Konzo: a distinct neurological disease associated with food (cassava) cyanogenic poisoning.

Epidemics of neurodegenerative diseases putatively caused by food toxins have been reported in the tropics with no clear understanding of their pathogenetic mechanisms. These diseases include the disease named Konzo that has been well documented in sub-Sahara Africa, mostly among children and women of childbearing age. Outbreaks of Konzo have occurred in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Mozambique, Tanzania, Central African Republic, Angola, Cameroun, and most recently in Zambia. The main clinical picture consists of a symmetrical, permanent and irreversible spastic paraparesis (motor neuron

Whole blood NAD and NADP concentrations are not depressed in subjects with clinical pellagra.

Population surveys for niacin deficiency are normally based on clinical signs or on biochemical measurements of urinary niacin metabolites. Status may also be determined by measurement of whole blood NAD and NADP concentrations. To compare these methods, whole blood samples and spot urine samples were collected from healthy subjects (n = 2) consuming a western diet, from patients (n = 34) diagnosed with pellagra and attending a pellagra clinic in Kuito (central Angola, where niacin deficiency is endemic), and from female community control subjects (n = 107) who had no clinical signs of pellagr

Ticks and tick-borne pathogens of domestic ruminants in southern Africa: A systematic review of diversity, distribution, and epidemiology.

The resurgence of tick-borne diseases remains a global concern, hindering livestock production across southern Africa and resulting in significant economic losses and threatening the livelihoods of small-scale farmers through reduced yields, higher treatment costs, and increased livestock mortality. This review synthesizes evidence on the genetic characterization, distribution, and epidemiology of ticks and tick-borne pathogens affecting domestic ruminants (cattle, goats, and sheep) in southern Africa. A search for peer-reviewed articles published between 2016 and 2025 was conducted across thr

Gene Polymorphisms of TLR2 Subfamily and Bacterial Meningitis in Angolan Children.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Bacterial meningitis is a severe disease with a fatality rate of 5-50%. It is mainly caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae or Neisseria meningitidis, which can also cause simultaneous infections outside the central nervous system. Toll-like receptors (TLRs) have an important role in the innate immune system. The TLR2 subfamily comprises the four highly homologous members TLR1, TLR2, TLR6, and TLR10, which also have an important immunomodulatory role in infectious diseases. METHODS: The study cohort consists of 190 bacterial meningitis patients aged 1 to 147 months from ran

Differences in Genetic Diversity between Early Isolates of Yellow Fever Virus Genotypes.

Yellow fever virus (YFV) is the prototypical member of the genus Orthoflavivirus and is responsible for the disease yellow fever. Phylogenetic studies show YFV can be characterized into seven genotypes (East Africa [EA], East and Central Africa [ECA], West Africa I [WAI], West Africa II [WAII], South America I [SAI], South America II [SAII], and Angola [ANG]). We used Next Generation Sequencing to investigate and compare genetic diversity of the seven genotypes of YFV using early isolated strains of known passage history from a variety of collection years. Genetic diversity varied between the

Estimating the economic impact of COVID-19 disruption on access to sexual and reproductive health and rights in Eastern and Southern Africa.

BACKGROUND: The Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) resulted in the disruption of Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights (SRHR) services in the Eastern and Southern Africa region. To date, studies estimating the impact of COVID-19 disruptions have mainly focused on SRHR services without estimating the economic implication. METHOD: We used national service coverage data on the effectiveness of interventions from the lives saved tool (LiST), a mathematical modeling tool that estimates the effects of service coverage change in mortality. We computed years lost due to COVID-19 disruption on SRHR u

The preventable burden of mortality from unsafe abortion among female sex workers: a Community Knowledge Approach survey among peer networks in eight countries.

Previous studies have found high levels of unintended pregnancy among female sex workers (FSW), but less attention has been paid to their abortion practices and outcomes. This study is the first to investigate abortion-related mortality among FSW across eight countries: Angola, Brazil, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), India, Indonesia, Kenya, Nigeria, and South Africa. The Community Knowledge Approach (CKA) was used to survey a convenience sample of FSW (n = 1280). Participants reported on the deaths of peer FSW in their social networks during group meetings convened by non-governmental org

Varied trends of tuberculosis and HIV dual epidemics among different countries during 2000-2020: lessons from an ecological time-trend study of 9 countries.

BACKGROUND: While Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection is a well-established risk factor for tuberculosis (TB), the effect of HIV infection on TB incidence varies across countries given differences in local epidemiological factors and disparate progress with respect to TB elimination goals. METHODS: In this descriptive epidemiological study, we explored the country-specific associations between HIV prevalence and TB incidence in nine countries representing four WHO regions using data between 2000 and 2020. For each of these countries, we (1) described the trends of TB incidence and HI

[Surgical urinary diversion in children from war and crisis areas-20-year experience report].

BACKGROUND: Because sick and injured children from war and crisis areas can often only be helped to a limited extent in their countries of origin, those children with the most complex diseases often receive medical treatment in Europe. MATERIALS AND METHODS: To evaluate the postoperative outcome of reconstructive interventions in children from war and crisis areas, an evaluation of the clinic's internal database between 1997 and 2017 was carried out. The operative indication, the surgical procedure, any revisions or conversions and the overall mortality were analyzed. RESULTS: During the abo

Validation of a Low-Cost Paper-Based Screening Test for Sickle Cell Anemia.

BACKGROUND: The high childhood mortality and life-long complications associated with sickle cell anemia (SCA) in developing countries could be significantly reduced with effective prophylaxis and education if SCA is diagnosed early in life. However, conventional laboratory methods used for diagnosing SCA remain prohibitively expensive and impractical in this setting. This study describes the clinical validation of a low-cost paper-based test for SCA that can accurately identify sickle trait carriers (HbAS) and individuals with SCA (HbSS) among adults and children over 1 year of age. METHODS A

Distribution of Marburg virus in Africa: An evolutionary approach.

The aim of this study was to investigate the origin and geographical dispersion of Marburg virus, the first member of the Filoviridae family to be discovered. Seventy-three complete genome sequences of Marburg virus isolated from animals and humans were retrieved from public databases and analysed using a Bayesian phylogeographical framework. The phylogenetic tree of the Marburg virus data set showed two significant evolutionary lineages: Ravn virus (RAVV) and Marburg virus (MARV). MARV divided into two main clades; clade A included isolates from Uganda (five from the European epidemic in 1967

Progress toward interruption of wild poliovirus transmission--worldwide, January 2011-March 2012.

In January 2012, completion of polio eradication was declared a programmatic emergency for global public health by the Executive Board of the World Health Organization (WHO). Despite major progress since the launch of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) in 1988, circulation of indigenous wild poliovirus (WPV) continues in three countries (Afghanistan, Nigeria, and Pakistan). India has not reported a polio case since January 2011, and is considered polio-free since February 2012. This report highlights progress toward global polio eradication during January 2011-March 2012. The numbe
