Microbiological analysis, antimicrobial activity, heavy-metals content and physico-chemical properties of Fijian mud pool samples.

The hot springs are home to a rich bacterial diversity which could be the source of enzymes, antibiotics and many other commercially important products. Most of the hot springs present in Fiji are unexplored and their analysis of microbial diversity could be of great interest in facilitating various industrial, agricultural and medicinal applications. This study is an attempt to evaluate the heavy metal concentration and to analyze the comprehensive bacterial diversity of two Fijian thermal mud pools, namely Sabeto and Tifajek. The two hot springs have a pH of 7.28 to 7.19 and a temperature of

Dysregulated gastric microbial communities and functional shifts in chronic atrophic versus non-atrophic gastritis: a Helicobacter pylori-Negative observational study.

BACKGROUND: Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection was identified as a substantial risk factor for gastric cancer development, but the eradication of H. pylori did not necessarily lead to a reduction in the incidence of gastric cancer. Non-Helicobacter pylori (non-H. pylori) bacteria in the stomach are involved in the transformation of gastritis carcinoma. The aim of this study was to characterize the microbiome composition of the gastric mucosa and its functions in non-H. pylori (H. pylori-negative) patients with chronic atrophic gastritis (CAG) and chronic non-atrophic gastritis (CNAG).

Infections in immunocompromised hosts and organ transplant recipients: essentials.

(1) Why do we need to know anything about these patients? Regardless of their specialties, physicians are increasingly confronted with the side effects of therapies that cause varying degrees of immunosuppression: chemotherapy and stem cell transplantation for cancer, solid organ transplantation, and therapies for autoimmune and rheumatological diseases. The management of these patients is increasingly being returned to community-based physicians. The infectious disease clinician is faced with major challenges. (2) The possible etiologies of infections are diverse; they range from common bacte

The clinical importance of microbiological findings in the diagnosis and management of bloodstream infections.

Bloodstream infections are associated with high morbidity and mortality. Accurate identification of blood isolates to the species level and identification of the source of infection and/or the portal of entry are crucial for optimal management of these infections. These investigations-in addition to clinical findings and laboratory and imaging studies-are central to informing and directing efficient and effective diagnostic examinations and to choosing the optimal antimicrobial regimen. Four case studies that demonstrate the importance of identifying the causative agents and the source of infe

Enlarged facial pores are associated with skin barrier impairment and microbiome dysbiosis in young Chinese women.

OBJECTIVE: Enlarged facial pores represent a prominent and widely concerning skin condition, as well as a challenging issue in skin care. The unique structure of pores provides a favourable habitat for microorganisms. Consequently, it is of great significance to explore the relationship between pore size, skin microbiota and their microenvironment. This study is the first to investigate the correlations between pore area, skin physiological and microbiota characteristics, providing a theoretical basis for the care of skin with enlarged pores. METHODS: Based on VISIA CR photographs, 199 women

Microbial communities associated with plastic fishing nets: diversity, potentially pathogenic and hydrocarbon degrading bacteria.

Abandoned, lost or otherwise discarded fishing gear (ALDFG) represent a major source of marine plastic litter pollution. Similar to other plastic litter, these items can provide a new surface for the growth of biofilms harboring distinct microbial communities, containing potential opportunistic pathogens or pollutant-degrading microorganisms. While knowledge is increasing for marine plastic litter and microplastic-associated biofilms, there is a gap on the plastisphere research for fishing gear. This study aimed to comprehend the structure and dynamics of the microbial communities attached to

Screening, molecular identification, population diversity, and antibiotic susceptibility pattern of Actinomycetes species isolated from meat and meat products of slaughterhouses, restaurants, and meat stores of a developing country, Iran.

INTRODUCTION: Actinomycetes can colonize surfaces of tools and equipment and can be transferred to meat and meat products during manufacture, processing, handling, and storage. Moreover, washing the meat does not eliminate the microorganisms; it only spreads them. As a result, these opportunistic pathogens can enter the human body and cause various infections. Therefore, the aim of the current study was to screen, identify, and determine the antibiotic susceptibility of Actinomycetes species from meat and meat products in the Markazi province of Iran. METHODS: A total of 60 meat and meat prod

Biological treatment of N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) and N-nitrodimethylamine (NTDMA) in a field-scale fluidized bed bioreactor.

The ex situ treatment of N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) and N-nitrodimethylamine (NTDMA) in groundwater was evaluated in a field-scale fluidized bed bioreactor (FBR). Both of these compounds, which originally entered groundwater at the test site from the use of liquid rocket propellant, are suspected human carcinogens. The objective of this research was to examine the application of a novel field-scale propane-fed fluidized bed bioreactor as an alternative to ultraviolet irradiation (UV) for treating NDMA and NTDMA to low part-per-trillion (ng/L) concentrations. Previous laboratory studies have

Interferon-alpha-associated development of bullous lesions in mycosis fungoides.

Chytridiomycosis is a fungal disease responsible for massive amphibian die-offs worldwide, caused by the fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd). Potential symbiotic relationships between frogs and the bacteria residing on their skin-referred to as skin-bacteria-may inhibit Bd growth, aiding in resistance to this lethal disease. This research had three main objectives: (1) to detect the presence of Bd in native populations of Atelopus balios, A. bomolochos, and A. nanay in the central Andes and coastal southern regions of Ecuador; (2) to identify the culturable skin-bacteria; and (3) to ana
