Chinese literature. We found, to our knowledge, 147 cases in larynx in the English-language literature and Chinese-literature. The most common treatment modality was radiotherapy alone. The mean survival duration was ~184 months, and the 5- and 10- year survival rates were 76.1% and 67.
