Identification and management of Lynch syndrome in the Middle East and North African countries: outcome of a survey in 12 countries.

BACKGROUND: Lynch syndrome (LS), the most common inherited form of colorectal cancer (CRC), is responsible for 3% of all cases of CRC. LS is caused by a mismatch repair gene defect and is characterized by a high risk for CRC, endometrial cancer and several other cancers. Identification of LS is of utmost importance because colonoscopic surveillance substantially improves a patient's prognosis. Recently, a network of physicians in Middle Eastern and North African (ME/NA) countries was established to improve the identification and management of LS families. The aim of the present survey was to e

[History of opium poppy and morphine].

Opium has been known for millennia to relieve pain and its use for surgical analgesia has been recorded for several centuries. The Sumerian clay tablet (about 2100 BC) is considered to be the world's oldest recorded list of medical prescriptions. It is believed by some scholars that the opium poppy is referred to on the tablet. Some objects from the ancient Greek Minoan culture may also suggest the knowledge of the poppy. A goddess from about 1500 BC shows her hair adorned probably with poppy-capsules and her closed eyes disclose sedation. Also juglets probably imitating the poppy-capsules wer

Plasma nesfatin-1 and DDP-4 levels in patients with coronary artery disease: Kozani study.

BACKGROUND: Nesfatin-1, a novel adipokine and dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP4), a mam malian serine protease, are potent factors of atherosclerosis. In the present cross-sectional study, we investigated whether the plasma nesfatin-1 and DPP4 is associated with the prevalence and severity of coronary artery disease (CAD) with and without diabetes mellitus (DM). METHODS: We consecutively enrolled a total of 240 patients with significant CAD (previous revascularization or angiographically-proven coronary artery stenosis > 50%) presented with either unstable angina (UA, N = 76) or stable chronic CAD

A novel c.5308_5311delGAGA mutation in Senataxin in a Cypriot family with an autosomal recessive cerebellar ataxia.

BACKGROUND: Senataxin (chromosome 9q34) was recently identified as the causative gene for an autosomal recessive form of Ataxia (ARCA), termed as Ataxia with Oculomotor Apraxia, type 2 (AOA2) and characterized by generalized incoordination, cerebellar atrophy, peripheral neuropathy, "oculomotor apraxia" and increased alpha-fetoprotein (AFP). Here, we report a novel Senataxin mutation in a Cypriot ARCA family. METHODS: We studied several Cypriot autosomal recessive cerebellar ataxia (ARCA) families for linkage to known ARCA gene loci. We linked one family (909) to the SETX locus on chromosome

5alpha-reductase 2 gene mutations in three unrelated patients of Greek Cypriot origin: identification of an ancestral founder effect.

INTRODUCTION: 5alpha-Steroid reductase deficiency (5alphaSRD) is an autosomal recessive enzymatic deficiency. Mutations in the 5alpha-steroid reductase type 2 gene (SRD5A2) result in male pseudohermaphroditism caused by decreased dihydrotestosterone (DHT) synthesis--a key hormone of virilization of male external genitalia. AIM: To study for the first time patients from the Greek Cypriot population, describe their clinical characteristics, and identify the genetic mutations of the SRD5A2 gene. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Three unrelated patients with 46,XY karyotype born with ambiguous genitalia we

Identification of a mutation in complement factor H-related protein 5 in patients of Cypriot origin with glomerulonephritis.

BACKGROUND: Complement is a key component of the innate immune system, and variation in genes that regulate its activation is associated with renal and other disease. We aimed to establish the genetic basis for a familial disorder of complement regulation associated with persistent microscopic haematuria, recurrent macroscopic haematuria, glomerulonephritis, and progressive renal failure. METHODS: We sought patients from the West London Renal and Transplant Centre (London, UK) with unusual renal disease and affected family members as a method of identification of new genetic causes of kidney

Medullary cystic kidney disease with hyperuricemia and gout in a large Cypriot family: no allelism with nephronophthisis type 1.

We describe a large Cypriot family with an interstitial type of nephropathy, inherited as an autosomal dominant trait that led to end stage renal failure between 51 to 78 years of age (mean 62.2 years). Twenty-three people are known to be affected, but several younger relatives with normal renal function may remain undiagnosed because of the absence of precise clinical and laboratory diagnostic criteria. This nephropathy is associated with medullary renal cysts, hypertension, hyperuricemia, and gout. Several relatives have typical medullary cystic disease (MCD), while in the others the finding

Health effects of tremolite. Now and in the future.

Although tremolite asbestos has been well characterized since 1916, appreciation of its role in disease induction is relatively recent. It has always been understood that the morphology of tremolite is complex, and part of the slowness in recognizing it as a hazard has been definitional in nature. Reduced to simple terms the questions are, when is tremolite "asbestos-like," when is it an innocuous amorphous particle, do these forms occur together, with what confidence can they be separated for regulatory purposes, and what is the spectrum of disease potential for varying exposure? A brake on r

Low-level deficits in beat perception: neither necessary nor sufficient for explaining developmental dyslexia in a consistent orthography.

This article reports two different studies examining the theoretical account of low-level deficits in beat perception as an alternative explanation of developmental dyslexia in Greek, an orthographically consistent language. Study I examined the relationship of amplitude rise time and frequency discrimination with measures of phonological processing, working memory, and reading fluency in a large unselected sample of Grade 4 children. Study II examined the presence of beat perception deficits in groups of Grade 2, 4, and 6 children with dyslexia and their chronological age controls. The result

Investigating the double-deficit hypothesis in Greek: findings from a longitudinal study.

This study examined longitudinally the double-deficit hypothesis in Greek, an orthographically consistent language, following a group of children from kindergarten to Grade 2. Four groups were formed on the basis of two composite scores of phonological and naming-speed criterion measures: a double-deficit group (DD; n = 17), a phonological deficit group (PD; n = 33), a naming deficit group (ND; n = 33), and a control group exhibiting no deficits (CnD; n = 159). The four groups were identified in Grade 1, and they were compared retrospectively in kindergarten only on the criterion measures, and

Low Incidence and Mortality from SARS-CoV-2 in Southern Europe. Proposal of a hypothesis for Arthropod borne Herd immunity.

SARS-CoV-2 incidence and mortality in Europe have shown wide variation. Northern Italy in particular the Lombardy region, north-eastern French regions, Switzerland and Belgium were amongst the hardest hit, while the central and southern Italian regions, all the Balkan countries from Slovenia to Greece and the Islands of Malta and Cyprus had much fewer cases and deaths per capita, and deaths per number of cases. Differences in public health measures, and health care delivery, in the author's opinion, can only partly explain the difference. The geographical distribution of Phlebotomus sand-flies

Accuracy of Curable Sexually Transmitted Infections and Genital Mycoplasmas Screening by Multiplex Real-Time PCR Using a Self-Collected Veil among Adult Women in Sub-Saharan Africa.

BACKGROUND: Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are highly prevalent in sub-Saharan Africa. Genital self-sampling may facilitate the screening of STIs in hard-to-reach remote populations far from large health care centers and may increase screening rates. The cross-sectional GYNAUTO-STI study was carried out to assess the performance of a novel genital veil (V-Veil-Up Gyn Collection Device, V-Veil-Up Pharma, Ltd., Nicosia, Cyprus) as a genital self-sampling device to collect genital secretions to diagnose STIs by molecular biology as compared to reference clinician-collected genital specime

Genetic diversity of Apis mellifera filamentous virus in bees sampled in the USA and Jamaica.

Apis mellifera filamentous virus (AmFV) is a large filamentous virus with a ~500 kb double-stranded DNA genome identified in honeybees and a handful of other winged insects. Since its first identification almost 50 years ago, only a few nearly complete AmFV genomes have been sequenced. Genomic regions of AmFV have been identified using gene-specific primers as part of the viral screening surveys for honeybee viruses. Here, we assembled a complete AmFV genome from honeybees from the USA which shares 94.4-96.4% intergenomic similarity with previously published AmFV genomes. A distinct variation

Global trends and epidemiological shifts in gastrointestinal cancers: insights from the past four decades.

BACKGROUND: The epidemiological profiles of gastrointestinal (GI) cancers vary across countries and over time, largely reflecting variations in risk factors and screening practices. We aimed to provide an overview of the current global burden of the five major types of GI cancers and conduct an updated evaluation of the long-term trends of GI cancers. METHODS: The updated numbers of new cases and deaths, and age-standardized rates (ASR), of the five GI cancers for 185 countries were sourced from the GLOBOCAN 2022, and presented by cancer site, continent, and human development index (HDI).
