Does fear expectancy prime fear? An autonomic study in spider phobics.

This study investigated whether fear expectancy in phobic individuals induces priming of the defensive system, thus generating a "blind" phobic response even to non-phobic stimuli. We employed a paradigm in which two different visual cues signalled the upcoming picture presentation of either a spider or an innocuous animal (congruent condition). Unknown to the participants, the visual cue was incorrectly followed by a picture from the opposite category on two additional trials (incongruent condition). Cardiac and skin conductance responses were recorded from young adults with (n=15) or without

Imaging natural cognition in action.

The primary function of the human brain is arguably to optimize the results of our motor actions in an ever-changing environment. Our cognitive processes and supporting brain dynamics are inherently coupled both to our environment and to our physical structure and actions. To investigate human cognition in its most natural forms demands imaging of brain activity while participants perform naturally motivated actions and interactions within a full three-dimensional environment. Transient, distributed brain activity patterns supporting spontaneous motor actions, performed in pursuit of naturally

Effects of continuous positive airway pressure on cognitition and neuroimaging data in sleep apnea.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) has been associated with a broad range of neurocognitive difficulties. The current view is that the neurocognitive impairment in OSA is due to the adverse effects of sleep fragmentation and/or intermittent hypoxia. The overall picture of cognitive deficits in OSA is complex. On balance, there appears to be negative effects of OSA on cognition, most likely in the domains of attention/vigilance, verbal and visual delayed long-term memory, visuospatial/constructional abilities, and executive dysfunction. Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is the most effectiv

Blunted salivary and plasma cortisol response in patients with panic disorder under psychosocial stress.

BACKGROUND: Panic disorder (PD) has been associated with an altered activity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal-cortical (HPA) axis. Recent findings from a patient sample with PD with secondary depression on psychotropic medication using salivary cortisol as outcome measure suggest a non-responsiveness of the HPA-axis under acute psychosocial stress. Salivary cortisol does not necessarily reflect the total plasma cortisol due to interfering variables. Whether the present findings can be replicated on a patient sample with pure PD using both salivary cortisol and total plasma cortisol as out

Sleep deprivation and neurobehavioral functioning in children.

Sleep deprivation can result in significant impairments in daytime neurobehavioral functioning in children. Neural substrates impacted by sleep deprivation include the prefrontal cortex, basal ganglia and amygdala and result in difficulties with executive functioning, reward anticipation and emotional reactivity respectively. In everyday life, such difficulties contribute to academic struggles, challenging behaviors and public health concerns of substance abuse and suicidality. In this article, we aim to review 1) core neural structures impacted by sleep deprivation; 2) neurobehavioral problem

Emotional expressions modulate low α and β oscillations in a cortically blind patient.

Studies of cortical blindness have suggested that some residual visual function may persist without perceptual awareness, a condition known as blindsight. To investigate electrophysiological evidence of unconscious processing of emotional stimuli, we examined the event-related oscillations (EROs) in a 62year-old male patient (TN) with affective blindsight during random stimulation of three facial expressions (fearful, happy and neutral). Spectral power analysis in response to the different emotions revealed significant differences between fearful and happy faces over the right frontal regions

Long-term neuroplasticity in spinal cord injury patients: a study on movement-related brain potentials.

Neuroplastic changes that take place in the brain after sustaining a spinal cord injury have generally been studied encompassing various post-injury time periods, sometimes ranging from just a few days to many years. Although research on the low-end of this time spectrum has established that neuroplastic changes can be detected shortly after trauma, electroencephalographic changes that take place in long-term injuries are still poorly defined. To investigate this, the present study recorded the movement-related brain potentials from 9 long suffering spinal cord injury patients (post-injury ran

Brain correlates of cognitive inhibition in fibromyalgia: emotional intrusion of symptom-related words.

Evidence coming from neuropsychological studies has showed the presence of cognitive alterations in fibromyalgia. Such dysfunctions are especially remarkable when the set in motion of executive control processes, such as inhibition, is required to perform successfully; however, neural data related to these mechanisms are very scarce. Present study tried to characterize cognitive inhibition mechanisms, as part of the attentional control functions, in patients with fibromyalgia. Participants (two groups: fibromyalgia patients and healthy control participants) were asked to perform in an emotiona

Working memory of somatosensory stimuli: an fMRI study.

In a previous study, we have shown that passive recognition of tactile geometrical shapes (i.e. no exploratory movement) engages prefrontal and premotor areas in addition to somatosensory regions (Savini et al., 2010). In the present study we tested the hypothesis that these regions are involved not only in the perception but also during working memory of such somatic information. We performed functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) during the execution of N-BACK tasks, with 2D geometrical shapes blindly pressed on the subjects' right hand palm. Three conditions with increasing memory loa

Brain potentials in outcome evaluation: when social comparison takes effect.

Social comparison, in which people evaluate their opinions and abilities by comparing them with the opinions and abilities of others, is a central feature of human social life. Previous work has highlighted the importance of social comparison in reward processing. However, the time-course of the social comparison effect in outcome evaluation remains largely unknown. The purpose of this study was to explore to what extent brain activity is modulated by social comparison between an individual and their anonymous partner. Event-related potentials (ERPs) were measured while the participants viewed

The relationships among heart rate variability, executive functions, and clinical variables in patients with panic disorder.

Heart rate variability (HRV) is reduced in patients who suffer from panic disorder (PD). Reduced HRV is related to hypoactivity in the prefrontal cortex (PFC), which negatively affects executive functioning. The present study assessed the relationships between vagally mediated HRV at baseline and measures of executive functioning in 36 patients with PD. Associations between these physiological and cognitive measures and panic-related variables were also investigated. HRV was measured using HF-power (ms(2)), and executive functions were assessed with the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST) and t

Heart rate variability moderates the association between attachment avoidance and self-concept reorganization following marital separation.

Despite substantial evidence indicating that relationships shape people's self-concept, relatively little is known about how people reorganize their sense of self when relationships end and whether this varies as a function of people's beliefs about relationships. In this report, we examine the prospective association between self-report adult attachment style and self-concept recovery among 89 adults following a recent marital separation. People high in attachment avoidance are characterized by the tendency to deactivate (i.e., suppress) painful attachment-related thoughts and feelings, and,

Brain activity while reading words and pseudo-words: a comparison between dyslexic and fluent readers.

In recent years many studies have focused on brain activity differences between fluent and dyslexic readers in order to understand the neural basis of dyslexia. The aim of the current study was to examine the processing of words and pseudo-words in the two hemispheres among dyslexic as compared to fluent readers, using behavioral, and electrophysiological source estimation measures. Two matched groups of university students, fluent and dyslexic readers, performed a lexical decision task in order to examine the processes of word recognition. Dyslexic readers showed overall less activity than fl

Cardiovascular responses to mental activation of social support schemas.

While perceived social support appears to be associated with buffered cardiovascular reactivity to short-term stressors, its impact on cardiovascular recovery is less clear. This relationship might be affected by trait hostility, with hostile individuals benefiting less from social support. However, despite the possibility that support provision might enhance well-being, limited empirical work has manipulated this in a laboratory context. The present study sought to investigate whether mentally activated support provision and support receipt influenced cardiovascular recovery from cognitive st

Hostile behavior links negative childhood family relationships to heart rate reactivity and recovery in young adulthood.

Prior research has demonstrated that vulnerability to stress is influenced by early life experiences. This study evaluates the impact of negative childhood family relationships on cardiovascular stress reactivity in young adulthood. Participants (age 18-22) from families characterized by negative (n=39) or positive relationships (n=36) engaged in a role-play conflict task. Hostile/aggressive verbal behaviors during the task were observed, and blood pressure (BP) and heart rate (HR) responses were measured before, during, and after the task. Participants from negative families engaged in more h

Sex moderates the relationship between worry and performance monitoring brain activity in undergraduates.

Research suggests that abnormal performance-monitoring contributes to the etiology and maintenance of anxious pathology. Moreover, the anxiety-performance monitoring relationship appears to be specific to the worry dimension of anxiety. Given that anxiety (and worry in particular) is twice as prevalent in women as men, and most studies to date have employed small samples which are underpowered to detect sex-differences, it is possible that sex may be an important moderator of the worry-performance-monitoring relationship. No studies have directly compared the worry-performance-monitoring relat

Heart rate and heart rate variability in panic, social anxiety, obsessive-compulsive, and generalized anxiety disorders at baseline and in response to relaxation and hyperventilation.

It remains unclear if diminished high frequency heart rate variability (HF-HRV) can be found across anxiety disorders. HF-HRV and heart rate (HR) were examined in panic (PD), generalized anxiety (GAD), social anxiety (SAD), and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) relative to healthy controls at baseline and during anxiety stressors. All disorders evidenced diminished baseline HF-HRV relative to controls. Baseline HRV differences were maintained throughout relaxation. For hyperventilation, PD and GAD demonstrated greater HR than controls. Psychotropic medication did not account for HF-HRV diffe

Self-ratings of higher olfactory acuity contrast with reduced olfactory test results of fibromyalgia patients.

BACKGROUND: Self-reports of fibromyalgia (FM) patients about an enhanced olfactory acuity have been used to characterize them as persons with a general increased sensitivity to sensory input consistent with a central sensitization. However, as reduced activations in some brain areas also seem to accompany FM, a multisensory hypersensitivity is not a necessary consequence. METHODS: FM patients meeting ARA (American Rheumatism Association) criteria (16 women and one man, aged 23-56 years, spontaneous pain 32-91 mm visual analog scale [VAS], 14-18 tender points with a pressure pain threshold of

Autonomic regulation, physical activity and perceived stress in subjects with musculoskeletal pain: 24-hour ambulatory monitoring.

The aim of the study was to investigate autonomic nervous system regulation, physical activity (PA) and perceived stress and energy during daily activities in subjects with chronic muscle pain in the neck-shoulders (trapezius myalgia) (n=23) and symptom-free controls (n=22). Subjects underwent 24-hour objective ambulatory monitoring of heart rate variability (HRV) and PA, and reported their perceived stress and energy in a diary. Standard HRV measures were extracted in time and frequency domains. The volume and pattern of different types of activities were quantified in terms of intensity and

Short-term cardiovascular responses to changing task demands.

When measuring operator states the predictive power of cardiovascular and respiratory measures in relation to mental workload has been questioned. One of the main questions is to what extent do cardiovascular measures actually reflect mental workload. This question arises because good measures of mental workload should be sensitive to changes in mental effort alone and not to other influences or at least the changes associated with mental workload should be easy to isolate. In the case of cardiovascular measures, the physiological change brought on by the baroreflex is a compensatory control e
