PURPOSE: Narrow-diameter implants have become popular, as bone augmentation procedures can frequently be avoided. In order to provide implants with sufficient strength, a titanium-zirconium (Ti-Zr) alloy has recently been introduced purportedly showing improved mechanical properties as compared to commercially pure titanium (cpTi). This paper reports on the clinical and fractographic aspects of a fractured Ti-Zr implant, generally considered a rare event.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A narrow-diameter Ti-Zr implant was placed in a patient aged 66 years in the area of the maxillary right canine and

UNLABELLED: Gingival recession is apical migration of the gingival tissues resulting in exposure of the underlying root surface. This can cause significant esthetic concerns for the patient, especially when it affects the anterior teeth. The gingival veneer is a prosthesis indicated for challenging clinical situations where there are esthetic concerns because of gingival recession, particularly loss of interdental papillae. Replacement crowns, surgery, or extraction of teeth, and provision of a removable partial denture are other treatment options; however, these have a significant biologic an

BACKGROUND: Extranodal nasal-type natural killer (NK)/T-cell lymphoma represents a rare entity, typically originating in the nasal cavity, palate or midfacial region. Signs and symptoms include non-specific rhinitis and/or sinusitis, nasal obstruction, epistaxis, facial swelling and development of deep necrotic ulceration in the midline of the palate, causing an oronasal defect. Differential diagnosis includes fungal infections, Wegener's granulomatosis, tertiary syphilis, other non-Hodgkin's lymphomas and malignant epithelial midline tumors.
CASE REPORT: We present a case of a 40-year-old ma

BACKGROUND: Migration of dental implants into the maxillary sinus is an uncommon, but increasingly reported complication. Implant migration may result from initial lack of primary stability, intrasinusal and nasal pressure changes, autoimmune reaction to the implant or incorrect distribution of occlusal forces. This retrospective study aims at analyzing the factors that may influence implant migration into the maxillary sinus cavity.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Fourteen patients presenting a total 15 implants that migrated into the maxillary sinus were recruited. Diagnosis of this complication was

PURPOSE: The aim of this retrospective study was to present the results of implants and natural teeth used as combined abutments to support maxillary telescopic prostheses.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between 1997 and 2004, 22 patients with residual maxillary teeth underwent prosthodontic rehabilitation with supplementary implant placement of implant-tooth-supported telescopic prostheses. A total of 60 supplementary implants (mean: 2.9 implants; SD: 1.6; range: 1 to 5 per patient) were placed in strategic position and connected with 48 natural abutment teeth (mean: 2.2 teeth; SD: 0.9; range: 1 to

INTRODUCTION: Oral and denture hygiene are often defective in particular with dependent persons such as geriatric subjects. The reasons are the lack of hygiene education of the subjects or those caring for them. Consequently, oral hygiene is often neglected, resulting in poor oral health and an increase in the presence of local or general infections.
OBJECTIVE: This paper is a report of brushing effectiveness on microbial biofilm deposits on dentures of subjects participating in a specific oral hygiene programme.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-nine dentures of 30 subjects were assessed for 2

BACKGROUND: Atrophic anterior maxilla rehabilitation can be a challenging procedure due to multiple factors that influence clinical decision making. After a prolonged loss of teeth, the residual bone often impedes the use of standard implant placement protocols and additional procedures are needed.
AIM: The aim of this study is to describe the multidisciplinary approach for the diagnosis and treatment of a 50-year-old woman with prolonged use of a removable maxillary partial denture.
CASE DESCRIPTION: This article presents a full-mouth-phased rehabilitation of an atrophic anterior maxilla wi

Oral rehabilitation of missing teeth in cleft patients has acceptable success rates. A two-stage approach is indicated; however, timing of implant placement in the grafted maxilla varies within existing protocols. This case highlights successful implant osseointegration and esthetic oral rehabilitation following placement of two implants at 5 months after maxillary grafting (alveolar bone grafting) with a corticocancellous block obtained from the iliac crest. A 31-year-old male patient had already undergone repair of his bilateral cleft lip and soft palate according to established guidelines f

OBJECTIVE: To introduce individualized 3-dimensional (3-D) reconstruction of maxillary defect by prefabricated titanium mesh combined with pedicled buccal fat pad flap (PBFPF) and bone autograft.
METHODS: Since May, 2001, 16 patients with maxillary defect resulted from tumor or trauma were treated. The 3-D models were created through 3-D CT and rapid prototype technique. The maxilla on the unaffected side was copied to the affected side by CAD/CAM. Then the titanium mesh was prefabricated accurately on the 3-D model. The PBFPF served as lining of the titanium mesh and the autogenous bone graf

Cleidocranial dysplasia (CCD) is an uncommon, generalized skeletal disorder characterized by delayed ossification of the skull, aplastic or hypoplastic clavicles, and serious, complex dental abnormalities. There are many difficulties in the early diagnosis of CCD because a majority of the craniofacial abnormalities becomes obvious only during adolescence. In the present case, a hypoplastic midface, a relative prognathia of the mandible, and close approximation of the shoulders in the anterior plane were the conspicuous extraoral findings. Prolonged exfoliation of the primary dentition, unerupt

BACKGROUND: Effective cleaning protocols are crucial for controlling biofilm formation on oral prostheses and preserving the oral health of patients relying on removable partial dentures (RPDs).
OBJECTIVES: The present study aimed to investigate the antibiofilm efficacy of 4 cleansing protocols on a cobalt-chromium (Co-Cr) alloy surface, which is commonly used as the base-metal framework material in dental prosthodontics.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Cobalt-chromium specimens were contaminated with isolated strains of Candida albicans, Candida glabrata, Staphylococcus aureus, and Streptococcus muta

The purpose of our study was a comparative analysis of the effect of dentures from various materials on the immunological and redox-dependent homeostasis of the oral cavity. We studied 60 patients with removable dentures made based on plastics Prothyl Hot, Vertex BasiQ 20 (differing by polymerization regime) and elastic thermoplastic polymer Perflex Flexi Nylon. The control group consisted of 15 volunteers with a practically healthy oral cavity, who did not use dentures. Saliva collected on an empty stomach in a glass tube without the use of a stimulator before the establishment of a denture a

A 37-year-old man reported to our department with the history of gunshot injury to the mandible 15 years before. His anterior mandible had been resected earlier and bone graft was seen. Intraoral examination of lower jaw revealed 4 remaining mandibular molars. These teeth were severely rotated such that they lay horizontal with respect to the mandibular base. Preoperative Dentascan spiral computerized tomography (CT) of the patient revealed obliteration of the mesial canals of the mandibular right first molar and pear-shaped internal resorption defect in the distal canal of the same tooth. Dentin dysplasia type I is a rare hereditary disturbance of dentin formation characterized clinically by nearly normal appearing crowns and severe hypermobility of teeth. Radiographic analysis shows obliteration of all pulp chambers, short, blunted, and malformed roots, and periapical radiolucencies of noncarious teeth. This paper presents 2 cases demonstrating both classic and atypical features of type I dentin dysplasia in the mixed and permanent dentitions. The clinical, radiographic, and histopathologic\findings of this condition and treatment are described.

The aim of this study was to isolate, quantify, identify, and compare opportunistic microorganisms (Candida and Staphylococcus genera and Enterobacteriaceae/Pseudomonadaceae families) from prosthesis-fitting surfaces, the hard palate, and mouth rinses of individuals wearing removable maxillary prosthesis with (50) and without (50) lesions of denture stomatitis (DS). The strains were collected and identified using phenotypic, biochemical and molecular tests. The counts of microorganisms were significantly higher in the group of individuals with DS (P < 0.05). C. albicans was the most frequently

BACKGROUND: Tooth loss affects not only oral function but also sociopsychological well-being. Although quantitative studies have assessed these effects, patients' subjective experiences remain underexplored. This study qualitatively described the daily denture adaptation process, identifying difficulties, coping strategies, and the dentists' role in providing foundational knowledge for patient support.
METHODS: Using reflexive thematic analysis, 11 participants (aged 18+) with current or past denture experience were recruited from a domiciliary dental clinic. Data were collected through semi-
